“Free speech doesn’t mean just keep yapping.” Real words of wisdom. Meaning you have every right to say something meaningful without being censored, but don’t talk out of your a$$ just because you can.
That "method man" line is probaly the best line ERB have ever written. Quandruple entendre there: 1. I'll tear apart your Wu -- Sun Wu is Sun Tzu's actual name, Tzu is a title . 2. "Wu" is the Chinese concept of fighting spirit, so the line means "I'll break your spirit". 3. "I'll break apart your wu with my method" reference to the Socratic Method, systematically deconstructing an idea. 4. "Method, Man" obvious Wu Tang reference
There's one more meaning to this. Pederasty (sexual activity between an older male and a younger boy) was very common in ancient Greece, especially with the philosophers and their students. Using the Socratic method (Socrates' method) on Sun Tzu would be like teaching him (Sun), implying that Socrates was the master, and/or having "sexual activities" with him, but in a derogatory manner.
i feel like the "better men" bar could almost be heard as betterment, saying theyre more for improving upon themselves instead of trying to get others to improve from them.
For the “bowl is most useful when it’s empty” part and how he’s applying it to this situation, the “empty bowl” is the position they are in, unified (for now) against a divided enemy. Changing that situation, or “filling the bowl,” can only harm their position. Let them stew, then keep letting them stew, and never fill your bowl with that stew. They will destroy each other, and attacking again can only serve to use your resources, and may cause them to reunite against a common enemy that had been forgotten.
I thought it was just saying that an empty bowl can be filled with anything being potentially useful for anything where as filling it, or using their advantage would limit them
@@marcoaraiza9381 Well, yes. That’s how the wisdom is originally meant, putting noodles in a bowl makes a bowl less useful for other things. In this case, the “noodles” would be an attack, as Sun is advising. The “emptiness” here is doing literally nothing, staying quiet, and letting the enemy tear each other apart. That is, as I was saying, how the metaphor is being applied here.
Jesus man! Bar breakdown. Philosophy breakdown. History breakdown. You are so much more than just some TH-cam rapper/reactor! You got a ton of knowledge man. 🐐
I really appreciate how, unlike others, you can analyze the battle from rapping and lore points of view simultaneously. Everyone else usually either points out beat, or historical facts, or simply says nothing. And the fact that you can explain bars with your own words, without reading out Wikia, is very cool. Definitely best and most interesting reactions, mate! And the intro track sounds dope. That's a sub right there!
If you noticed, every philosopher rapped in a style that fit their own philosophy's style. Confucius placed a lot of tradition and respect while Sun was all about the aggression. Voltaire did his own thing while Nietzsche was bold and forceful in his rapping. Their philosophies may not have been as represented in what words they were saying, but I felt it was clever that they could have a full back and forth battle with both sides rapping 100% in character for repping their philosophical stance. Also, not sure if it was covered, but the line about the bowl being empty was Lao saying that the opportunity created by Sun's crafty diversion would only be an opportunity so long as the East didn't act on it (thus leaving the opportunity there for the taking indefinitely), which directly contradicts Sun's whole angle of taking the initiative in fighting the opponent on all fronts both physical and mental. Thus, Sun got upset and couldn't see the sense in it. As for the Confucius eyebrows joke, most traditional artwork of Confucius had his eyebrows never quite done correctly. They were always lopsided in some fashion, whether position or appearance. I am not sure if the real Confucius' eyebrows were like that, but the artwork just isn't consistent. The to-go box joke? I don't understand enough about to-go boxes, but maybe it is a jab at how you have to smack the boxes to get the food out in some cases? Like smacking Sun to put him back in line after he declared war on Confucius (hence Confucius' "Okay, I see. You want to make it like that?" line, which is also a sort of making food bar, I guess, to go with the to-go box line). Loved the breakdown, though. I learned something new! Keep up the great work!

On a bridge it’s written, “God is dead” Signed Nietzsche. Under it is written, “Nietzsche is dead” signed God! And yes, Nietzsche was critical of Nihilism. He believed in different values altogether.
I was told that he believed an inversion on it, basically "Don't despair because there is no meaning to existance, rejoice because you are not shackled by it. Embrace that freedom and become the superior man!" Thus Nihilism takes on a new meaning for him
Hey Knox, I don’t comment on videos too often. But I just want to thank you for the breakdowns you and the other reactors do. The 10 months or so I’ve been watching got me from not listening to hiphop at all to mostly listening to hiphop. I got to some of eminem’s songs because of a youtube recommended streak when I was looking for new music. At that point I hadn’t given hiphop/rap a shot yet, first of all because my friends didn’t like it and second because English isn’t my first language so the lyrics were hard to catch. Eminem’s godzilla had me looking up reactions, just because of the speed eminem was going at. From there I found out there was so much more to it than the speed. I learned about the actual lyrics, double entendres, new artists etc. I spoke decent English a year ago but these things still flew over my head, now after listening for 10 months I can catch not only the lyrics but also bars and double entendres (not all of them ofc). So Knox if you’re reading this, thank you for the videos, not only for letting me appreciate hiphop/rap but also for the enjoyment I’ve had and still have watching them. Keep doing what you’re doing. 👊
Well same in I had all but given up on hip hop about 2 years ago, and 6 months ago started to find some underground artists that were ok.. then.... KNOX! And bam! Today I have only listened to hip hop every day for months !

This may be a stretch, but the "Sun Tzu I'll be picking apart your Wu" could also reference, that the descendents of Sun Tzu formed the Kingdom of Wu during the Three Kingdoms period (and lost later to the Kingdom of Wei)
Actually, Sun Tzu is serving the king of Wu during Late Zhou Dynasty during the Spring an Autumn period, which I think the reference is on. In addition, Sun Tzu is not actually his actual name, his birth name was Sun WU (Sun being his family name). Tzu(or Zi as it is pronounced in Chinese) is an honorific, meaning master. In Zhou Dynasty, China runs on a feudal system where different kings/warlords pledge allegiance to the central government. This system eventually lead to a lengthy civil war (aka The Warring States), ending in 221 BC. The 3 Kingdoms’ Wu Kingdom (starts in 220 AD) almost 400 years later... The link to 3 Kingdoms would be a happy coincidence but the main focus here would be during Warring States period where Sun Tzu was from.
@@DarylHuangSG I also think that lao tzu is chinese roman for teacher, or it might just be the tzu part that refers to teacher in modern times. Kinda like how japanese say sensei.

Super appreciate your more in-depth understanding of Nietzsche. He's probably one of the most misunderstood philosophers out there, mostly due to his historical circumstances (and partially due to his style).
Yo I actually like watching your reactions because I learn something, instead of just other channels with 80% just "YO THAT WAS SICKKK" but you actually talk about the people and dissect the lyrics with a great background for it. Keep up the content, man.
Sun Tzu creeping around is like a reference to his teachings about "keep your friends close and your enemies closer", meaning you have to do a little bit of stalking. I could be wrong tho
As someone who made philosophy his life and living I am astonished about all the references you recognize. I have always found you intelligent, but you are also very smart and well-read. Very good and entertaining video!
Note: An ironic point here and slight mistake is Nietzsche didn't kill God, he remarked on the fact the West killed God ('God is dead, and we have killed him') and, partly, he is actually speaking about people like Voltaire himself (the French anti-theists/nihilists).
I don't think it was a mistake. ERB doesn't generally make mistakes like that. The line is, "You killed God, so I gotta ask/Did He die of shame when He made your moustache?" The second half of the line implies that God died of something other than direct action. The first half seemed more like an intentional misrepresentation.
Just found your channel and Im so happy to see someone not only talk about the beats but digs deep into each line WHILE knowing what the lines are referencing. Keep it up dude and honestly, pick any ERB and do that but if I had to suggest one? Zeus Vs Thor, another Lego one (if you haven't done so yet.).
The Tao of Pooh; written by Benjamin Hoff, back in 1982, has gone on to because a staple of Philosophy classes years after it was released. It still is used in colleges today. I've read this book, and it was a big influence on me.
This was really cool man, I appreciate your analysis, especially with your background. You remind me of the comments section of the original video, and like it, you fill us in on the things we miss. It’s a really, really dense rap with so many layers. It’s awesome. One of the things it seems no one talks about is how Confucius, not to buy into last line bias or anything, quotes his own meme at the end.
"So you better get your *guns out*" and "guess what? now the *sun's out*" There's another entendre you missed where Sun Tzu refers to the phrase "sun's out, guns out"
I have watched three of your videos now, and you are SO well rounded! You match and sometimes exceed my k owledge of history. Im very excited to see how this one turns out and will edit when i finish! Edit: "Rolling with the flyest nihilist" is awesome internal rhyme, lets not argue that much. Genuinely love this level of analysis! Saw the other ERB he reviewed too. Gotta say, it is extremely rare to see a reviewer with this level of understanding! Earned a sub, and definitely checking out future content, (Hopefully that includes more 2020 ERB videos, the old stuff is good too, but this last season was straight fire!)
This has been the only ERB reaction I've seen from anyone to both pick up on and really get every subtle little history nod and not just the obvious burns, and also get and understand what goes into the music side of it too. This was so much fun to watch! Subbed!
Yo Knox! I find it funny how you commented on the beatboxing so much. I actually really like the beatboxing community, and it's been getting a lot more love recently, so I just wanted to take this chance to possibly plant the idea in your mind of reacting to some beatboxing. There's a TON of underground talent in that community. The main channel I would check out for beatbox battles or showcases would be Swissbeatbox (that's like the main hub for beatboxing videos nowadays). Keep up the good work!
Yo Knox, you should start at the beginning of ERB and go in order. You're one of the few reactors who appreciate growth and evolution in hip hop, and seeing ERBs growth over the last 10 years is something I'd ♥ to see you comment on. The Coach Shaq was 💯 tho, no one comes close to the breakdowns you provide. Keep up the amazing work, both creating content and creating dope music!
Watched the whole video with a smile on my face, great stuff and honestly the best breakdown I've seen with lots of info and very well explained tidbits.
Yeah. I am really looking forward to more ERB from you: Jordan vs. Ali, Joker vs. Pennywise, Ghandi vs. Martin Luther King, ... They have so many good ones.
Yo man! One reference with the "move bitch, get out the way" could be in regards to "an immovable object." In this case, Lao would be the "unstoppable force." Not that I'm trying to look smart, that's just a guess lol. You got SO MUCH STUFF in here dude! You're so knowledgeable, i actually laughed in disbelief at one point xD
Another clever line with the "The suns out." Part of the book talks about the military tactic of attacking when the sun is in the eyes of your enemy. So when you have an encampment the best time to attack that place is sunrise, and sunset, from the angle where the sun would be at your back. Because the sun will be in your enemy's eyes.
The part where Confucius says “Okay, I see. You wanna make it like that?” I THINK is also a callback to a popular hip hop song from back in the early-ish 2000s. I have to admit though, the name just doesn’t come to mind.

Cool
That "method man" line is probaly the best line ERB have ever written.
Quandruple entendre there:
1. I'll tear apart your Wu -- Sun Wu is Sun Tzu's actual name, Tzu is a title
.
2. "Wu" is the Chinese concept of fighting spirit, so the line means "I'll break your spirit".
3. "I'll break apart your wu with my method" reference to the Socratic Method, systematically deconstructing an idea.
4. "Method, Man" obvious Wu Tang reference
5. "Woo" is a reference to mystical / magical thinking
@@beast_priest Ain't no fucking way 😐💀
maybe one more. wu man in reference to the story of sun tzu and the female soldiers?

Yea, Knox reacting to this particular battle would be a blessing
i feel like the "better men" bar could almost be heard as betterment, saying theyre more for improving upon themselves instead of trying to get others to improve from them.
Also might be about stereotypical racism from Western people towards eastern races...
So they're not saying "I'm better that you", but more "I'm always improving".
The "method, man" line is also a reference to the Socratic method
Yep and immediately after he ask a question
Experimental Method ?
Onyx Core- Scientific Method.
The "better men" line is also a direct reference to the Ubermensch theory by Nietzsche.

"Got you first" -Signed Nietzsche
I was told that he believed an inversion on it, basically "Don't despair because there is no meaning to existance, rejoice because you are not shackled by it. Embrace that freedom and become the superior man!" Thus Nihilism takes on a new meaning for him
@@sokuna2404 thats an existentialist take. Existence precedes essence, we come into the world then find meaning in defining ourselves in it.
Comments like this are exactly why I do what I do. Thank you so much for supporting my channel all this time. Much love 🙏🖤

Love this!! 💞💞💞💞💞
this battle has so many wonderful moments (even more than I thought, thanks to Knox's explanations), but my favorite will always be the 'WHAT IS WINNING?" at the end
At the end, ERB usually asks "who won?" but in this one, they asked "what is winning?" making it more philosophical
This may be a stretch, but the "Sun Tzu I'll be picking apart your Wu" could also reference, that the descendents of Sun Tzu formed the Kingdom of Wu during the Three Kingdoms period (and lost later to the Kingdom of Wei)
It's not a stretch at all, It's absolutely intended.
@@RS-fy9hb That is correct! Actually not sure why Confucius is named as such when we call him Kong Fu Zi (or Con Fu Tzu if you want to standardize the naming scheme :/)

Knox always has the most detailed breakdowns of ERB. I honestly don't know how he catches all these lines and can drop knowledge on every single bar.
And he didn't cut the clip one single time
He's not 'reacting'. He does research beforehand like all these 'reactors' then act like they just thought up every point.
@@t.yop9 You mean you think that's what he does. You have no proof.
@@t.yop9 Can you do that? Can you research a bunch of topics for a couple of hours and then spend 40+ mins organically associating all of it in conjunction with the beat and raps simultaneously?
Because whether he remembers it all or sets up shortly before release, it’s insanely impressive how well and organic these reactions are.
Socrates asking questions to help a person understand their position by making them explain is known as The Socratic Method. Which adds another layer to the "pick your Wu with my Method, Man" line. it's honestly amazing.

Note: An ironic point here and slight mistake is Nietzsche didn't kill God, he remarked on the fact the West killed God ('God is dead, and we have killed him') and, partly, he is actually speaking about people like Voltaire himself (the French anti-theists/nihilists).
I don't think it was a mistake. ERB doesn't generally make mistakes like that. The line is, "You killed God, so I gotta ask/Did He die of shame when He made your moustache?" The second half of the line implies that God died of something other than direct action. The first half seemed more like an intentional misrepresentation.
Sun Tzu line on "getting burned cos the sun's out" is also a reference of the Land of The Rising Sun
I think the book your thinking of is literally called "The Tao of Pooh"
KRNFX is actually well known for his beatboxing so they threw that in there when Confucius was going off
Was not expecting to leave here with a philosophy degree
"So you better get your *guns out*" and "guess what? now the *sun's out*"
There's another entendre you missed where Sun Tzu refers to the phrase "sun's out, guns out"
I have watched three of your videos now, and you are SO well rounded! You match and sometimes exceed my k owledge of history. Im very excited to see how this one turns out and will edit when i finish!

This has been the only ERB reaction I've seen from anyone to both pick up on and really get every subtle little history nod and not just the obvious burns, and also get and understand what goes into the music side of it too. This was so much fun to watch! Subbed!
So I found out that Confucius' line calling Voltaire a "French Drip" might be a jab at his love of coffee. French Drip is a way to prepare coffee.

Yo Knox! I find it funny how you commented on the beatboxing so much. I actually really like the beatboxing community, and it's been getting a lot more love recently, so I just wanted to take this chance to possibly plant the idea in your mind of reacting to some beatboxing. Yo Knox, you should start at the beginning of ERB and go in order. You're one of the few reactors who appreciate growth and evolution in hip hop, and seeing ERBs growth over the last 10 years is something I'd ♥ to see you comment on.
