- We are wandering through the ruins at the archaeological site of Carthage on Byrsa Hill in Tunis, Tunisia. Byrsa was a fortified citadel situated above the Phoenician harbor in ancient Carthage, and it was also the name of the hill on which it stood. The citadel was besieged by Scipio Aemilianus Africanus during the Third Punic War, leading to the city's defeat and destruction in 146 BCE. The Byrsa citadel later became the seat of the proconsul of Africa within the Roman Empire. Gerak Darma's team is exploring this historic site's remnants of walls and foundations. The panoramic views of the modern suburb below and the Gulf of Tunis are breathtaking from atop this hill.
I'm excited to be here on this ancient site.
One of the most beautiful ruins I have seen.
Nice and sunny day for us to explore these ruins.
Love the view that the ancient Phoenician chose.
