This has been by far the best video tutorial for a concrete candle! So much information that I did not get from this other lady who has a channel on here. Vital information like setting the concrete container aside to ‘cure’ before applying the sealant…and not to pour it till the top! I love how well you described the concrete folding over, I struggled with that same air bubbles issue near the top /bottom area & I made my mixture a little thicker cuz I was worried it would not dry right, now I’m gonna definitely try to make it a little bit more watery. - I have the same molds and got way more air bubbles even after a lot of tapping 🤦🏻♀️
I am so happy that we were able to help. It's hard getting all the air out but with that method you can get 99% of it out. For that mold we use 225 grams of cement and 45 grams of water. That seems to make it the perfect consistency.

Hi! New to cement vessel making! I've done some research and lots of candle makers say that varathane isn't safe. I did buy a little can of varathane water-based and was hoping to use it. But I just want to double check that it is safe to burn a candle inside using this sealer. Thank you for posting this video it has been very educational for me! And I hope to hear back from you 😊
I've never had an issue with it but some people to steer clear of it for one reason or another.

Very nice job I really appreciated, is the painting do u use inside the jar it’s doesn’t effect the quality of candle when u poor it? And if I need it in a Matt colour what u could advise? And there’s any solution for the air bobble damage ?
It does not affect it at all. All the colors are matt colors it's the coating that makes it shiny so just leave the coating off the outside and just do the inside only to seal it. No solution for that really. I have tried to add cement after the fact and it does not work. Just use less water as it's the water that creates them.

Great video..though for making plant pots do u have to soak them in water before sealing them?
You don't need to if using for plants, but it does help the sealer from soaking in too fast so you may use more to seal it.
I learned the most about making concrete containers from your video. Thank you so much. I went to buy the same Varathane polyurethane you had but the guy at Lowe’s and Home Depot told me that sealant is for interior wood. Does your can say it’s for cement or does it matter? I ended up buying a gallon of concrete sealer from Lowe’s. I live in Ottawa , Canada so maybe there are different types? Can you help me out with this please ? Thank you.
I can't say much for Canada but I was using the regular sealant but now I too use concrete sealer.

Is your vibrator the bigger of the two rectangular ones? i have the biggest one and i find it is vibrating too fast. on the lowest setting i can make it. i wish i had bought the smaller rectangular one. i really enjoyed seeing the video and was really happy to see the vibrator.
It's the smaller of the 2. I love using it.

I leave it probably about 1 minute and I go about half way between low and high in most cases. It also helps to tap the sides a few times while it's on the table.
Do you have a trick for getting concrete vessels out of the cylindrical mold you have in the background? I have that one and it is so hard for me to use.
If you are referring to the round one, it's very hard. I just roll it down to the edge at the bottom and then pull it out all the way around and pull it over the lip then down.
Hello thank you for the tutorial! I wonder if you use water based sealer, can we wash the vessel? Like if the candle is run out and we want to wash the vessel and repurpose it. Anyway, success for you!
Yes you can do that. Most people will make a small plant planter or a pencil holder with them.
Hello very nice video how about the littles bubbles on the surface every time I sand it from beneath it has air bubbles can I avoid that?and something else this cement it’s the same with white one?and the color on the bottom it’s lighter why this happend?
It's hard to completely avoid them but you can get less if you use a bit less water. The more water you use, the more bubbles you will get.

It's 9oz of wax.

Yes! But there is also some sealant that you can dip the vessel in and it doesn't change the finish of the natural concrete.
You don't have to as sometimes I don't seal the outside. But you should seal the inside for sure.
Hi! I am new to this and want to know how do you tell how much a particular vessel would need of cement to water ratio?
It's really a trial and error situation. Start by weighing what you add and then pour. Then see what you have left over and subtract that and do it again. At some point you will find the right combination and weight. Remember, you don't want your cement too dry but you also don't want it like water. A nice pancake batter is good then just add a bit more cement and you should be there.
Very informative. Can I just ask the polyurethane, is it completely safe for candles. Living in the UK it appears to be such an issue what you use for candle vessels
In my opinion only, it is. I'm no professional and you should always do your own testing and research but I have never had an issue with it.

Loved your video thank you. I'm in a few Facebook concrete groups that make candle vessels. Alot people say that sealer you use release toxins when the candle is burning what is your thoughts on this issue. Thanks Henrietta
From my research in the past, once it's hardened it can't release anything. In fact it does not even burn if you put a flame to it. But you don't have to seal the cement, you can leave it as is but you may have some wax seep through it. But I am no scientist so use at your own caution and do your own research.
@@CarolinaPicker I want to seal cause the vessel looks terrible inside has the wax burns down. I tried making my own sealer using beeswax, caruba wax and fractionated coconut oil
I understand completely. We are now testing this: directcolors.com/krystal-kote-high-gloss-sealer/ and it seems to be working very well so far. It's not a poly but it's doing a nice job. I will be making a video on it as soon as we test it a bit more.
@@CarolinaPicker Anything that's poly is a plastic and plastic releases toxic fumes when burned. It does not catch on fire, just melts, much like a plastic bag.
Hello if I could get your advice I’d appreciate your feedback. I made some containers with cement all and used the same sealer but it was not the triple thick one. I am now testing my candle in it and it’s leaving a stain where the wax has melted on the walls of the container. Is this because I did not seal it with triple thick polyurethane or is that just how they are?
I would like my containers to be washed and reused but not if it leaves that stain on the inside.
Please help!
There will always be some staining using cement but the triple thick does help with that.
What size is the candle jar in ounces after it's done
It really depends on the size container you make but the one in the video is 9oz.
How much concrete and water do you use for the cilinder mold?
The cylinder mold I use 270g cement and 50g of water. Just keep in mind that if you are using paint to color the vessel, the paint will thicken it so you will have to add more water as needed. If you are using pigment then that is the correct amount of water.
Hiya, how do you measure/know how much cement you need?
When we start with a new mold, it's really a trial and error that helps us. We basically mix a red cup full of cement, weigh it, pour it and see how much is left in the cup by weight. Subtract what's left by what you had and that's a great start. Then we go from there. Remember, that total weight includes water so if for example your weight used is 280g, then use about 255g of cement and 25g of water. Be sure it's not too thick. If it is, just add more water, pour that one and the next time use 245g cement and 40g water. At some point you will narrow it down just right to what you need. Then write that down for that mold and you are set.
is that stuff strong enough when we accidentally drop it?
I have tested mine by dropping them from 3 feet on carpet and hard wood floor. They hold fairly good. Anything higher than 3 feet I have never tested and of course if you drop it on cement (like a walk way) it will probably break.
Did you only use pure cement and water or did u add any aggregates?

How can you find out how much cement and water is needed for each mold? You said for this particular one you only needed 350g of cement and 60g of water? Obviously it won’t be the same for each mold, how did you get these exact measurements?
It's a trial and error when you first start with a mold. I always start with weighting how much cement and water I put in and then pour the mold then adjust from there until I have the exact amount for that mold. It can take many different tries before getting it.
Is the polyurethane you use the same as the polyacrylic I see others using? Are both ok for heat for the candles? Dumb question because u r using but lol if not the same as polyacrylic does it matter which I use? I just want safe for burning of candles etc.
I don't know if it's the same because I have not seen the other videos, however, we have used that one for a long time with no issues. However, we have been testing something different. @@CarolinaPicker sorry to bug but u at least responded to me lol. I used cement all got a great mold. Do you water bath or anything before you seal?
I personally don't do a water bath, however, I know people that do. The theory behind it is so the cement don't soak up the sealant. My opinion is that you are adding moisture back into the cement and then sealing it into the vessel. When that heats up, it has to escape via steam somehow. I believe it will cause cracks. I may be totally wrong on that lol. But either way, I let my cement set for at least 24 to 48 hours to get as much moisture out as I can then seal it.
i don't really have a lot of knowledge about using polyurethane, but is it safe to use if it is heated?
also, through my research, i found that some are having problems about the wax seeping through the pot that's why oil-like stains appear on the outside. If I use this, will this solve the problem?
When you seal the cement, it should stop the seeping of wax. That's why the polyurethane is put on it. I have never had a problem using the "water" based polyurethane. However, I have started using a different sealer. I will be making a video about that soon. Be sure to be subscribed so you get notified when I place that video.

How do you determine how much cement and water to mix for a new mold?
It's really a trial and error type deal. I mix up a red cup full of cement with water measuring the cement then measuring the water, mix it and if I need more of either I measure what I'm adding. Then I weigh the entire mix. I pour the mold and then weigh what's left in the cup. Subtract that from the total weight and that will tell you how much total weight you need. Then I just do some math to figure out what part of that was cement and what part was water and do it again with those weights and pour the same mold and see if any it left over or I was short. Then I adjust as needed. After about 3 times of doing this, you should have the exact weight of cement needed and water needed. Sounds confusing but really once you do it for a mold, it's easy for other new molds.

Hi there i have watched your video a few times and i am curious... google says that this sealant is flammable when wet...? and home depot does not list anything besides wood on their description box for this sealant. i am sure it is safe because you have been testing and selling candles with it. but is there any other proof that this will not cause a candle to explode?
It may be flammable when wet, but remember, you let it cure and dry for 24 to 48 hours before burning the candle. As long as you let the vessel dry out for a day or 2 at the least and 5 to 7 days is better then seal it, you should be fine. However, we have switched to a different sealant now. We used that one for a few years with no issues, but we like the new one better. We will be making a video on it soon. But it's that one we show in this video from Direct Colors.

May i know how long you leave the jar to dry. I left my jar about 5 hours.its dried but cracked and very soft.
Usually it will dry within a few hours. I left mine out for 24 though. If yours is dried but cracked and soft, you may have added too much.

Sorry, I did not know you were speaking of the concrete, I thought it was the sealer. If your concrete is cracking and not drying fast enough, you have too much water in it. Try reducing the amount but just a few grams at a time. This may take you a few tries but keep reducing it until it's right.

Is concrete and cement the same thing?
Cement is an ingredient in Concrete. Cement is the binding material. Concrete is cement + aggregate + water. Aggregates are the filler in Concrete, made of various types of sand and or gravel. Cement can be used to make things without aggregates, but is not as strong as Concrete, so Concrete is used for buildings and sidewalks.

Why should the sealer be water-based?
Water base is best because it does not give off a smell or black smoke when burning the candle
