The manga does have a lot of references to Ultraman and something that's cool is that the beginning colored shots of the Dandadan opening are references to old Ultraman openings. The freeze frame shot of Momo doing her roundhouse kick also looks like Ultraman for a moment (her earrings tilt up and look like the eyes).

DanDaDan is one of the few Manga I read almost every new issue. Super happy they went all in with the animation, if you go look at the action screens the impact frames are insanely cool to look at.
Few fun background facts: The Author of Dan Da Dan worked as Fujumoto's assistant during Chainsaw Man part 1. Ken Takakura was a Japanese actor who was known as the "Japanese Clint Eastwood." He was famous for being the stoic badass. Granny's Voice actor Is the same as Monkey D Luffy, and Dan is the same as Tanjiro from demon slayer.... So Luffy wanted to gobble Tonjiros knob.

Granny proposed a fair trade..... 👟
Edit: also about the one girls make up, it's a subset of Gyaru fashion, Ganguro or Yamanba I believe, more heavily tanned + very flashy and overstated makeup that is in sharp contrast of their tan.

Just to add a little bit. This trend started as a way to protest against the beauty standard of Japan that is why it looks over exaggerated. So these girls are seen as rebels and outcast which says a lot about momo becuase she doesn't judge a person from the outside and is happy to be friends with good people (her friends do care about her as shown in the epsiode).

I'm surprised nobody noticed the orange fella or parody of him holding up a signed bill on the UFO magazine at 6:50. The anime even mentioned the U.S. Space Force, and the Space Force happened to be formed under that guy's administration.

In the manga the scene where Ken shows Momo the magazine it shows a pic of former US president Barack Obama but they scrapped that part of this episode. I'm commenting this because it's something I noticed and thought it was funny in the manga 😂. The IRL cultural references are great, I'm sure they'll incorporate them in the anime.

Any place with violent death, suicide, betrayal, death in childbirth, grudges, death in sea disasters, great shame, etc. Japanese ghosts - yurei - often have motivations that are basically the same as western ones, aside from technical spiritual details associated with Japanese religions. The "standard trope" of what everyone expects the most stereotypical ghost to be like (often dressed in white burial kimono, tangled hair,, lacking feet and floating) but there are plenty of other types. The major difference from the US is that female ghosts tend to be the most powerful (Japan's top three legendary ghosts are all women), and like some other cultures (e.g., Ireland, Scotland, China, the Philippines, etc.), Japan has a huge traditional folk taxonomy of ghosts with many subtypes. There are the major categories like onryo (for vengeful ghosts with a grudge) or ubume (ghostly women dead in childbirth) but there are all sorts of specific subtypes who return for more obscure reasons and appear as hags, balls of flames, demonic figures, etc., most of which derive from popular collections of regional ghost stories published in the 19th and 20th centuries, along with some traditional hauntings of famous castles and other places that date back to feudal times.. On top of that are a wide variety of modern urban legends similar to the Vanishing Hitchhiker types and some unique Japanese cultural traditions -- for example, at one time it was common in Shinto tradition to make human sacrifices of criminals (or others) to gods at major infrastructure construction sites by burying the victim in the support pillar of a bridge, the foundation of a building, castle, or dam, etc. and these legends also naturally provide a nice source of ghosts. There's also the old "we built a skyscraper over x without doing proper diligence, and spirit is restless" It is also worth distinguishing between traditional folktales and ghost stories on the one hand which use all this taxonomy, and what any modern Japanese "ghost hunters" do, who are more likely to use western-influenced terminology and paranormal jargon rather than the traditional names.)

Thanks for sharing this. I generally assume things like this are similar across many, if not most, cultures. However, I'm always interested in learning about the differences and how/why they came to be differences.

In Japan there's a subculture known as Gyaru.

TO ANSWER QUESTION ABOUT JAPANESE GHOST LORE:
usually hospital, abandoned warehouse, deserted town, rural villages with ancient folktale, a house with horrid story, abandoned shrines, and so on are places you often see occult things. Another source of occult in japan is local URBAN LEGEND which can be weird and basically lame sounding but they are creepy to the city folks there.
Tbh, anime and manga with these genres aren't new. The problem is old anime fans watch it, calls it mid subjectively, and never looked back even though its probably different depending on who you are. So alot of the new anime fans never knew those shows from back then that would explore these myths and lore and occult cliches.
Ghost in Japan are a culminations of their own occult things mixed with western ones. This is why shows like JJK is a mix of curses that is japanese theme and western theme.
