Doc, Love your videos. My wives 2001 Heritage had a cough occasionally and was hard to diagnose. Finally figured out that it was when the gas tank was lower than half full. The corrugated gas hose in the tank stretches after a while and the hose rubbed on the side of the tank and got a small pinhole in it. It was a little tricky to figure out. Thought some of your listeners might want to know about this issue that I have seen twice on Heritage before. Keep em coming.
Been there many years ago on my 03Ultra. Pulled off interstate and tried to die at exit stop sign, hotter than normal. I believe it was running very lean at the particular speed we were traveling. Took it a little slower and rest of the trip home was ok. Checked resistance of TPS once we were home and sure enough it had a definite bad spot. Did a Thundermax tuner last year decided to replace it again as we are around 138k now. Kept the old one as a spare as it is still good but feel better with a new one on it. We thank you for your continued support and info.

I am impressed. I really didn't expect a response. Love your videos. I am guessing with 86,000 miles mine is do for a change. Seems to have intermitten sputter from a stop sign. p2138,p2127,p1510,po113. Runs down the road 42 mpg. intermitten engine light. @@LowCountryHarleyDavidson 1st had p0113 iat solved , Then battery light, regultaor rectifier solved, Now p0113, p1510',p2127, p2138. mistakenly replaced iat with non harley part so that explains p0113. kind of shopping for a take off intake, may try removing the retaining cover clips and just swap unless I notice something with gears. I have had harleys since the 70s and spend a lot on parts though 0 on service. If I were closer it would be worth swinging by for a diag. I ride 70 miles to my favorite dealer to buy parts.
thanks Doc, i owned 2014 St glide and the bike started to act specially on idle or sometime when cruise control is on. hopefully loose its bad connection /dirt inside.

Has a ragged patch, just as throttle opens a tiny bit. Realy dosnt like ticking along steady around town. Fine under power, and everywhere else, just that first tiny touch. S.E tuner cables should be here this week, so will plug it into record mode for a while and see if that shows where the issue is. Tks again.

She gonna visit the 1 guy in town that realy knows what he's about. (small town on West Aussie coast) He has 650 Harleys on his shop books. Not that many in the area & Lotta guys travel a long way from sth and nth for his work, so I think we're in good hands :) Im just watching and learning ☺. Gotta say i love this sporty. So much time wasted. (kinda)
On my 08 roadking I had a whipe out and it started to idle high but its electronic so no adjustment. Turns out if i turn it off with more than 0 throttle it needs to be reset. This video was my first thought but after digging further I found out it wasn't the sensor.
Thanks for the info Doc! I have a 2020 Softail Standard that has an overly stiff throttle position sensor. It wears out my wrist after 1/2 hour of riding. I changed handlebars and decided to disassemble the TPS to see what was going on. If I ruin it I"ll buy another one. I'm trying to figure out how to remove the splined cog on the end of the sensor without destroying the sensor. Do you have any idea how to do that?
Doc do you have a video on the Cam Position Sensor? I have an intermittent engine light that’s been coming on for years and I believe someone said it was either a ground issue and or this sensor possibly needed replacing. It’s on a 2000 FXDX. THANKS
I have a question DOC - I have a 2014 Streetglide Special , 26k , the issue I’m having is that when I’m on the highway and shifting up the bike sometimes seems as it looses power for a second or 3 so I release and re engage and it’s fine happens in higher gears. Kind of like as if it’s spuddering and not all the time here and there any insight to for me to look into Doc ! Thanks for your input

Older than 4 years replace. Have someone check charging system. Spark plugs and wires depending on mileage then fuel filter…Doc

I’ve got a 2021 street glide special that has 18K miles on it and I’ve just noticed it had that same code. I’m just wondering if it’s too early to be that or a broken wire or something?
Most of the time on recent models it is a clitch. It occurs most of the time with riders who shut off motor with the handlebar switch while their palm has the throttle rolled on a bit. You should still have it checked out…..Doc
Interesting. But problems I don't have with an Evo with a carburetor. I know Harley needed to go electronic to meet EPA requirements but damn I love the simplicity of the older cycles.
Love the higher resolution camera! Are there metal gears to replace the hard nylon? Would they be preferable or force wear sooner where you can’t get to it? Thanks Doc!
Nylon gears can be bullet proof. Not I mod I would recommend. As proof, the old indestructible Maytag washing machine transmissions used white nylon gears.
I’m working on a 2014 ultra ..I’ve replaced the throttle sensor and I’ve checked all wires between throttle and throttle body and from the ecu to throttle body and the only thing I found is no voltage on the high/ low wires but have questions on if m testing the right way and could it be the ecu
Yes it could end up being the ECM but more likely a wire near the neck that is internally semi-broken. Won’t see it. Got to pull inch by inch till you feel the break….Doc

Quick question: 2003 Harley Road King EFI FLHRI Replacing the TPS is pretty straight forward so my question is...Is there any calibration or setting for this TPS or is it a "bolt on and go"??? I don't see anything about Calibration so Im assuming there is none but I wanted to run it past the Guru first..
I've got a 2009 street glide and recently it went into limp mode and has a surging idle with these codes P1511, P1514, p2105, P2135. Do you think this would come from the TPS sensor going bad? thanks! Great Video!
More likely the pins and connections in the connector to Throttle Control Mech. If you are lucky all you need is to replace the female connectors in the connector with the newer updated parts.
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson found the issue. The brown/orange wire in that plug has a break in it when wiggling the wire with the Fluke meter right at the edge of the female connector. Thank you again 🙏🏽
Not sure what you mean by calibrate. Usual issue is owner turning off bike with handlebar off switch while slightly rolling throttle ( not knowing he is doing this) so the bike ECM remembers where throttle plate is. But when turning on bike the TpS does not match last known information. So turn on bike without touching throttle. Wait 20 seconds. Turn off 20 seconds. Repeat 2 more times. All will be calibrated

I know it’s been a few years but, the electronic model . Can it be replaced or do we have to buy a new throttle body. I notice mine has metal clips holding it on and in big letters it says WARRANTY VOID IF REMOVED.

Great Video, one question. My Iron 883 model 2020 hast very high Idle consistently about 1600-2300 RPM... The ecu tells me the Error p0122 Sometimes and p0507 every time. Engine light is in every time. Should i replace the TPS? Shes got only 10000km
Start by readjusting your throttle cables. If you have chsnged the handlebars you have a throttle position sensor wire problem. Follow all the wires. If you have changed the air cleaner. You might have a leak. Maybe a un supported throttle body so an air leak at manifold seals…..Doc
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson yes i changed the handlebars and the odometer to the Side. Throttle cables are fine the throttle flap opens and closes correct. I installed an Arlen Ness Big sucker too. Thank i have to Take a Look at the wires that i extended an Air leaks. Thank you for your time Doc
I have a P2127 TGS2 Low/Open and p1510 codes w/check engine light on, but my Harley Softail Standard is running fine, it's been on for about 2 months, finally was able to get it to my dealer, and they said it's a sensor. It confused because like I said it's not giving me any problems. It's a new bike w/5500 miles on it
Communications could have been better from your dealer. I believe they found a connector to a sensor that had questionable terminals. The bike ran ok for now but this connector had loose male to female terminals that would have failed down the road....Doc
I get that code on my 15 Rg at start up every so often for some reason. It never happens while riding. When it do pop up, the bike runs sluggish. Once I clear the code, bike runs fine again.
P2138 TGS correlation error. Twist Grip Sensor wiring check for poor connection. Rubbed through wire insulation ( from install in aftermarket handlebars) if all wires and connections are good then voltage testing is next….Doc
help Doc...2010 street glide, i need those gears for the butterfly and cant find a part number , if anyone has that number it would be greatly appreciated... my symptom was a rapid click when i switch to run, and fuel pump didn't pressure, but switch off and to run again and all is normal... i removed the clipped cover and sure enough 2 teeth missing, the second and the third. it appeared to shutter enough the first try to position it, that it would grab the second time every time. i was on a road trip at the time, lucky/glad it didn't leave me stranded.
What about a fluctuating idle? My 09 road king will go from 1100 rpm to 700 up to 1200 then below 700 and sometimes turn off while idling in neutral at a red light. Seems like once engine gets to temperature idle fluctuates
My first thought is an intake seal is leaking and allowing air in. Could also be the IAC pintle has excessive carbon on it or is failing. And of coarse many other possibilities. Fuel filter, holes in fuel line in tank, Not a correct tune, bad Engine temp sensor.....bring it to your local expert and them check these out.....Doc
Hi, I have a 2021 Police Ultra, when at 70 I torque it to pass a semi, the tach fluctuates. Also, the cruise control is deactivated on a hill, is it related to the throttle positioning sensor?
Can this affect the cruis control on an 2016 FLSTN with Electronic throttle? I did the diagnostic with the run/offswitch + ignition+ crctrl + forward throttle and all got the green light..CR/CTRL still not working ps I also replace original switches on CR/Ctrl
You have done everything correctly. I suggest checking brake light functions. as if the front switch is twitchy and is sending a false signal and keeping the system from activating....Doc
I have a 2005 HARLEY DELUXE with this issue. Replaced the TPS but the issue is still there. Is there a way to adjust the TPS? Would a weak battery cause the TPS to fluctuate? Currently it will not hold an idle.
Yes there is a slight adjustment possibility. But I have to ask How are your intake seals? And are you running 8 degree injectors when the 25 degree injectors with the right software run and idle so much better....Doc

Hi Doc, looking at this video and I'm wondering if this could be the trouble with my bike. It's a XL 1200C, it's a 2011but only has 18000 miles. I can't see any DTC codes. But doing 30-40 mph I'm getting a misfire and jerking. The nearest dealer is at Edinburgh or Glasgow about 150 miles from Aberdeen. What do you think. Och I'm fair seek aboot this doc. Thanks Alan.
Is your bike completly stock? Does this misfire only happen at this part of the throttle? Have you checked your intake manifold seals? Too many questions to be able to say yes....Doc
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson Hi Doc thanks for getting back to me. Yes the bike is stock aside from the mufflers, which are Harley but the cats are out. Stock airbox. It's only at around 30mph in traffic. The bike will act up, missing and jerking around. I haven't had the manifold off at any time. Thanks for any advice you can pass along. Cheers, Alan.
Purchased a used 2011 SG from HD with 40,000 couple mi.I rode it for a couple weeks then when I stop at light the throttle will Rev up & down a little and tbw won't do anything. I've taken it to a reputable shop we thought we had it? But no it did it again another 4 different times while on a Run this is not good on a two lane back road with 270 bikes behind you,could any one have an idea?
Wow. SG has custom bars? I would remove all TBW components and look them over. wiring could be cut, damaged or pinched. the TB connectors could be of the old style and not making the right connection. There is a video on this. The gears in the TB could be bad. Do you have a Tuner connected like A Power Commander? Take it Off!!!.....Doc
Hey Doc, interesting video, I have somewhat of a issue with my 18 SGS. It has about 15000 miles on it and stage 4. My issue is different but when I am red light and I go I have a hesitation issue from my bike. It is really annoying, only from the start when I start to go. Doesn’t do it all the time but at least half the time. Jus sputters and then all of a sudden is goes and only from the start. Super annoying, could this be the same issue in my bike?
Had the same issue on my 18 Limited from 15000 miles on. Took it to 3 diffrrent dealers in DC area. No code so they said nothing wrong. I suggested a re flash( stock everything)? They looked at me like i was crazy. Did an air filter oil bypass & seemed to help. Maybe carbon on top of piston causing valves to problem up?
@@johngloede8222 yah I dunno, you’re suggesting venting to the atmosphere or catch can from breather bolts? I was wanting to get some headers, and the HD smart tune added with my screaming eagle tuner and then get it dynoed. Maybe it is a bit of a mapping issue.
Front Cylinder no combustion detected. Could be as simple as a loose spark plug wire, a failing O2 sensor, a crazy short exhaust with no baffles, a dropped head valve...The list is endless. Take it to your local dealer.....Doc
I'm at 150k doing fine. 1511, 2135 codes since bike was new every now n then. Wires ends was bad a new . It clears n goes on for many miles b4 it might do it again. Goes into limp mode . Stop n clear it and go on.might be time to replace it 2010 , 150k on it.

Hi Doc i m using road king 2016 model, i drop my bike at work shop for change oil and service, mileage meter was 9289, when i collected bike meter shows 16.5k, i complaint to work shop they said ECU has been remov to check another bike for 2 days and reinstall back that why mileage has been change they are trying to fix the problem but no success, i like to know whats cause and solution to bring back actual mileage Regards now facing problem with mileage on meter, actually mileage is 9200
The ECM has the mileage in it. The other bike has the higher mileage. The speedometer after 35 miles reflects the ECM mileage of the higher miles...you can not turn back the hands of time...new speedometer needs to be ordered ...Doc

I’ve got a 2021 street glide special that has 18K miles on it and I’ve just noticed it had that same code. I’m just wondering if it’s too early to be that or a broken wire or something?
Most of the time on recent models it is a clitch. It occurs most of the time with riders who shut off motor with the handlebar switch while their palm has the throttle rolled on a bit. You should still have it checked out…..Doc
Interesting. But problems I don't have with an Evo with a carburetor. I know Harley needed to go electronic to meet EPA requirements but damn I love the simplicity of the older cycles.

Nylon gears can be bullet proof. Not I mod I would recommend. As proof, the old indestructible Maytag washing machine transmissions used white nylon gears.
I’m working on a 2014 ultra ..I’ve replaced the throttle sensor and I’ve checked all wires between throttle and throttle body and from the ecu to throttle body and the only thing I found is no voltage on the high/ low wires but have questions on if m testing the right way and could it be the ecu
Yes it could end up being the ECM but more likely a wire near the neck that is internally semi-broken. Won’t see it. Got to pull inch by inch till you feel the break….Doc

Quick question: 2003 Harley Road King EFI FLHRI Replacing the TPS is pretty straight forward so my question is...Is there any calibration or setting for this TPS or is it a "bolt on and go"??? I don't see anything about Calibration so Im assuming there is none but I wanted to run it past the Guru first..
Should be a plug and play with stock ECM. Buells and ThunderMax have to be calibrated...Doc
I've got a 2009 street glide and recently it went into limp mode and has a surging idle with these codes P1511, P1514, p2105, P2135. Do you think this would come from the TPS sensor going bad? thanks! Great Video!
More likely the pins and connections in the connector to Throttle Control Mech. If you are lucky all you need is to replace the female connectors in the connector with the newer updated parts.

@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson found the issue. The brown/orange wire in that plug has a break in it when wiggling the wire with the Fluke meter right at the edge of the female connector. Thank you again 🙏🏽
Yes similar codes with my '09 UC, had the limp mode issue or nothing a couple times. Thinking those pins or a crimped wire also.
Heya Doc i have a 2019 xl1200ns with a P0122. Any pointers on how to calibrate a TPS??
Not sure what you mean by calibrate. Usual issue is owner turning off bike with handlebar off switch while slightly rolling throttle ( not knowing he is doing this) so the bike ECM remembers where throttle plate is. But when turning on bike the TpS does not match last known information. So turn on bike without touching throttle. Wait 20 seconds. Turn off 20 seconds. Repeat 2 more times. All will be calibrated

I know it’s been a few years but, the electronic model . Can it be replaced or do we have to buy a new throttle body. I notice mine has metal clips holding it on and in big letters it says WARRANTY VOID IF REMOVED.

Great Video, one question. My Iron 883 model 2020 hast very high Idle consistently about 1600-2300 RPM... The ecu tells me the Error p0122 Sometimes and p0507 every time. Engine light is in every time. Should i replace the TPS? Shes got only 10000km
Start by readjusting your throttle cables. If you have chsnged the handlebars you have a throttle position sensor wire problem. Follow all the wires. If you have changed the air cleaner. You might have a leak. Maybe a un supported throttle body so an air leak at manifold seals…..Doc
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson yes i changed the handlebars and the odometer to the Side. Throttle cables are fine the throttle flap opens and closes correct. I installed an Arlen Ness Big sucker too. Thank i have to Take a Look at the wires that i extended an Air leaks. Thank you for your time Doc

I have a P2127 TGS2 Low/Open and p1510 codes w/check engine light on, but my Harley Softail Standard is running fine, it's been on for about 2 months, finally was able to get it to my dealer, and they said it's a sensor. It confused because like I said it's not giving me any problems. It's a new bike w/5500 miles on it
Communications could have been better from your dealer. I believe they found a connector to a sensor that had questionable terminals. The bike ran ok for now but this connector had loose male to female terminals that would have failed down the road....Doc
I get that code on my 15 Rg at start up every so often for some reason. It never happens while riding. When it do pop up, the bike runs sluggish. Once I clear the code, bike runs fine again.

P2138 TGS correlation error. Twist Grip Sensor wiring check for poor connection. Rubbed through wire insulation ( from install in aftermarket handlebars) if all wires and connections are good then voltage testing is next….Doc

my symptom was a rapid click when i switch to run, and fuel pump didn't pressure, but switch off and to run again and all is normal... i removed the clipped cover and sure enough 2 teeth missing, the second and the third. it appeared to shutter enough the first try to position it, that it would grab the second time every time. i was on a road trip at the time, lucky/glad it didn't leave me stranded.
There never was part numbers. HD never said we could disassemble….complete assembly needed…..Doc

What about a fluctuating idle? My 09 road king will go from 1100 rpm to 700 up to 1200 then below 700 and sometimes turn off while idling in neutral at a red light. Seems like once engine gets to temperature idle fluctuates
My first thought is an intake seal is leaking and allowing air in. Could also be the IAC pintle has excessive carbon on it or is failing. And of coarse many other possibilities. Fuel filter, holes in fuel line in tank, Not a correct tune, bad Engine temp sensor.....bring it to your local expert and them check these out.....Doc
I have a 98 ultra classic and won't stay idling. Could it be the fuel regulator housing.

Hi, I have a 2021 Police Ultra, when at 70 I torque it to pass a semi, the tach fluctuates. Also, the cruise control is deactivated on a hill, is it related to the throttle positioning sensor?
Tach fluctuating will turn off cruise and effect power output…..Doc

Can this affect the cruis control on an 2016 FLSTN with Electronic throttle? I did the diagnostic with the run/offswitch + ignition+ crctrl + forward throttle and all got the green light..CR/CTRL still not working ps I also replace original switches on CR/Ctrl
You have done everything correctly. I suggest checking brake light functions. as if the front switch is twitchy and is sending a false signal and keeping the system from activating....Doc
I have a 2005 HARLEY DELUXE with this issue. Replaced the TPS but the issue is still there. Is there a way to adjust the TPS? Would a weak battery cause the TPS to fluctuate? Currently it will not hold an idle.
Yes there is a slight adjustment possibility. But I have to ask How are your intake seals? And are you running 8 degree injectors when the 25 degree injectors with the right software run and idle so much better....Doc
Hey Doc, will a bad TPS always trip a code or could you have a bad sensor with no code?
At the start of a TPS going bad, it maybe sloppy and work and not set a code, but i feel you would know your bike is not running just right....Doc

I just installed V&H Short Shots, larger Air Breather, Pilot Jet 45 and 185 Main Jet with 3 washers on slide needle
I'm out 2.5 turns trying to smooth my bike from lurching a bit at steady Throttle

Hi Doc, looking at this video and I'm wondering if this could be the trouble with my bike. It's a XL 1200C, it's a 2011but only has 18000 miles. I can't see any DTC codes. But doing 30-40 mph I'm getting a misfire and jerking. The nearest dealer is at Edinburgh or Glasgow about 150 miles from Aberdeen. What do you think. Och I'm fair seek aboot this doc. Thanks Alan.
Is your bike completly stock? Does this misfire only happen at this part of the throttle? Have you checked your intake manifold seals? Too many questions to be able to say yes....Doc
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson Hi Doc thanks for getting back to me. Yes the bike is stock aside from the mufflers, which are Harley but the cats are out. Stock airbox. It's only at around 30mph in traffic. The bike will act up, missing and jerking around. I haven't had the manifold off at any time.

Purchased a used 2011 SG from HD with 40,000 couple mi.I rode it for a couple weeks then when I stop at light the throttle will Rev up & down a little and tbw won't do anything. I've taken it to a reputable shop we thought we had it?
But no it did it again another 4 different times while on a Run this is not good on a two lane back road with 270 bikes behind you,could any one have an idea?
Wow. SG has custom bars? I would remove all TBW components and look them over. wiring could be cut, damaged or pinched. the TB connectors could be of the old style and not making the right connection. There is a video on this. The gears in the TB could be bad. Do you have a Tuner connected like A Power Commander? Take it Off!!!.....Doc
Hey Doc, interesting video, I have somewhat of a issue with my 18 SGS. It has about 15000 miles on it and stage 4. My issue is different but when I am red light and I go I have a hesitation issue from my bike. It is really annoying, only from the start when I start to go. Doesn’t do it all the time but at least half the time. Jus sputters and then all of a sudden is goes and only from the start. Super annoying, could this be the same issue in my bike?
Had the same issue on my 18 Limited from 15000 miles on. Took it to 3 diffrrent dealers in DC area. No code so they said nothing wrong. I suggested a re flash( stock everything)? They looked at me like i was crazy. Did an air filter oil bypass & seemed to help. Maybe carbon on top of piston causing valves to problem up?

I was wanting to get some headers, and the HD smart tune added with my screaming eagle tuner and then get it dynoed. Maybe it is a bit of a mapping issue.

Front Cylinder no combustion detected. Could be as simple as a loose spark plug wire, a failing O2 sensor, a crazy short exhaust with no baffles, a dropped head valve...The list is endless. Take it to your local dealer.....Doc

I'm at 150k doing fine. 1511, 2135 codes since bike was new every now n then. Wires ends was bad a new . It clears n goes on for many miles b4 it might do it again. Goes into limp mode . Stop n clear it and go on.might be time to replace it 2010 , 150k on it.

Hi Doc i m using road king 2016 model, i drop my bike at work shop for change oil and service, mileage meter was 9289, when i collected bike meter shows 16.5k, i complaint to work shop they said ECU has been remov to check another bike for 2 days and reinstall back that why mileage has been change they are trying to fix the problem but no success, i like to know whats cause and solution to bring back actual mileage

The ECM has the mileage in it. The other bike has the higher mileage. The speedometer after 35 miles reflects the ECM mileage of the higher miles...you can not turn back the hands of time...new speedometer needs to be ordered ...Doc
