You can tell that the two vocalists have had many disagreements about direction in their music, since they both appear to be perfectionists (especially Jesse, since he writes most of the tracks). But it's really cool to see that they have learned to work with each other and trust in each other's creative processes, to get the best results. And personally, I think this album is easily one of Erra's defining works.
It's crazy to think about bands making transitions like that. Like how difficult it must have been for JT to step in and fill Garrison's role, and for them to so seamlessly change the sound but still sound like ERRA. I don't know how well (if at all) JT knew the guys in the band before he joined, but seeing how insanely far they have come since then is just so awesome.
Yeah dude. Especially since JT is such a talented vocalist. I would be bummed if he left the band. I’m really curious to see what direction they will go in in their next album.
Yep, JT is more into the heavy side and Jesse is all about the softer and atmospheric stuff. In their past songs Jesse did most of the singing now they have learned to work around their differences and combine their taste in music. Jesse didn't even sing once in Scorpion Hymn something the band hasn't done in over 6 years even before JT joined. (I know barely anything about their past screamer other than he left because of his health)
This album is gonna be AOTY two years in a row. The new tracks are just straight nasty. Love it. There are breakdowns all over the place and the choruses. Just amazing
Idk I think the death of me by Polaris and 4d by northlane are the most solid releases and will be til 2023. Veil of Maya might top all of them with their new album though. This is the best erra album since augment though.
I like how Jesse stepped up and realized that he battles with being micro-manage-y. Everyone has ideas that they want to share. It’s best to be humble and ask what everyone else thinks about an idea instead of assuming that your own idea is the best one.
A year already since you released this album and it still sounds so fresh. I dont think there has been a single day in the last 365 where i didnt listen to a track off that record.
Props to Jesse rq. Jesse has not only improved his songwriting every single album, he has improved his live singing. I watched this man completely slay all of their new material as well as some songs from drift, completely live. A few years ago you couldn’t say the same thing. This band continues to innovate and rise above the bar! Best band in modern metal/metalcore rn.
Always so cool to have some insight into greatness. Obsessed with the new tracks, might have the AOTY two years in a row lol ! (Also I think my crush on JT intensifies everytime I see him, he's so cool damn)
JT was definitely right about Drift. I think the self-titled is easily their best work yet as a band. It's comprehensive and amazing and there's really nothing you can objectively criticize about it. It's just missing the wholly unique vibe that Jesse was going for and finally accomplished in Drift though. It was pretty and ethereal despite being, y'know, metal. That was what Jesse took away from Misery Signals back in the day and wanted to expand upon, and that's what blew my mind when I listened to Drift for the first time back in 2016. Up until then I hadn't really seen anybody do that before and I wanted in so badly to the point that I started a whole new band with other kids Drift had afflicted in the same way. Only music project I can really say I was proud of to this day. Guys sold their Les Pauls for any 7 or 8 string they could find back in the day to copy Drift and Singularity by Northlane. I literally can't wait to see what these guys do next. Everything, the covers, Drift, Neon, the Self-Titled, I've loved it all. I think they've really hit their stride now and we're seeing some terrific things.
Unfortunately for me I had already fallen in love with impulse and augment. They're a totally different band now but amazingly still really innovative and great song writing. The rhythm guitar style and lyrics of augment are extremely intimate to me and I have a spiritual connection with that album. Self titled is the best album since augment but it doesn't top augment brother. Go back and REALLY listen to augment front to back and read the lyrics. That album was more consistent and I prefer the ringing note chord riffs rhythm guitar style way more then the tapping style. But this is all subjective I am happy erra had a major impact on you and inspired you to pick up a 7 string
I just can't believe you left augment out of that list. You are sleeping on that album in a major major way. Alan rigdon and garrison we're a very special part of their style that line up was way better than the current line up. Garrison had way more intricate and we'll spoken lyrics they were really deep and touched on a lot of Buddhism. Hr also had a way better vocal range than jt. And Alan rigdon had that unique style that was a perfect blend with Jessie. The new era of era which is written sorry by Jessie is amazing guitar work. Please go listen to the album augment like 7 times in a row
Youuuu crazy! Lol augment and impulse will never be beaten, but augment especially has zero flaws. But either way, it’s great to see that ten years later they’re still a band and still making phenomenal music!
@@preston2636 couldn’t agree more dude. I literally listened to that album for years and could still pick up new little details of the song I hadn’t noticed before. I think anyone that found ERRA when drift came out or later don’t like to give their old(better) stuff a chance.
Yall need to take a page of the of the Parkway Drive book and do more stuff like this and even a documentary like they did. Love when bands do behind the scenes in the studio and backstage for a whole tour. Really sheds a whole new light on the bands and makes you more invested in the members.
From Drift and Neon to the self tiled there is a noticeable difference in how "contrived" some of the sections of songs are. I love drift, it's a great album. Luminesce is still one of my favorite Erra tracks. But the self-titled album felt so free and every song was really a blank canvas for each of the band members to do their own thing. I can really appreciate Jesse acknowledging the truth that sometimes we can get in the way of our own goals by not getting out of the way of other people's creative abilities. Truly, the self-titled is one of my favorite metal albums of all time. Please keep going in this direction. You guys are crushing it right now🤘🤘
New songs are fuego. My only hope moving forward is that they find they abandon traditional pop song structures and start writing fully linear epic masterpieces. Jesse always adds nuances to ensure the songs aren't overly repetitive, but I think its still holding them back slightly. Still the best metalcore band currently in my opinion.
Agreed. It seems they add the drums last and pretty much tell him what to do. I wish they would record simultaneously in the studio and play together, I know it's easier to record and edit when they layer it but man cmon you can't tell me these guys don't have enough talent to accomplish that.
5:50 That's fair enough and do your thing, but if you get a bunch of pissed off fans, that's pretty fuckin understandable. The lyrics are pretty vitriolic, super insulting, and unapologetically so in the hatefulness towards Christians, in which that is miles away from a fair and good-faith criticism on religion or a thought-provoking commentary on it. You may think the song slaps, but that doesn't change that other people find it as a middle finger to who they are as people, and it's a pretty massive ask to request that they just look the other way on that and just focus on the cool synths you guys used. It's like covering One in a Million by GnR and telling people who are gay and black to just not mind the F-bombs and N-bombs. You can't really be that surprised if you find that they have a problem with that.
@@xeyon bruh you can tell they compress the fuck out of his screams. he's doing weak as fuck frys with no range. karl from mis sigs used the same technique which almost ruined that band for me, but his lyrics and delivery were so on point.
It looks like Jesse and JT’s couple counseling is going well.
😂😂😂 Conor being a stellar mediator for this session.

"That Impulse to just call it Erra"-Jesse
Master of guitar, master of puns
I do wonder if he was being intentional in saying that...

Gotta love the guitar and bass solos too. Tone was absolutely massive and I can't get enough.

@@mcmuffin7941 there are 3 covers and 3 new original songs. They are on the deluxe version of self titled album.
Love seeing the curtain being pulled back and hearing the honest conversation. Makes me even more excited for the future of the band
This album still feels like it came out last month. Cant believe its about to be a year old next week.
