    Hi Lindsay - It is almost worth it just for the tin. And for just practice and sketching. I'd be skeptical about the, "Master", branding as well. There are a LOT of inexpensive watercolors coming out of China and Asia right now, not an issue with that, but the lack of transparency around pigments would make me pause as you did.
    Thanks for posting this Lindsay.
    Have a great week! - Marty

      Totally, I wouldn't claim they are professional by any means but the paints not bad and the tin is fantastic. I think it's worth the price, it's much better than other $20 student sets I've tried.

    Great review as always Lindsay!
    I also used ro be a watercolour purist, but as I get older, like you, I learn to embrace to use and love the materials as they are. I think trying out and started working with gouache was my turning point, I mixed a lot of colors while using gouache and found how important white paints in gouache!
    Now I just enjoy my materials and find myself more relaxed and love making art even more :)

    Well it's a year ago you did this video and I bought a set of 24 watercolours on sale before Christmas 2021. I am a beginner watercolourist. I used to paint in oils. Anyway my set is exactly like this one from Artsy except mine had a label deBoot which peeled off very easily. I live in South Africa. I love the tin and at the moment the colours are good enough for my practising. Thanks Lindsay!

      I was about to say the same thing! I bought a set of these and I’m a Daniel Smith kinda girl and I refused to pay $39.99 for 24 Paul Reubens when I can get 24 full plans of St.Petersburg White Nights for just a bit more. So, I checked one day after I’d been playing in my sketchbook for a bit and saw these for $7.99 with a coupon! I bought five…maybe six. Great gifts, even if I am giving away some friendly stocking stuffer info! Keep an eye out and heck, shoot them an email to let them know you’d drop $45-50 on several if the price drops again (😉) and get some decent paints. Now, I’m in the process of lightfastness testing. So far…YAY! The reds/low tinting should’ve faded and haven’t. Did I luck out? Store closing? I know this, they look soooo much like my friend’s Paul Ruben’s set and we pulled out 24 from her 48 set that I couldn’t tell the difference at all. It’s eerie. Did I happen to get over-runs? Idk. I’m thinking these will definitely be my card paints and the way my house is oriented, I’ve had them in direct sunlight for 8 hrs a day (x 2 months) in Aug. still waiting for fade. I’ve had friends who have bought off brands and got what appeared to be P. Rubens and had a mutual friend order and get what appeared to be Master’s Touch quality a week apart. Bait/switch. Lindsey recommends…and it’s on! Lol. Don’t stop reviews! 💗💗Thx, all! They’re a coupon right now and they’re worth the $15-16 or, honestly, *more*.

    I found this on a closeout, so I had to get it! The tin, the tin! OMG, I hugged it when I saw it. (I wish the Paul Reubens had the same color of tin. Bought PR, returned them without opening because of the pink...) The plastic half-pans are nicer than some Daniel Smith branded half-pans I have. The paints are kind of fun. Lots of unexpected color shifting, but the rather weak Ultramarine still granulates. And some of the other paints do too, so they aren't entirely dye, which is a plus. Some of the color mixes I made are really nice. The dominating selection of browns and black/greys are a little weird, especially with all the duplication. But I can replace those with other paints I have, once I figure out how to dissolve the glue they invariably use to hold the paint to the pan. Would recommend if Amazon carries them again.

    I just purchased the 24 set for under $10 Amazon USD and the 48 set for $15. The sets that I received have pigment, color name and number information included and are labeled as Superior but the colors are the same numbers and names, same chipboard box, cloth, tin etc..... The first thing I noticed while using them is there is little to no flow when painting wet into wet. I though maybe these are formulated wrong and that's why they are so inexpensive. I find them difficult to work with but the lovely tins are the reason I purchased them in the first place and at that price it's a steal just for the tins. The other thing is, several of the paints either cracked when they dried or had surface cracks that look to be ready to flake off. Hard to explain. Have you experienced any of these issues?

    Thanks for another great review and comparison! I know your first impression led you to compare the paints to Paul Rubins (because of the cloth included in the packaging). But the color of the box and the price immediately reminded me of the Pretty Excellent set. How do you think they compare?

      I have both and I don't like these nearly as much as Pretty Excellent. You get less color variety and I noticed that some of the colors feel more gritty and don't flow as well in really wet washes as Pretty Excellent. If it matters to you, I also noticed they don't react as well to salt for the texture trick.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the info Kimberly, I didnt use salt in my demo. I noticed there was less flow but other than black the colors mixed cleanly for me ( you reviewed a 48 set from another brand so if they are the same the other additions may have been chalkier multiple pigment mixes.) That said, the pretty excellent are more transparent and clean looking. The colors in my set were not gritty tho but it might be the selection artsy chose rather than the set the company you reviewed put together. I mention that because of the superior fan palettes. I lived the 42 set but then I bought the cocktail and pastel sets and they were a chalky mess. Same company and paint but the colors and formulation in those colors were terrible.

I ran this by a chemist friend of mine and he said the level you would need to eat would be like 30 tubes worth and the amount in this set would be fine. Still, I think a disclosure is important, even if it is just pigment info and a label in the box. All major paint companies do this, probably out of fear of litigation, but I like knowing if any potentially toxic chemicals are in my paint.

      @@thefrugalcrafter thank you for being such a responsible person, Lindsay. Your technical expertise is continually amazing. What on earth did you major in? 😇 Knowledge of Cads and chromiums and others have made me start dumping my paint water into a big container which then evaporates the water, then have local hazardous waste pick up the residue. Just can't bear adding that gunk into the ground or waste water.

    Where do these hit compared to prima marketing? How do you now feel about the prima marketing watercolors?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are quite different. The prima (and Mungyo, paper fashion and jane davenport) are great when you want lots of flow but they lift too easily (and are a bit too opaque) to later and glaze well. If you want to make a background with lots of color and you want the paint to flow like crazy than prima is great. If you would rather layer your paint and have more controll these are better. Its personal preference.

    I have a feeling that these are made by same Factory as Paul Rubens - the packaging is practically the same. Maybe it is a rebranding of their student line. Even the color selection seems to mirror theirs...

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of companies are trying to copy Paul Rubens success, but these are not the same quality, it's just a look-a-like knock off type situation.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kimberly, I saw your review of the similar 48 set that appears to be from the same factory. It seems that the 24 selection is stronger as a whole compared to the 48 set you reviewed. I have found with some of these sets that the set would be better if they eliminated poor colors. I agree, they are not as good as Paul Rubens but the packaging is very similar. The same was true for their metallic set. but the watercolors are half the price of paul Rubens and I think that's a good value. Do you think the paints we reviewed are the same?

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thefrugalcrafter Yeah, Superior, Artsy, Tinge, Dainaw and Xiley (sp?) all re-brand the exact same items sometimes. The quality between each type of item is really variable (such as in the case of all the different varieties and color counts of fan palettes) making it really hard to rely on any of these brands. When it's a straight up copy of one particular item (like this "master level" set) it's just the label that changes with a new brand name, not the paint. I think you're totally right about the 24 set selection being much better choices compared to the 48 set. There were a lot more problematic pigments in the 48 variation, but both are available as Artsy or Superior. The factory making these appears to be trying to make a profit off the success of Paul Rubens by looking like a cheap alternative to them. When looking closely at the sets we reviewed I saw that the color codes match (ie "Indian Yellow b252", "cadmium red d215" etc) and the only thing different is the stickers on the pans and the text that says "artsy" instead of "superior" on the box. Only about 4 of the 48 colors had a normal salt reaction and flow to the paint, it's possible that it's something in the binder, but I suspect part of the gritty unusual granulation is them not finely grinding their pigments enough?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KimberlyCrick thanks for the info. Maybe it's a different binder. They do seem to want to grab on to the popularity of Paul rubens paint. Your pan labels had pigment info but mine didnt but several viewers said it's on the amazon listing photo (I dont know how I missed it lol!) Sadly some of the companies will charge Paul rubens price instead of a fair price. So, did your box say non toxic too with real cadmium and cobalts? I didnt think it would have the real deal for the price or without the CL label on the box. I though that was a law to sell art products containing those pigments in in America.

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thefrugalcrafter Yes I've seen that recently with these types of sets, marking them non-toxic yet seemingly having cobalts and cadmiums. I'm fairly certain that Pretty Excellent's cobalt blue is not a hue either, though that set is also "non-toxic". I'm not sure what is up with that, doesn't seem right at all. I'd be really curious what the laws are regarding that. I've seen no warnings on Cobalt Blue PB28 in the past, even though I know it's suppose to have the "PROP 65" warning for CA on it.

    How does this work with companies using real pigments and being so cheap? I'm a complete noob but I always thought they weren't using actual pigments similar to artist grade, and were using dyes or something else. BTW, I wouldn't believe them when they claim any lightfastness or cadmium pigments, I mean come on!

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are several ways companies cut costs. 1. Cheaper materials
      2. Cheaper labor
      3. Sourcing materials in bulk
      4. Selling mass market so the profit per item is smaller.
      These companies do all of these things and they also white labled the products to american art and craft companies who mark them up almost double. Actually many of the cheaper products on amaxon ate much better than the big box store brand as they often choose the absolute cheapest product so they can make the biggest profit. I take any lightfast claims with a grain of salt unless it's from an established brand that has undergone blue wool or astm testing. Still, some if these sets are a great value for learning.
