Yeah same, I tried to only concentrate on the video, but my brain just fly away to some random thoughts. I lost control of my brain long time ago, but I am willing to take it back
1. Set a certain time for deep work every day - The best way to make work less exhausting is to make it a habit. Set an extended time to do your work and get rid of any distractions. - Cal Newport, the author of Deep Work, suggests doing deep work first in the morning, from 9 a.m. to midday. That’s when your mind functions the best. - When you first start, don’t worry if you can only do about 20 - 30 minutes. With enough practice, you will be able to extend it to a few hours, but not more than 4. Research shows that a human’s brain can’t focus for more than 4 hours at a time. 2. Have a shutdown ritual - Ways to unplug: - Take a nap - Meditate - Take a walk in nature - Don't scroll through social media during the break. This is like you would slow down and take a rest instead of doing burpees during a marathon race to run farther. 3. Have a rule of being distracted - Set a certain for distracting activities like checking emails, scrolling social media, etc. It’s better to do these activities after deep work. 4. Take care of your body - Sleep for at least 7 hours a day. Those who don’t have enough sleep have a worse performance during the day. - Exercise. Our brains become more plastic and perform better when we exercise. Also, your short-term memory functions at its peak up to 3 - 4 hours after exercising. - Stay hydrated. Keep a water bottle by your side while engaging in deep work. - Eat healthily. 5. The Pomodoro Technique - Work for 25 minutes without interruption. - Take a rest for 5 minutes. - Repeat the cycle 4 times then take a long break
" I don't care how much power, brilliance, or energy you have, if you don't harness it and focus it on a specific target, and hold it there you're never going to accomplish as much as your ability warrants." - Zig Ziglar
1. Work on single task for long periods of times without distractions 2. Set a certain time each day 3. Destimulate your day in one day 4. Rules for focus time - all distractions 5. Body - exercise, sleep, hydrate, diet 6. Pomodoro
This is so true and so important. I can say from experience that deep work really works and that working in a distracted state is extremely counterproductive and the same for multitasking.
To me, focus is almost everything now. Whether in work, studies or care for self and loved ones, focus is a skill that allows to understand, process and enjoy all so much better.

Thanks for this video. I feel that Multi-Tasking is over-rated. Focusing on one thing and getting It done is way better than scattering your brain all over the place!
I agree wholeheartedly. Over the years, I've mastered the skill of multi-tasking, because that's what employers seem to want in an employee, but I've noticed that the real jobs get done when you can focus on one task, without distraction, until completion. I'm now learning to do that better. I'm finally trying to write (something I've always wanted to do), and I'm finding that I need this skill more than ever.
What people perceive as multi-tasking is actually focused work on one thing followed by focused work on other thing and so on, while that first thing is not getting out of hand. True multi-tasking doesn't exist. Trying to do a bunch of things at once is not multi-tasking, it's overcinfidence at best and stupidity at worst.
The pomodoro technique really works for me. Each half hour I walk for five minutes, in my house, going back and forth in a long room at the end of the house. I’m studying math and physics and when I start walking, I'm still engrossed with what I’m studying and often have insights during this walk time that don’t happen while I’m sitting at my desk. It’s amazing!
Honestly, I think that focus is largely a result the way that you feel about yourself and the way that you feel emotionally about the possibilities for yourself, which is often the byproduct of childhood relationships, as well inspiration. I think that focus starts with dealing with those things.
I has adhd. I listened. I prepped a conversation about this with my therapist and friend. Finished working on this task for my job, and fell asleep for less than a second four times. Now I am finished and writing this comment.
So many good points which appear fundamental on the surface, yet so elusive to achieve in today's world. Thank you for the new video! Bravo, Art of Improvement!!
This is great, thank you. Focus is a key! People tell me “yeah but it’s easy for you…” Hahahahahaha. You have to start somewhere…what’s helped me is my Bible study because it’s serious and my life depends on what I’m reading snd applying. We (JW.org) have a structured schedule and it’s based on focus! It’s so helpful. I didn’t realize just how many (beside the spiritual aspect) ancillary things, like focus, are also being achieved. The Scriptures are full of reminders about meaningful focus, goals, and actions. One thought: Being a dynamic learner may look scattered but it’s possible that you’re making other important connections while you’re working. In my case, one thing always reminds me of something else and often something completely different. Instead of letting it sideline me, I write it down so that valuable information is not lost. I enjoy your videos so much, thanks again
Being a dynamic thinker is special. It requires focus but also fluidity. I’ve always thought about many things at once and was told that was a problem. I was told “stay on the subject” IIn keeping only strict focus, the dynamic part is shut down. Sometimes this is necessary but at other times we many be shooting ourselves in the foot. In addition to focus, we need to think and learn and reason, which in the end, is making connections. They all go together and focus is a vital part of the pie. Taking breaks is just as important as focus because we also need time to meditate on the information , to be able to make the necessary connections, to be able use it wisely. Knowledge is not power, wisdom is power: the proper application of knowledge.
I once told an incredible intelligent young lawyer how lucky he was to have such a brilliant brain, he looked at me and said you can also be as good as I'm because I'm not smarter than you. Perhaps I'm just more disciplined and focused that's all. Now I understand what he really meant at that time!
