- In this video Julian Baumgartner of Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration in Chicago walks the viewer through the process of retouching a large loss on a mid-19th century portrait of a gentleman.
While not meant to be instructional, the narration provides insight into the process of color mixing, addresses some of the technical questions that come up when retouching such a large loss and outlines some of the materials used.

I love his videos but I didn't like the eye.
Maybe I am wrong but I think it looks a bit off.
I think for me it is just a bit too big , the angle does not fit perfectly (should be a bit angled upwards) the shape does not match completely the way I was expecting (almond shape).
On the other hand a good bit of the original eye was sill left and that part was obviously correct. So maybe the original painter did not nail it perfectly or the subject painted had just an unsymmetrical face which is probably true.
The shape though in my uneducated opinion is not completely how I would have expected it.
Maybe he is correct though and I am wrong. That could very well be the case.

It can be everything. Take a photo of someone under water. They look as dead and fake as if they had been floating there for hours, just because the eyes don't shine anymore
As a doll-repainter I can guarantee you that dolls look dead and like plain dolls unless you add eye-shine,it's litteraly the best thing to do when you feel like the eyes are emotionless and plain

@@johnopalko5223 Hi! I've never heard it called "catch-light" before, but I'm not an artist and am not familiar with art terminology. I come from a hard-science background, so I went with the technical term. Like you, I almost held my breath waiting for him to add the "catch-light." It seemed like he waited to the very last second.

@@BaumgartnerRestoration I think the eye looks great honestly - after a certain point in the video it just kind of disappeared into the rest of the painting and I stopped seeing it as a new addition. Incredible stuff. :)
@@BaumgartnerRestoration The eye really did look wonderful. As you were building it up, it really took on the "feel" of the other eye.. it quickly became a set of eyes showing the same feeling and depth, I thought.

I'm from Chicago born to a Swiss father and American mother. I've been doing this since I was very young and though I may look Italian, I assure you the depth of my Italian is very shallow.
Anna McCormack his website says he apprenticed in his father’s studio and later took it over; he started very young.
I kind of get where you're coming from. He looks like an Italian in his twenties but he's neither Italian nor in his twenties. 😂😂😂😂
The only thing we know is that he's awesome in what he does.
if you focus solely on the new eye, you see its off but not by much...., but if you focus on the painting as a whole...its damn near a perfect match. and the only thing that puts it off for me, is how new the paint looks to the rest of the painting,..exactly what he was going for....you see the whole, and not just the parts that were damaged. AND THAT WAS A fudge ton of damage.
Yeah, the eye bugs me. I've seen worse, but some of this guy's future work is a lot better.
The thing is, the eye from the previous restoration looked much better than the one he made, he could have referenced that but he seems to let his ego get in the way and not follow what other restorators did before him.

@@tommywiseauconfit The picture had a previous restoration, the previous restorer did a better job reconstructing the eye, but he refused to use that as reference and instead drew a pretty poor symbol eye, when he could have rebuilt what the previous restorer did.

The other eye was already dont for him, He just had to follow on, Just like How TH-cam drawing tutorials go to fast for you, and by the time you’ve drawn the outline, the tutorial has already finished

Since this is a period painting. he would be using the "classic" paint colors used at the time: that would be alizarin crimson, titanium white, yellow ochre, ultramarine blue, burnt umber, burnt sienna, and ivory black. You can mix virtually every color you need from those.

@@IvanSN Probably because the colors Bob Ross used are very common. Like, they're standard paint colors. Go to any art shop, look for oil or acrylic paints, you'll see all those names. Cadmium yellow, ultramarine blue, yellow ochre, whatever.

Do you mean Leonardo's Salvator Mundi? It was restored by an Old Master specialist in New York. It was also authenticated by her. It took years to restore it.

A lot of the criticisms are based on the assumption that eyes are symmetrical but that rarely happens ifl.

Your comment about the dog sniffing the chocolate chip cookie and how you see both the finished color and the component parts was fascinating and makes total sense. It reminds me of how musicians hear music - we hear both the entire piece and the individual parts simultaneously. Great video and insight as usual!
I fell asleep to this last night and dreamt I was restoring it and telling a coworker that it didn’t need a lining canvas and how it would take away from the original piece

@@TorneraFoda That's not how that works. You wouldn't say "chefs are useless because anyone can learn how to cook." If think you need to have a degree or work for a news publication or what have you to criticize something or culinary schooling to even say "I'm good at cooking", you're coming out of left field. I'm not sure why it's such a foreign concept for a non-artist to be able to look at an artist's work and think "This looks off." As I've explained elsewhere, it doesn't take being a chef to be able to judge food. Sure, a chef might be able to tell what exactly needs fixing and can describe the texture and hints of the food in detail, but your average layman can say "This is way too salty."

So I can kiiiiiinda see why there was some hoopla about the eye...the original looks slightly more round in it's base shape while yours came out looking more almond-shaped... but I mean honestly given you were coming at this with zero references it looks damn good. And the shape of the eye won't always look how it should depending on the angle, so I can see the reasoning why you went the direction you did. It looks freaking amazing either way, so kudos once again for another outstanding restoration \o/
thats what I was thinking about; the issue is that the face wasn't head on, and eye shapes vary depending on angles and how much a particular person's eyeball just sticks out... painting restorations are so wild, especially considering there was no reference to look at besides the other half of the painting!
Its to far from the nose , the other eye sits closer and darker+slightly smaller..

I agree the shape of the eye is off. Being great at art restoration doesn’t make a great artist. I believe you did your best with the skills you have. But overall great job.
Yeah i totally agree the shape of the eye is too long with less depth then the other, but seeing as he had no reference he did an amazing job for a recreation

I can see how people might not like how the new eye looks. However; the longer you stare at it, the more I see why you did what you did. Initially it looks about 1 mm to big, but you have to take into account the whole picture. I love it!!!

Actually, the eye looks good,but it's a problem with eyebrow. Just think about perspective in this painting.
For me, it was the eyelid. I feel like it needed a little more shadow to define it. But hey, I’m no artist 🤷🏻♂️
I think its the color the one he did looks a little lighter. But then again that coukd be the lighting and it doesn't really matter what i think 😂
I thought the eye was beautiful it was the sideburn that was making me crazy the OG is textured and the one he did looks blurry that can't be an easy job. He does the best work I've seen.
You need to advertise on the ASMR channels. You’d pick up a lot of extra $$.
Can you name 3 reputable, commercial art conservators within 250 miles of where you live? I doubt it. The good ones don't need to advertise. A yellow pages listing and a minimalist webpage are sufficient. Also, advertising would actually hurt his efficiency. His clients are willing to spend hundreds and thousands of dollars on art restoration. He doesn't want 30 phone calls a day from people kicking tires to see what they can get for $150.

You definitely have skills! It is not easy matching someone else's style, technique and color palate. I also thought the eye looked a bit off, until the painting was varnished. For me, it was the lack of shine that made the left eye look dull. Thanks for sharing. What people can do . . .
I think the other eye was also set in further. I know the angle accounts for some of the shadow but it just is a but off.

maybe its because my eyes kinda have the same bulbous classical shape, but in my interpretation the eye would have been slightly more bulbous in the inner upper corner for that big wow round eye look that i associate with that era of painting and my eyes, so i think when you're trying to translate the eye around a curve it also depends a lot on what you've seen before, and what you're expecting
The non-mimetic technique is called "rigatino" if it's made by little line aside another (riga= line and rigato= lined, striped, so rigatino could be translated as stripedly) or "puntinato" if made by little dots. Nice video!

@@BaumgartnerRestoration Tratteggio can be a more generic name for rigatino, but it is usually used for any kind of hatching, especially in pensil drawings for shadowing (tratteggio incrociato = cross-hatching). Peace out man! Keep it up!
Conservation paint being removable is brilliant because it solves every artist's existential crisis of going back to their work and saying "nah I hate it now"

@Jason Voorhees what do you mean?
He has referred to that once or twice and has had to go back and undo adjustments he has made at times. Would like to hear more about his own experiences with over or incorrectly painting . Most of his techniques are reversible and it is up to the client to decide whether they are satisfied with the job he does.
From my perspective, he seems to do his best to make minimal adjustments to the paintings as possible. Again, all based on my perspective.
I watched the full version of this restoration and it's absolutely amazing to watch and I couldn't believe when it was done, the damage was completely invisible. Such remarkable talent. The hell with other people's opinions! ! I'd like to see them do this. And yes your clients opinion is all that matters

I was feeling the eye looked a bit brighter but the end result ended up being perfect.
I loved that he wrote “eyedeally” in the subtitles while he was painting the eye
At first I agreed with other commenters that the eye was a little off, but by the end, Julian's skill was evident seeing the little lift in the eyebrow opening the eye subtly. Not to mention that as incongruent as we are as humans that this gives a real lifelike appearance. Well done.

this was the first video of julien's i had watched, and then in january i got in a car accident and was home bound, and my mother decided we were going to start water coloring and let me tell you, after learning the basics of an art or any kind of painting, you really realize how much julien does. watching this the first time i thought what he did was a little extra, and now? in short i really appreciate all the work he puts into each one of his restorations.
I saw the whole process of the eye being rebuilt, then I blinked, and it became part of the painting.
I can't believe how amazing that eye came out. He was working with so little yet it looks perfect.

If the new eye and that side of the face, which were essentially gone, don't match the other side of the face, they don't and shouldn't match. Photography has proven that the human face differs subtly from one side to the other and if, shown by flipping one side to the other so as to match, it's quite disconcerting and not preferable to the natural differences. This restoration is proof that our imperfections are what makes us unique and ultimately human. Julien, please keep your narrated restorations coming! It's just about the best thing on YT😎

The blue of the computer screen (or laptop or iPad, tablet, phone, etc) emits something that interrupts the brain through the eyes and interferes with your sleep.
If you're like me you need sound to sleep or your brain won't shut up. Try an OTR (old time radio) show, like Sherlock Holmes or Suspense or the like, and turn off the screen and listen to it with your eyes closed.
You might also try turning off the screen and listening to a video.
If you try it, I hope it helps!

Wow. I was skeptical in the beginning of the painting of the eye, it didn't seem possible to get it right with all of that damage. Then I saw the finished area. Amazing.
I always enjoy wathing these. Guess it’s something about watching a professional at work, someone who has learned a trade to their fingetips and are good at it. Plus it’s amazing to see what you’re able to do! :D

Julian, each deconstruction has been almost more engaging to watch than the intricate repairs that you perform afterward, yet they are two parts of each healing. Obviously, you have lived much of your life serving countless artists who created each piece brought to your attention. The November 5, 2018 restoration of the unnamed painting with the 19th Century man missing the left half of his face shown in the video was brilliant! His left eye was in complete and humorous harmony with his right one; his auburn sideburns seemed crisp and newly trimmed. He appeared ready to slap a top hat on his head and leave for an important engagement on the Strand (or Central Park). Bravo for the gifts that you give in each meticulous healing performed on your stationary clients and to those living ones who wait to take them home again. Many cheers!
You explain your process so well! And I agree about the color mixing -- I only have red, blue, yellow, black, and white paint on hand. There's so much more freedom in determining what colors you end up with. :)

Watching you do the eye was fasinating, through out the most of it I was like "that doesn't quite match" and then as you finished the last details it sudden came together and the accuracy surprised me
The more I watch and rewatch these videos the more I consider making this my career
I love how all these viewers who have never picked up a brush are so quick to judge such immense skill. Anyone who experiences a painting be so heavily damaged, and then witness it returned to it's original grestness knows how incredible you have done.
@@Drikkerbadevand okay. Imma getting a little tired of seeing this point. The point he made in the video was "If your not the one that hired me, I aint gonna listen to your ass." which is a really good statement. If I am a artist who created a commission piece for some one, the only person who opinion matters is the commissioner. If a random commenter decided to give a critique, he can, but it really doesn't matter what he says cause the one who allows me to eat liked it. Should I take his criticism? Maybe, but that person probably isn't a consumer so why should I care if I don't need his business?
It is probably not at its original greatness and it could never be again, for no fault of restorer. There were already a number of oddities in the prior alteration and no matter the choices made, it wouldn't have looked right to everybody.

The intersection of skills required to be successful in this craft boggles my mind. And not just the hard skills-chemistry, art history, art-but also the soft skills-dealing with clients, patience, humility, confidence.

In the final piece the eye looks fine, if you take into account the perspective of a camera and the position of the intended object to be photographed the same can be said for the painting, his seating position and the angle of his head could cause one eye to be slightly closer to the "Lens" or the artist thus giving the impression it is larger however it is just simply the way he is sat :) The end repair is outstanding and to say how much of the piece was damaged and there was no name to help with references I think it is a mighty fine job !
