  • This is a follow up to my other Crankshaft Seal Replacement video. After climbing under to perform an oil change, I noticed a lot of fresh oil present on the bottom and in the vicinity of the bell housing. I replaced the intake gaskets a few months ago and noticed then that the valve cover gaskets appeared to be leaking. So ... I purchased the valve cover gaskets (with O-rings) and performed the replacement. This process is straight forward. There are a few hoses, cables, coil pack, etc that need to be gotten out of the way but no major equipment removals. The whole process took a little less than two hours, even stopping to film.
To summarize, if you have traces of dust/dirt caked oil around your valve cover gaskets, particularly on the bottom/outside by the exhaust manifold, your gaskets are wore out. If you're at 100k miles, you can bet your need to be replaced. The most telling sign, in addition to the present of fresh oil under the engine) is the caked oil on the egr body (passenger side) behind the passenger valve cover. With the cover off, it's easy to see the oil running down the mating surface and back toward the egr valve.
