Why negative of negative is positive?

Since childhood we have been studying that -(-5) = + 5. Buy why?

I think 5×(-3) is not (-3)+(-3)+(-3)+(-3)+(-3)
BUT. -3×5= (-3)+(-3)+(-3)+(-3)+(-3)
