Taking My Wife Sailing For The first Time.. But First, Lets Fix The Boat Ready For Adventures

  • Twahn (My wife) is pretty keen on the sail boat so we found some time to get out on the water and raise the mainsail for the first time. Has been a busy week, working hard to get the sail boat up to spec and ready for some ocean adventures. New oversized anchor, fixed solar and a little fridge were ticked off the list. Just need the tender and we're ready... until the next thing breaks... Cough, Topping Lift & Outhaul😅

Also keep the old anchor, add new rope with eyelet, very handy in bad weather to deploy 2 anchors 45 degrees apart from the bow, or as a stern anchor in various scenarios, in a river channel etc.

Pro tip: If drilling into the boat, you should be drilling a larger hole than needed, fill it with thickened epoxy, then redrilling it to the correct size. This prevents moisture from reaching the core of the boat and rotting the boat from the inside out. You now have holes where water will not only sit from the anchor, but from water rolling over the bow. Not too late to pull it off and make the correction.

The next step on your new anchor setup is a snubber. Basically it takes the load off the roller and onto your large Sampson post just behind your furler. There are phone apps that will also monitor your drift via GPS and sound an alarm if you start dragging anchor while you sleep.

The only issue I can see with the swivel in that spot is if it gets snagged in the hawse pipe or on a deck fitting when you deploy the anchor. You definitely want to mouse the swivel with stainless wire too. This stops it from accidentally coming undone cause you don’t want to lose that sweet anchor. It is a sweet little boat. Can’t wait to see some big adventures in it.

i would respectfully suggest you both do an RYA course or two on sailing, day skipper and even coastal qualifications. It would make a world of difference to confidence and most importantly give the wife the knowledge to get you home if something happened to you. This is so important for safety. I'm a power boater [have RYA Coastal Skipper and yacht master coastal classroom ] but as my wife won't really learn how to even drive the boat, it makes it almost impossible for me to leave PPB in Vic, as it would be irresponsible to put her in the position of danger if i got incapacitated.

Always mouse your shackles up mate. Mousing them is using some decent fine stainless twitch wire, through the hole of the shackle pin, around the shackle leg and back through the pin's eye.( can use good cord, but stanless wire. will last longer. . this will stop them working loose.. All your shackles, not just the ones on your anchor rope and anchor. .Cleavis pins also if they feel loose.. .. be safe , be well.. nice little boat you have :)

Having bought and repaired an old sailing dinghy this year I thought I could give u a few pointers to help get this beautiful boat sailing smoother. 1) Replace important ropes with new ones. Old ropes tend to get less flexible and smooth with the years and salt water therefore replacing the mainsail halyard, the vang and any other ones u think aren't very smooth with new ones will make it a lot better. New ropes are lower friction and much more reliable so I would recommend them. 2) Old boats need a lot of WD-40, especially in rollers in the mast and boom, it will help a lot with making everything smoother. The last thing you want is a pulley or roller getting stuck in strong winds. Finally as others have said make sure you wire that shackle. Can't wait to see your adventures with the boat.

  • @freeholdtacticalmed

One word…EPOXY! Fill holes, paint it on any wood. Epoxy is your friend! Have a secured tie-down ready to clip your anchor shackle when you’ve finally have it settled on the roller. Get rid of the swivel on your anchor rode and put in a soft shackle. They’re just as strong as the swivel, they’re lower in profile and much less likely to hang up running through the chain hole. Get a bunch of them, they’re awesome to have on the boat! Single-handing the boat is great, BUT, if you get your wife into sailing, you’ll always have a sailing partner. That’s an important thing…trust me (I don’t).

    • @freeholdtacticalmed
      @freeholdtacticalmed 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Trick out the V-berth with some mood lighting, RED LED’s on a rheostat for night vision. Get an anchor snubber…use it. Make a boom tent so you can get out of the sun/rain. Electronics help but always look at your windex…if it’s getting snotty, take in a reef or heave to.

So good! That anchor is perfect, bigger the better! I highly highly recommend going for an overnighter by yourself first before taking the missus! On a sailboat there are so many noises at night like the halyards rattling against the mast, the helm squeaking etc etc and if you pick a bad anchorage with a cross swell it’s like hell. Got to make sure it’s as idilic as possible when the misso comes along cos you want that pen and boat to last! Unless your misso is a unit and could sleep through an earthquake.

Hi Rod, I.m a Marine Engineer grade 2 and Dieselfitter ny trade,,, i grew up working prawn trawlers out of Cairns ,, then progressably went to ships with sea time aqquired running the engine spaces and fueling the vessel, which bunkered 1.3 million liters of diesel,,,, When I done my oral examination for my Watchkeepers ticket at AMC in Tassie, examiner says, your behind a reef in safe waters , it starts blowing a bit, what do you do? My answer is,, let out a bit chain, ( anchor chain),,, he says okay , its now blowing 40 knots , wind has swung around and your at risk on blowning on to the reef now,,, i said ,, let out a bit more chain,,, examiner says,,,, where are you getting all this chain from?? my reply,,, same fucking place your getting all this wind from,,,,,,,,,,,,
Edit> dont use an achor swivel with rope mate, under pressure the rope will naturally untwine causing a big mess and costing you dollars in the long run, even smaller trawlers bout 15 to 20 meters use all chain for this very reason

To make raising and lowering the sails easier, I highly recommend installing some "lazy jacks". This was one of the first things I did on my '72 Cal 27 T2. You can basically just release the main halyard and the sail *almost* folds itself on the boom. I'd do that when soloing or during rough seas, and just neaten up the folds when I was back at dock (or anchor). It's an easy one day project.

Devil's claw just for extra security to stop anchor deploying accidentally, just sturdy rope tied to the anchor then to the nearest cleat will do the job.

The last layer I leave tacky so when I heat the heat shrink the liquid electrical tape squeezes out each end. This will give you an absolute water proof connection. You should put fresh bedding on any screws/bolts you pull.
    Trust me.
You should rebed every screw and bolt on the exterior.
Me ~ 20 years of boat repairs.
Just a small dab will do, and it is likely to save you 100's hours in the long run.

Did he even fill the old holes from the original bowsprit? He needs to if he didn't.

@@Mardy72 He's likely to be chasing leaks. I've been paid a lot over the years to chase leaks. Basic bedding practices can save one a lot of money, time and frustration.
Nonetheless, I think he is a pretty good DIY guy.
Better than most, but if he worked in a reputable boatyard for a bit he would be much more competent.

Lose the swivel. It’s just another possible point that can break or foul on something. Looks like a sweet boat though. Looking forward to the first fishing trip. 👍🏻👍🏻

It's looking good Rod 👍. I see the passion in your eyes when you are working on your sale boat getting it ready for alot of journeys with your family. I thought it was pretty cool that you and your wife snuck out for a quick trip. Even your wife looks excited, she started cleaning the inside lol 😆. Can't wait to see your boys joining you all. Stay safe out there and have a blessed day. Aloha from Kansas

Attach your inflatable to the back of the sailboat with a tow line so you can go on island excursions and also use it as a lifeboat (god forbid you ever need it for that).
