dude the movie is different this is about a person going through a hallucination perfect blue is about a pop star degrading herself dumbass, there are hallucinations in perfect blue too but there are many contrasting concepts.

I'm glad Kermode mentioned Argento because I also felt it borrowed a lot from giallo films. I wonder, did he know that before this film was filming the rumor was that she would be in a Suspiria remake. I'm surprised he didn't mention it's similarities to Polanski's Repulsion (especially that bit with her wall cracking). I don't agree that the film get's more colorful or bold in the second half though. It does share many similarities to Perfect Blue..i wish it went even weirder like that did.

Leading actor Natalie Portman delivers A performance that is frightening, intense & committed as the film’s an intense & well directed psychological thriller. (85%) (4/5 stars) (positive)

I thought the movie was beautifully haunting. It took you through a personal journey that showcased her personal conflict, as did her dancing. She was preforming swan lake, which is about a innocent, fragile swan who falls in love with a prince but an evil sorcerer curses the beautiful swan, yada, yada, yada. Her prince try’s to find her but finds himself falling in love with the wrong swan. She is so heart broken she is driven to suicide. The director shows us real life struggles that I can’t put into words. The main character Nina takes us on both the ballet journey and the tragic life experience of the story swan lake. She Interchanges between the two swans. While this is happening Nina is finding herself and her voice. In the end scene Nina has become both characters finding a balance to finally reach perfection. Both the play and Nina’s life come to an end tying the whole story together after she whispers her words “It was perfect...” This movie can simply speak for its self. Natalie Portman to me made this movie. She beautifully portrayed the self conflict and disturbed mindset it took to in body this role. Her features, dancing and acting skills are what made her the crowing jewel of this movie. This comment may cause conflict but such is life. I truly believe this movie was an excellent interpretation of swan lake.

nice to see Kermode likes The Fountain, I think its going to be accepted in the near future as the tarkovskian masterpiece that it truly is. On the other hand im not so keen on other more literal aronofski works like the wrestler or even to a certain degree this one, the black swan

he's totally leaving out the main character's need for perfection which is found in so many young girls, who do not dare to be imperfect in real life ever. I loved how that was created throughout the movie, cause I see it every day.

@83phatman I'm pretty sure Aronofsky has been influenced by Perfect Blue. There's a shot in Requiem that's nearly identical to one in Perfect Blue (the scene of her screaming in the bathtub).

Black Swan is great, but do you know what I want? Black Ron, a psychological thriller about Ronnie Barker, who starts to feel the influence of his darker side - Ronnie Corbett - and who must control the beast (Corbett) within him. Get on it, Aronofsky.

@eveningtsar He's Simon Mayo and this is as much his channel as it is Kermode's (it's called kermodeandmayo). They are good friends and this is part of their succesful and entertaining spiel - Kermode is the overly enthusiastic, almost childlike film buff and Mayo is the more casual filmgoer who, for example, has heard the Wilhelm scream but doesn't know what it's called. They have this "odd couple" thing going on, not entirely unlike Siskel & Ebert. If you don't like it - tough.

Mayo is the one playing a devil's advocate, for the sake of casual moviegoers who tune into the show to find out which movie is worth his $10 in the pocket and 2hrs in a Sunday afternoon, and who don't necessarily care about Kermode's extensive analysis of the movie. And for this show, Kermode sometimes needs to be brought down in the way Mayo does.

If you like Suspiria and Black Swan, then you might like Etoile (1988) featuring Jennifer Connelly. It's only very hard to find this movie....
Black Swan reminds me of the old movies from Polanski like the Tenant en Repulsion.

@13evilpriest13 I picked up on that plot element too, and am incredibly surprised no-one has made more of that, considering there were two virtually shot-for-shot homages in Requiem for a Dream as well, and I found it more reminiscent of Videodrome rather than The Fly, per se. Still, it does it in a way that fits and both I and my fiancée really enjoyed it.

People need to stop wanting to exhibit their cinephilic virility by mentioning Perfect Blue. It is one of Aronofsky's inspirations for BS, and Kon's cinema has been an influence over his whole work. But Perfect Blue is about a whole lot of things that are just absent in Swan. PB is about fan obsession and misguided sense's of ownership over an artist's identity, or things like the objectivication of female actresses in modern entertainment, the fact that they are stuck inbetween a leering brand of oversexualization in pop entertainment especially through the rite of passage of the J-pop girls bands, and a TV world of perverse sexual politics and "auteurs" abusing their power... Black Swan is in a thematic vicinity with PB but the worlds depicted are thoroughly distinct. The whole thing about perfectionism and its articulation with sexual fulfillment is not in PB.

I didn't care for it. Aranofsky was trying to make some surreal mind bender, but I knew what was happening. I thought he held back from making it too confusing, in order to go for awards. Its no where near the same league as Lynch, or Bergman's Persona & Hour of the Wolf. Portman was also quite bad & uninteresting.
