  • In this video Dr. Strauss discusses the evolution of scoliosis braces over the years, starting from the 1600s when armorers made the earliest braces.
Many different brace designs came into Vogue, and they were often named after a city. The earliest brace was the Milwaukee brace, which was designed to stabilize patients after surgery. However, it was uncomfortable and caused jaw problems due to a cervical piece that went up under the jaw.
The next evolution was the plastic brace, with the Boston Brace being the first. While the Boston Brace can be custom-designed, many are still off the shelf, and they open at the back, making it difficult for kids to get in and out of them. Other brace designs include the Providence brace, Charleston brace, Chino brace, Rigo brace, and Skully brace.

How do I know which kind of brace to get? I'm trying to look for something without the aid of doctors as I do not have health insurance. I thought this video would be helpful but it didn't really go into detail about which kinds of braces are good for what. You did provide a relatively brief overview but I was hoping for some more information to help guide me find the right brace for my body while working. Back to Google I guess...

You would like a Cheneau type of brace. They are thin and buckle in front. However they can be pricey! Like $4,000
