    I hope FreeCAD starts really making progress. I am getting tired of running Fusion 360 in a virtual machine on Linux. It will be nice to finally be completely done with Windows.
    It would be amazing if FreeCAD would at least let me use right click to rotate instead of right click being useless.
    Edit: TinkerCAD Navigation was added in 0.20 release. Finally, I am so hype about this. Could not get used to "Normal" CAD navigation.

    it'll be interesting to go through the 1.0 tutorials once the future arrives... currently I'm getting around pretty decently in the sketcher/part design/part work benches. I've been working on my own designs in freecad for several months now, and can confidently say I'm past the headache of not being able to figure out where you paint yourself into a corner with constraints, over constraining models with no hint as to why, etc. basically pretty comfortable with the basics and getting my parts set up in assemblies to continue iterating. That being said, most of what I'm doing is glorified drafting, as 99% of what I'm making is just profiles for an endmill router and I simply extrude the part to the desired material thickness. Where I'm really struggling to find a good tutorial would be on the curves work bench and more complex tasks. I know MangoJelly has a long playlist just on the curves wb alone, but honestly can't sit through 10-20 hours of youtube just to learn the one bit I need at the time of inspiration to create the thing lol .

    Currently updating FreeCAD to 0.2 to see if it's actually any better. I tend to spend most of my time in the PartDesign workbench and in the past it has proven to be a horrible, unreliable mess by crashing seemingly at random when wanting to do simple things like add chamfers, fillets or sketches. Restart and repeat the operation... and it works? Too many times I've lost work, very frustrating.
    CAD Sketcher for Blender seems interesting, must check that out!

    • @tim1398
      @tim1398 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      FreeCAD devs are quick to point out the chamfer and fillets (and thickness too) are not part of the FreeCAD code but rather the underlying OpenCASCADE 3D engine. And that the OC devs are not wanting to fix the issues unless a case can be created from the OC framework that replicates the issues from FreeCAD. But it *is* buggy and slow and annoying as heck.

    I have to say that I was pretty shocked when I learned that the bug was to be still included in 0.20. On the other hand the developers have been forthcoming with the news that the "problem fix" was not part of the plan for 0.20. Thanks to Maker Tales and Real Thunder for keeping this on the radar. The attitude has really shifted from the "blame the user", "no one knows what they are doing", "its a feature not a bug" attitude to just putting this on the long term fix plan and calling it the bug it always was. I'm excited, but tentative, to see 1.0 and the real fixes. I'm even more excited to see your series on it.

    Why always a clickbait title when it comes to Freecad? It's the first thing viewers read and it scares them away from the Freecad project. And opensource projects need a good community to grow. It makes me wonder if the title for a huge problem in CadSketcher will get the same sort of title and video or if it will be more nuanced.

    • @v4lgrind
      @v4lgrind ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Because FreeCAD has until now been one of the most dissapointingly broken open source projects out there. It’s current community has litterally scared people away for years. The title of the video is the correct one, it was the only question that needed to be answered.

    • @Drew_pew_pew_pew
      @Drew_pew_pew_pew ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@v4lgrind Title could have easily been: Does Freecad 0.20 still have a TPN problem? It's the same question but without the !?! at the end. For me fundamentally broken means you can not do anything with it and the many successful projects of users show it's possible to make something incredible. It has a problem, a big one but not broken. Generalising the community is also wrong, because for every toxic comment on the forum (even from the developers), there's somebody else trying to do the opposite. My interactions with Realthunder, MangoJellySolutions and OficineRobotica where all very pleasant. And all the questions I asked where rookie questions. Everybody following freecad knows that the TPN problem results in heated debates, again and again and the title is deliberately made to trigger those users because it creates more traffic to the channel. You could easily make the same clickbait titles for other software (and I support all of them) like: 'Does blender need parametric modeling!?!' 'CadSketcer, (un)successful attempt to bringing cad to Blender!?! 'Is CadSketcher worth your time!?! It's feeding on the problems and the hate within an open source project and that's just sad and bad practice.

      @adaycj ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Drew_pew_pew_pew You just brought your pre-conceived notions and drama to this video's comments. There is no hate surrounding TNP, it just needs to get fixed. I for one am happy that Maker Tales and RealThunder have highlighted this issue and are illustrating a way forward. Burying and ignoring the problem while blaming users is the drama that is now over. We are all looking forward to the future, and you are complaining about an accurate video with an accurate title. FreeCAD 0.20 is still fundamentally broken, and it will be until TNP is properly fixed.

    • @Drew_pew_pew_pew
      @Drew_pew_pew_pew ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@adaycj There's a consensus TPN is a huge problem that should be addressed (and the sooner the better), there isn't one about if this makes Freecad by definition fundamentally broken. It's Maker tales and your right to have this opinion and I can follow it to a great extend but the title leaves no room to interpret it this way. On the contrary it's phrased as a proven fact. What you call drama I call a minimum of having empathy. I fail to see how the title 'Freecad is fundamentally broken' will ever attract new users, nore do I see how this will motivate freecad developpers to put extra of their spare time and effort in the project. Both are necessary if you want freecad ever to succeed. I have no problem with the content of this video, just the title. And when you look at all the other videos talking about tpn it's the only one formulated this way. It's naïve to think content creators do not actively optimise the title to get more views.

    • @MultiMeschi
      @MultiMeschi ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Drew_pew_pew_pew Yeah, but it's better to clearly call out the problems that exist instead of telling everybody how nice FreeCAD is. For FreeCAD it's better that professional users get a clear view about the capabilities of the program instead of getting deceived into trying it, wasting their time and ending up using something different anyways. The reason Blender disrupted everything is, that it's innovative and rock solid. FreeCAD can get there too, but only by rigorously eliminating the deficits.

      The realthunder algo is very far reaching and goes deep into the legacy code base. Freecad is very stable and those kinds of changes require a lot of planning and careful (ie slow) code review. It's being broken down into smaller logical chunks for quality control and careful bug testing.
      Overall, I expect this process will actually strengthen the topology code quite a bit. I no longer have problems with topology, but I'm excited for the change anyway.

      Perhaps the message was blunt, but if you're running into TNP. It's highly likely that you weren't following good CAD design practices. Some other software allows you to model 'quick and dirty' but eventually will break. Good design practices don't really make modeling more time consuming either (seriously). I spend way more time thinking about my designs as I like to "design as I go".

  • @AlexandreCarri
    @AlexandreCarri ปีที่แล้ว +5

    TNP is not that big of a deal, honestly. But It's a bit hard at the start. I use a lot of absolute position workplanes, and they end up making the model very stable. But sometimes you have to do a few extra steps.
    But hey, it's free. The goal is not to beat F360, it's to have a software that is usable by anyone that wants to do CAD without making users pirate software or be restricted by free licenses. I know you want to do the free course when version 1.0 is out, but I think you can also teach people to avoid TNP :)

      @@Pulsar2000 And that's exactly the problem. FreeCAD is never going to get off the ground, unless it gains widespread popularity among hobbyists. Most of which aren't professionals, in fact most are at the beginner-level or just above that. You can make the case, that in order to use FreeCAD properly you have to learn proper CAD-modelling. But then FreeCAD better have good documentation or better yet plenty of high quality tutorials on youtube...and it doesn't.
      The number of good tutorials has definitely increased these last few years but FreeCAD has been in the making for over 20 years now...
      It's 2024 and FreeCAD is still almost exclusively used by people who feel strongly about using open source software. No one uses FreeCAD because it's doing things better than popular CAD-programs like SolidWorks, Fusion360 or Onshape. People now even go out of their way now to make Blender, a 3D-modelling program meant for 3D-artists, into a CAD-alternative. That tells you a lot about the disastrous state FreeCAD is in.

  • @cekuhnen

    Was it ever broken ? Freecad is a collection of tools.
    By nature this makes unifying the experience and workflow nearly impossible as a FOSS project
    I tested it over month doe architecture interior and furniture / product design
    If what you want to build freecad can so then it is a pretty good platform but most times it missed crucial features and is just too much of a mixed back

    There is no cad system that "solved" the topological naming problem. The so-called "solution" literally requires human mind reading. The software has to figure out the user's intent from the actual changes. Is it possible? In general no. CAD softwares are trying hard but sometimes the most advanced software wreck your model when you make changes in the model tree. Pro users use pro software without relying on topological naming, in freecad it is a must. Does this make it fundamentally broken? I don't think so. Would it be more user-friendly with it? It is still not a resounding yes. Why? When the model crash because you blindly relied on the software and you are a beginner you are helplessly lost and that is worse than a steeper learning curve at least this is my opinion.
