  • This short film will take you through the process of making a spinal brace for a patient with scoliosis. With exclusive access to the on-site orthotics workshop at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, you can see the whole process - from when the patient is first cast, through the manufacture and shaping and on to the final fitting.
The Orthotics Department at RNOH is supported by a team of experienced orthotists and orthoses are manufactured on site in the centre's workshops. We specialise in assessing and managing complex problems and work with other members of the multi-disciplinary team, especially orthopaedic surgeons and physiotherapists.

This is a very interesting way to create a brace! But, in my case, the process was different.
The doctor first scanned my body with a device, which made a copy of my torso (probably by 3D printing) While scanning my body, I did self-correction I was taught from scoliosis physical therapy.
Then, the next time I came in, they heated up a large piece of plastic. They let me add colors when the plastic just came out of the oven by putting some ink on the brace! They then wrapped it around the copy of my self-corrected torso. I saw it dry, it was so cool!
After it was dried, they measured it and cut it about 6 times to make everything comfortable as possible for me. After they cut all the parts off, they let me drill the holes for the straps and let me attach the straps to the brace. After the final touches, my brace was done!!!!!!
This may be different for other hospitals that specialize in scoliosis.
(So sorry for bad grammar, I'm only an immature middle schooler lol)
This was for the daytime brace, which I had after the nighttime brace. A nighttime brace is a brace that you only wear for the nighttime. (10-12 hours a day) It's considered very lucky to get one since many get a daytime brace that needs to be worn at least 21 hours a day. I regret not taking responsibility for the chance. I've had the nighttime brace for about a year, but since my curve worsened about a whopping 10 degrees, I had to wear a daytime brace :( (I also gained 12 pounds in 6 months so that probably affected my back)
For the nighttime brace, I went to a different hospital that didn't directly specialize in scoliosis, just brace making for any part of the body. All they did was measure my body, and it was done in about three weeks.
I just got the daytime brace two days ago, this is my second day wearing it. It's way more comfortable than the nighttime brace because it doesn't push as hard!
I also still do scoliosis therapy for 30 minutes to make my back muscles stronger. What happens is, basically an instructor teaches me how to do exercises for my back to get stronger so I can maintain the corrected posture of my straight back.
Special thanks to my parents for paying all this money and working hard just to fix my back.
Also thanks to my doctors who are very supportive, kind, and caring!

In less than a year my back got worse by 15 degrees (double what it was) I get a brace I have to wear for 22 hours a day once it’s made

Thanks for posting this. Sophie has had four brilliant braces made by the RNOH at Stanmore so its great to see how much care and attention goes into making them!

@@grajo9572 I suggest a rigo chineua brace, that may be incorrect spelling. They have them in Germany as well as Columbia/Morgan Stanley hospital in NYC. It's about $8,000-$12,000 but insurance usually covers it.

I really want a brace that would look like this pattern. I am known for wearing cat ears in my school, and that brace would compliment my outfits.

Wait so say I got fitted for a brace on like April 7th what would be the normal amount of time I would have to wait to get the brace?

I got mine within 3 weeks. However, I was a more urgent case since my spine got really bad in a short time. So idk if I was lucky to have a spot so quickly or that it's the normal waiting time

TsinFt10 if the person is still young and growing, a brace makes sense even for less severe scoliosis because it then wont get worse. If you just leave it, you will probably have a lot more issues when the person grows up.
