      He lives in the three-quarter sphere shelf Uzav-Kugra, facing the lobby of the sleeping peoples of the solar system, because there is a planet there he highly suspects he came from. "Earth" it is called. The humans who live there never stop painting. Their paintings carry so many different meanings, love, memory, and a fight against mortality - a fear he can barely remember.
      Their paintings are only slightly less temporary than their lives! A well-kept painting six hundred years old sometimes feels as rare as a sunflower grown six meters high. But he does what he can. At first he asked the sauntings of the ivory fleet to capture max-resolution matterfields of the threatened paintings of the earth humans. The results of those scans appeared in his cargo room each morning, atom-for-atom recreations made to meet his immense need for authenticity as well as a copy ever can, for he is no liar and no thief.
      He works as he lives, carefully, gently, thoughtfully, patiently. And when he is finished, the original is replaced with an atom-for-atom copy of his restored version. Sometimes he restores forgotten paintings with no one to care for them. also, paintings left to crumble in attics by careless owners he will sometimes repair without consent, in the hopes that their children will one day appreciate that painting. But thankless work was not enough for him, and he also wanted to repair loved paintings, and positively impact lives of their admirers with his literally superhuman skills. So he created a company to form customer relationships to this end. It's called Baumgartner Restorations, founded and operated by a convincing android avatar that set him back a few billion credits - a small price for his cause.
      It was only 2011 when he upgraded the android's control unit to a Q-band neural integrator, and began his life among humans through it. Now he works on paintings in person, and can touch the same material that was painted hundreds of years ago. Even though the infallible scans were never a threat to anyone's enjoyment of the paintings, and no difference could be seen or felt or even tasted, he now prefers for the original to live on in its purest form, and works to this end, never creating matterfield copies while working anymore. He doesn't even rely on backup matterfields to let himself work with less fear of mistakes. He is truthful, even when he could lie without the faintest chance of being detected. That's how many spectators from beyond that star system came to an odd agreement - to call an ancient inhuman mind in a mechanical body "the most honest human."

    • @arden6609
      @arden6609 5 ปีที่แล้ว +780

      The Mona Lisa cannot currently be restored. Da Vinci’s technique for painting her makes it physically impossible to strip the varnish without removing the top layers of paint themselves. It is believed that he adjusted her so many times that there are hundreds of layers of varnish and paint on the canvas.

      This. I don't varnish my paintings because I haven't found one that doesn't oversaturate the living hell out of my work. It feels plastic instead of soft and touchable. Like people who see my stuff reach out to touch it. I want them to keep doing that. So if some asshole varnished my pieces...and then let them get dirty as shit, I'm going to haunt their stupid ass for wreaking my painting and praising the dirt on it like dirt has more value than the work I put in.

      I can't imagine if someone varnished my unvarnished pieces (they're supposed to soft and almost touchable FFS) and then after the varnish yellowed and got all ugly went 'its supposed to be gnarly like that'. Like no.
      Varnish puts a barrier between the viewer and your paint. You varnish my shit over my dead body. Now admittedly...they're going to get dirty and so forth, but cleaning wise I'd want them to remain soft and absorbing, not shiny and oversaturated.

    This video as well as some others you've done conclusively settles the argument over whether to remove old discolored varnish or leave it on, for me. These two sisters' faces communicate very little emotional content when they're covered by the old varnish. But when they're cleaned, their expressions are revealed in all their complexity, and the emotion shines through. I cannot envision a painter that would prefer the muddy, dingy painting you started with..

It was amazing to see half of ceiling looking the way we all have perceived it through the years and the other half of what it must have looked like when it was new. You're work reminds me of that. Found the painting description on an auction site. “ Early American 19th C Portrait Painting of Twin Girls in Matching Red Dresses. Oil on board. Housed in an antique gold leaf frame. This painting has been in the same Connecticut family since the early 1950s when it was purchased at an estate auction in Millerton, New York in Dutchess County along with the Tiffany & Co sterling silver sold in our October 9th auction. Research and comparison to known works has suggested this painting could be the work of Ammi Phillips (April 24, 1788 - July 11, 1865) who was very active in the area having lived in the Dutchess County town of Rhinebeck, New York. Additional images and video are available by email request. Painting itself measures 21 x 29 inches, frame measures 27 x 35.5 inches.”

    I'm really enjoying watching your restoration videos. As an artist, I have to agree with your sentiment about removing the discolored, aged varnish. Had the original artist wanted the painting to be that way, they would have painted it that way in the first place. I bet if they could see their works coming back to their full, vivid color again, they'd be very happy and would be thanking you. I think the people who like the patina are the ones who are more focused on the value of preservation, meaning the painting hasn't been meddled with in any way, and sure, perhaps there's value to a painting like that, but it does the original art no justice.

    Varnish is a thing they often did replace pretty frequently, as a part of the mainteance of the paintings so removing it is not a big deal as said since it most likly has allredy been done several times on old paintings.
    (i accidentally deletd half of this post, was i wrote here was this, if one want to do that "at home" on a less valuable painting, it's extremly importatnt to NEVER EVER use chemicals that contain mineral based oils/petroleum products or any sort of plastic. because mineral based oils will slovly destroy both paintings and also textiles and wood, like old wooden furniture ower time, plastic will trap moisture and ower time create a perfect home for fungis and bacterias wich will also slowly break down the surface ower time beside the fact that most types of plastic are it self bad for the substrate, NEVER EVER use plastic paint or syntetic oils on valuable old furniture.)

    • @sheep1ewe
      @sheep1ewe 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just a word of warning if a non professional want to try it on a less valuable painting, sometimes parts of the shading is done with the same materials as the varnish and not with oilpaint as the rest of the picture so one need to be careful to not remove those layers if it's the case.

    besides the dirt, the painting is in really great shape... must have been pretty easy to finish comparing it to other paintings that are in real bad shape.
    loved the video and I'm happy you had a painting to rest a little since you didn't have to scrape or repaint.

    Resembles a still image from a nineteenth-century version of "The Shining".

    I love watching these videos. This one in particular was sooo satisfying to watch. I'm curious about how you entered this field - it would be cool if you were able to make a Q&A video!

    I would also like it if you did a video on what college courses and training you have been through. I watch these with my children as a way to expose them to the many different things that one can choose to do with their lives and a list of the courses and training would greatly help them see what they would have to do if they found a passion for restoring art...

    6:56.... when this eye becomes alive...!
    It must be amazing to rediscover the original colors of a painting, , even after years of experiencing renovations!

    This is a darling little painting! I love those little girls. I can’t help but imagine how difficult it must have been for them to maintain a solemn look. You know little girls of that age are gigglers. Lol
