Summary for self: 1. It's much harder to do than to plan 2. Identify the most important goal, and focus on it first 3. Avoid distractions by setting your environment 4. Keeping score of your work. Hours work, results, actions done 5. Review and identify lag/lead measure. Lag = the result-oriented goals you were aiming for, Lead = the action that help you achieved those results. 6. Take accountability = do weekly review to see what you did, and how you could improve. Peer review may also help
Reading the negative amazon reviews of this book, the main gripe people have is that Newport works on academia, where he has a lot of flexibility to isolate himself and do "deep work." A busy mid level executive that has meetings, reports to review and sign, and other tasks does not have the luxury to do these things. Even a software developer, who can benefit the most from this, may run into these issues.
A really amazing book which you summarized masterfully. I had it on my list for an animation but I think I will skip it since your video covers most of the angles. Well done!
Hey, I think your doing a really great job. Not only do I watch your videos but I also make notes from them in a notebook. I'm really grateful this channel exists.
I just started my deep work routine and I noticed I can only do 1.5 to 2 hours of deep work before I get mentally fatigued. I hope reaching 4 straight hours is attainable for me :\
I spent way too much time thinking about EVERYTHING I need to do, so I finally bought a white board and that's been game changing. Write down your To Do's and erase when complete :)
The only things I've heard are things like a stint of afternoon/evening exercise or nutritious food to recharge your Executive Functioning or maybe other recharging activities, PLENTY of sleep every night, or changing your whole schedule so the side projects you're most passionate about and need the most executive functioning for are done in the super early hours before work and then your dayjob is what you're doing while more depleted.
yeah schedule internet time but what if you need it CONSTANTLY for your deep work? thats impossible... you went over it as if it was not a big deal, but it IS!
Yeah that's pretty relatable actually too... It can be because of decreased distractions, because of lowered inhibitions while somewhat tired fueling creativity, because you didn't use up your EF earlier, i mean there is Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder and I don't know what it means fully when it comes to functioning etc but also if you're sleeping all day and getting enough rest it's mostly just like you live in a different time zone and the night is your morning... Lol
That part of the video was probably the most mind blowing suggestion to me because I've heard a lot of the other things but not every single day as a habit deleting and cleaning up the downloads folder, closing tabs, etc.

I still don't understand that lag/lead measure.
Thanks.
06:04 I love how at the end of each of these types of videos, u zoom out, to show the incredible drawings u did, to create this video. Great job.
🤯The biggest takeaway for me is To focus on behaviors rather than goals. What a great video🎬, too many applicable stuff here🙌🏻. Thank you!
Maybe what this means is to set goals that have to do with behavior! Just thinking out loud.
*Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one!*
*Bruce Lee :)*
Bruce Lee the greatest mind of our time
It's too bad Bruce Lee died young and never "endured" a difficult life.
This is so fucked up. Imagine that we built a world where our lives are meant to be difficult. WTF is wrong with yall, how can u accept that ?

Everything is just a skill and the better we develop our skills, the more successful we will be in life.
This series is a gem! Im Lucky that I found it.
I really needed this because I’m trying to work the most productively this semester. Last semester I did better and it felt great
The ability to do deep work is a important productivity skill to master if you are low on time
I bet it would be valuable to rewatch through from step 1 a few times to really get the good stuff to stick.
Agreed.
Thank you very much for your summary! It's wonderful and useful for me!

Man take my advice and organize your videos by creating playlists
Love your vids. Are the charts you make available for downloading and printing for the office?

Got any tips on working a full day of work, then get home and still work on meaningful side projects?
Just do it

how about nocturnal people like me? I usually do deepwork at midnight till morning...

I think notifications comes from the original latin word that means distractions!
