1981 Topps were the first cards I ever bought as a kid. The only place near me that had them was a local deli. BMX bikes with friends for a sammich, candy, and cards became a regular thing that year. I remember trading a Henderson for a Rose, my buddy was so honest that he wanted to make sure the Henderson was not a rookie card before he allowed the trade to be final. And as an update, he is still a good guy to this day, and I still have the Rose card to this day as well.
I was 7 when these came out and I remember walking to the corner store with my sister to buy a few packs. I have always loved this design. The big hats were the best!!
I always loved the big hat set! most '80s topps are great. I'm not much for 85 though. Awesome to see these being opened. I remember opening 83, but not 81 or 82 back then.
Awesome break man. 1981 was the year I began collecting baseball cards. Of course sold all I had in the mid-80's (kept loose in a big brown box, of course) at a yard sale for $8 (along with original Star Wars cards). Hey, that was a lot of money to a kid back then! LOL 🤣
A very nice cello box of a beautiful card set.. This brings me back when I was 8 years old and was my first year collecting baseball cards. My mom bought me a 1981 rack pack from a Ben Franklin store in Michigan at that time and I was hooked collecting since that day. I sadly ruined the checklists and team cards by using pen marks to see who I had acquired. Overall I enjoy this Topps set.
Jeff Bagwell's mother comes in to my work a couple times a month and she said next time she comes she'll bring in an autographed card of him, she's so sweet! I started working a week after he came in with her and he was taking photos with some of our employees, darn it! lol.
Love your videos, but boy did you screw up with that Dave Martinez call.... LOL. Keep the videos coming man, we enjoy watching them! Love these 1981 Topps cards too..... I was in middle school in 1981 and remember buying packs with my lawn mowing money.... If I recall correctly, I could buy a few packs and some candy bars for a dollar. Such a worry-free and innocent time.... Playing little league, buying packs, and watching TWIB (This week in Baseball with Mel Allen) was all I needed!
Always loved this set. At one of the first card shows that I went to as a kid in the early 90s I bought a Mookie Wilson / Hubie Brooks / Juan Berenguer rookie card for $.50 and thought I made out like a bandit.
Its amazing how many complete games Fernando had in '86. 34 starts and 20 complete games. And btw he racked up 21 wins. You probably would not get 20 complete games from the entire league combined. I missed the work horse pitcher like Nolan, Rodger, and Maddux. I have a great memory with my uncle watching that Kirk Gibson homerun.
I've been watching your videos lately and they've got me back into getting cards. I pretty much stopped in 2013 but before I stopped I ended up getting a Bryce Harper 2012 topps auto RC #661 in a blaster box from my Walmart easily my best card ever.
6:24 My very first Card...also was "MY" player. Tiger fan and Steve Kemp was THE player at the time. Gibby, Tram, Morris...not yet the stars they would become. Kemp was the big dog. In 1980 Kemp hit .293 with 21 HR's (that was good at the time) 101 RBI He was a good young player.
Cool throwback. I am thinking my son and I should work on this set after we complete the 1974 Topps set. We just finished 1980. Hoping to do all 1970’s and the early ‘80’s.
Fernando velanzuela was the one pitcher i always heard people talking about when i was a kid...that he was great and all that. So i always tho he actually made to the HoF but i just learn from Sir Erik Jabs he didnt...learn something new everyday. Nice break.
Stunning how off cut these are out of the box. Complacent at the Topps in early 80's. no wonder GM10 cards get high dollar. super rare to get one just right.
Ah yes. Good ol' Don Aase (pronounced AH-see). One of those names that stuck out when I was very young and getting into cards and the sticker year books.
I wonder how difficult vintage cello packs are to tamper (vs rack packs from same era, junk wax Score, 1989 Upper Deck, 1990 Leaf, 1991/92 Stadium Club, and present-day Topps which has had pretty much same packaging type since mid 90s)?
I love 81 Topps but let’s be real. There just aren’t very many cards of note in this set. If it wasn’t for the grading industry this would still be a $40 box. That’s great for investors but sucks for the casual collector who wants to build their own set from wax and cello.
Completely agree. Watching this vid validates the question I had when upgrading my complete 81 set a few years ago, "why are there so many miscut cards"? Wonder if the run for cellos was done after the standard wax pack printing....cause the guys running the cutting machine had a pretty rough go!
Kirk Gibson had 2 of the greatest at bats. 1984 World Series against Goose Gossage. They were going to walk him and Goose said he wanted to strike him out. Next pitch into the upper deck at old Tiger Stadium.
It seems that a lot of these are way off center top/bottom. The Fernando rookie looks almost cut off at the bottom, horizontally. I don't remember these being that bad when I was a kid, then again, I was just happy collecting cards lol.
this set in particular takes me back to my youth, 10 years old flipping cards in the schoolyard
You don't flip cards you ruin them that way

My first cards i bought also
Just bought a cello box of '81 Topps. Thanks Jabs Family for getting me back into one of my favorite hobbies as a kid!! :)
I was 7 when these came out and I remember walking to the corner store with my sister to buy a few packs. I have always loved this design. The big hats were the best!!

The very 1st baseball cards I ever owned. I traded my neighbor Voltron for 2 shoe boxes full of these back in the early-mid 80's.
Voltron was your neighbor? That's awesome bro 😆

Love the Throwback Thursday ‘s ! I am an 80’s collector also ! My favorite player was Jose Canseco love the 86 donruss set
Nice break! Great to see the Baines rookie card & all the HoFers being pulled. Thanks for sharing!
Wow! This box took me back to my childhood.
29:10 , while you're at it also look up his 1984 WS home run, that was just as memorable :)
Funny that Gibby homered off two hall of famers in Goose (84) and Eck in (88), truly clutch

chuckmeat thats cool! my mom said i used to look like jeff bagwell lol
It's amazing how off center the cuts are. They really improved the process over the years :). Fun break!
Sharp looking box. Very thoughtfully put together.
My favorite card ever in the first pack -Phils win WS. 13 year old me bought a ton of packs that year

Fantastic video as always, Jabs!
Thanks for the video Erik. Love this series that you do.
Another great throwback Thursday

I spent all my money as a kid buying 81 Topps. I was focused on getting All-Star & Red Sox cards.
This is why I look forward to Thursday.
like the 81 design, archives and TBT brought the design back in 2018 and it was awesome.
Ahhh flashbacks to me as a 10 year old..love it.
Love these TBT's. Thank you.

Great video as always brother! Have a sealed box of this as well, can't work up the courage to open it lol
Awesome old packs. I love digging for hidden gem cards also.
That's my era of good memories!
3 non-rookies graded psa 10 in this '81 set are absolute fire...Nolan Ryan, Pete Rose, and Ricky Henderson
Chasing Donnie Baseball None of which were pulled in this video.
TBT should be 1984 Donruss. Would love to see that. One of the nicest looking cards ever created.
I got an autographed Tom Brookens from this year.......... I know him. A#1 guy!! JJ from Chb Pa. Tom still lives in Fayetteville.
Kingman used to hit some mammoth shots for the Cubs
Harold Baines inducted into the Hall. The Veteran's Committee message to both Bonds & Clemens: "Only in your dreams."
Cool throwback. I am thinking my son and I should work on this set after we complete the 1974 Topps set. We just finished 1980. Hoping to do all 1970’s and the early ‘80’s.
Wow one of my favorites cards from topps.
Fernando velanzuela was the one pitcher i always heard people talking about when i was a kid...that he was great and all that. So i always tho he actually made to the HoF but i just learn from Sir Erik Jabs he didnt...learn something new everyday. Nice break.
You blew by Leon Durham rookie.
Love that Steve Trout card from this year.He looks like he should be playing guitar in Van Halen or Whitesnake or something.
I agree. That photo is exactly what I think of when it comes to early 80's hair styles.
these were the first packs ive ever opened as a 5 year old! lol
I was also 5 in 1981 lol I really didn't collect cards until 1984
Breaking unopened material is typically a losing proposition, but its fun to watch. You should do a vending break sometime.
Waiting on that 1983 Topps break...it will be epic. Gywnn,Boggs and Sandy. But mostly for Gwynn.
Erik great job as always. I love seeing some of the names from way back when. I believe Don Aase is pronounced Ah-sea.
I think the Bain’s and the s Brett are the nicest looking cards. They look pretty centered and sharp.
You are so close to 100k subscribers!
Always enjoy these man keep
It up
These were the first cards that I bought. I struggled to get the Steve Garvey. I recently bought the Garvey from this set that was autographed.
Stunning how off cut these are out of the box. Complacent at the Topps in early 80's. no wonder GM10 cards get high dollar. super rare to get one just right.
i always liked the design of these.
Baseball card exchange takes the ones with good player on them and then puts other rack pack in there place..I knew a guy that worked for them
this is the year i started collecting
Cool break.
Great TBT!
You can do it Ricky Bobby eat the gum😂😂
I blame dusty for killing mark Prior's career. And forcing Kerry wood to the pen. And he made many questionable personnel decisions
Wow, old school man!
10:48 Bob Walk. Funny name for a pitcher.
Yeah, him and Eric Plunk.
Old Beckett Mags are cool 😎
Ah yes. Good ol' Don Aase (pronounced AH-see). One of those names that stuck out when I was very young and getting into cards and the sticker year books.
great stuff as usual.
I love 81 Topps love your channel to
Rich and Eddie Murray 2 cards apart!...brothers!
Pedro Guerrero was on a 79 prospects card
That cubs team card is cool
Awesome box
When you pass by my favorite player ( 29:20 ) and you don't say anything, that makes me sad.
I wonder how difficult vintage cello packs are to tamper (vs rack packs from same era, junk wax Score, 1989 Upper Deck, 1990 Leaf, 1991/92 Stadium Club, and present-day Topps which has had pretty much same packaging type since mid 90s)?
Holy stale bubble gum Batman those 1981 Topps are awesome!
I like the design of this year
Sweet TBT!
I had to rewind to 12:49 ...to be sure that wasn't George Brett, dude looks just like him lol
I bought a 1989 Fleer box from Bbce & got a Billy Ripken F-face error.. So they are definitely not searched
I love 81 Topps but let’s be real. There just aren’t very many cards of note in this set. If it wasn’t for the grading industry this would still be a $40 box. That’s great for investors but sucks for the casual collector who wants to build their own set from wax and cello.

You had already passed a checklist when you said that’s our first checklist near the end of the box lol
This is cool and awesome
1981 I have a ton of them in my collection 5,000+ but probably missing a few for the whole set. lol.
steve garvey got no love. got past over like 1 cent common. garvey was the mattingly of those days.
meh.
$400 is too much.
Not to shabby at all!
21:41 you forgot to point out that checklist HAHA
Nice video
Kirk Gibson had 2 of the greatest at bats. 1984 World Series against Goose Gossage. They were going to walk him and Goose said he wanted to strike him out. Next pitch into the upper deck at old Tiger Stadium.
Sparky was ecstatic about them pitching to him. He knew what was going to happen before it did.
This box was previously searched guaranteed by the seller
Use the 93 Beckett's or 94 ones to have crazy prices on cards that's when the boom was going on
What? No Joe Charboneau rookie cards?? Just kidding.
I enjoyed the break. I opened probably 10 wax boxes back then. It brought back great memories.
It seems that a lot of these are way off center top/bottom. The Fernando rookie looks almost cut off at the bottom, horizontally. I don't remember these being that bad when I was a kid, then again, I was just happy collecting cards lol.
Nice little set but i have a hard time getting into this cause i only know maybe 50 to 100 of the players or so at best but nice opening
Fernando Valenzuela Psa10 is Pop 0 . Not one Psa 10.
Fernando valenzuela psa10 1981 topps would fetch a substantial amount. Looking at 5k and up.
Nice vid jabs, love the nostalgia. Are you going to the national, or the AS game ?
Possibly both. Thanks for watching!
Love 1981 topps
I have the complete set in great condition in a binder
My billy Wagner card came in today. Appreciate what you do Erik
1991 topps has the chipper jones rookie card and the Erik Karros rookie cArd and Jeff bAgwell rookie cArd and the pudge Rodriguez rookie card
Yeah and the 1991 Fleer doesn’t have Chipper Jones! A waste of money
Nice cards
How do I get a pack
I'm a big Harold baines fan
Reggie Jackson cards are cool because most are action shots instead of posed shots. Maybe he didn't cooperate with photographers...lol
81 Ricky Henderson is a great card
