G'day Maám , jack from the outback of australia here , i made a batch of powdered potato a while back , left some at a fishing camp i had up north , but life was weird and it took me 12 years to get back that way , we dug up our cache and found the dehydrated potato and other foods still intact , we cooked it up and it was fine , , my taters where made using only water and salt and tasted fine , like many things the additives are the issue , powdered potato made at home with a dehydrator and mylar bags are fine , the ones with creamers or powder milk or butter have issues past 4-6 year , same as canned soups , if they are a cream based soup they wont last as long as home made and canned that are not cream based , cheers!
Ijust opened a 1YO can of Walmart evaporated non fat milk. Not at all good. Never had a problem with the regular. I bought the non fat by mistake. It looks like Ill be tossing the other cans 😢
I have had difficulty with canned milk - any brand, Pet, Carnation, other -- keeping up to the date on the can. Certainly not beyond the date. I don't know why, but it doesn't keep. Powered milk, on the other hand, if sealed and kept properly seems to keep a year or more past the date and still taste good, and stay fresh after reconstituting for the expected # of days, or longer -- a week or two in the refrig and still good.
My experience is that you can eat expired food but they don't last long for leftovers. You could always feed it to animals. You might eat it if you were straving.
I make instant potatoes very often. I keep the plain instant potatoes in air tight containers and add the potatoes to broth or water with my own spices added in, the plain instant potatoes store longer then the instant potatoes with butter in the package. Great video!
I opened a Healthy Choice can of chicken noodle soup that was a year past its date, the color was fine looked good but it had a metallic smell to it and when I poured it out of the can the bottom and side had some blackish discoloration right on the metal, so it was a toss it out for me.
When my ex-wife moved out in October 2014, she left behind some canned tuna that she always bought for me. She never date marked anything. So I sorted all the 10 plus cans and found one that was dated 2005. This was in 2015. Can was not damaged, so I opened it up. The contents looked and smelled OK. So, I ate it. It tasted the same as a current dated can. I typing this on 2-29-24, so I'm still here. We became "best Friends" in 2018. She passed on in October 2023. I had the job for disposing of all her food she stored as a pepper. She did do some dating of her horde, but never date sorted stuff. I have eaten 2 year old Idahoans, Knorr Rice sides with no ill affect. 1 and 2 year out of date Kirkland Whole Fancy cashews. Still good and yummy. She had so much in storage, that I shared most of the items with a family friend that had 3 children and the father was on disability. The stuff I kept for myself will last me for several years to come.

Good video. There are a lot of uses for potato flakes. I make potato patties and fry them with a little oil and serve them with ketchup. Potato flakes make a fantastic potato soup also.

Hi AG, I opened a 12 oz. can of Walmart Chicken breast on Tuesday that was dated 2017 - yeah, I missed that one during rotation. The can was clean, intact, no bulges, no spurting when I opened it, and the meat smelled and looked like it was canned yesterday. The inside of the can and lid looked good, too, no discoloration. I used it for chicken patties , and it was delicious. I think I would have passed on your potatoes, too. If it smells and looks off, don't use it.
I am slowly working my way though some canned soups, vegetables and fruits with BBDs of 2021. So far, they have all been fine. One can of peaches was a little mushy, but it was a store brand that I've never tried, so it be the norm. Tasted fine, though.
Had some potato buds a couple yrs old. Made them up and yuck!! Yellowed color should have been my first clue..my chickens loved them! I have eaten canned vegs, beans and soup 6 to 12 yrs old still good. Home canned venison and tomatoes from 2010 we are still enjoying. But beets from store 4 yrs old not so good...lol! Every can may be different. Take care up there! Hugs
I have eaten the potato soup that has been out of date and turn this color and it tasted fine. Now that being said, if you have farm animals like chickens, they will eat it and it’s no problem for them.
I've had Progresso Chicken and Noodle soup a couple of years past the best by date and it was fine. I've also had a can of regular corn from Aldi about 18 months past the best buy date and it was fine.
Thanks for the (always) honest evaluations. I haven't put away many packs of potatoes with extra ingredients. I have packed away a lot of plain instant potatoes and dehydrated plain potatoes. I don't think we can expect the others last 10 years. I have had many canned good way past their 'best by' dates. I almost always freeze packets like above, open boxes and make foods airtight and freeze pastas and their mixes,(mac&cheese, dried spaghetti mixes, etc.) and all are lasting well
I have had problems with anything that has butter power or cheese sauce. I found some expired macaroni and cheese and it was 7 years old and the cheese powder was discolored. I had plain NON-flavored straight up potato flakes that were fine ten years later so I think it’s really just the seasoning packets or seasoning in the mix.
Macaroni and cheese in the box use before the Best by date, the cheese packets, goes stale I made up the box to see and smell it and it smelled stale, it was a year out of date. 😊
Several years ago, I found the Kraft Cheese Powder ( just like what they use in the boxed Mac and cheese) on sale on Amazon (they stopped selling it shortly afterwards) and bought 3 big jars. It was cheaper than buying the packages because I bought macaroni in bulk. Anyway, by the time I got halfway through the second jar, it had turned brown and had a strange smell. It was about a year past its BBD. No problem ... I still had another new jar. Nope, same thing, only it was like concrete! So I had to toss it, too. Lesson learned. Sometimes, the BBD is right! LOL
I work at rotating, but some of the “not my favorite” items still go past date. Tomorrow I’ll use cream of chicken soup 7/23, mixed veggies 12/23 in a casserole. The exp dates write the menu plan 😀
I eaten those potatoes a year past the date - the only thing I found different was that they take a little more liquid and a bit more than the usual five minute sit time to become fully ready to eat. Still delicious.
I love these potatoes …sooooooo easy So filling So yummy So inexpensive I never knew Campbells sold beef gravy in a can, I’m going to have to buy some to try.
I don’t go past 1 year on tuna. I noticed over a year they smell a little off and the inside of the can doesn’t look “new”. I usually will throw them out. But i do open them for curiosity.
I've had the same instant potatoes expire just over the one year mark. I prepared them but they did not taste good at all. But I've eaten expired over a year canned roast beef with gravy and it was just fine.
My new from storage meal. 1 box chicken stuffing, make and put in greased casserole dish, make 1 pkg chicken gravy and add 1 can chicken, pour over stuffing, make 1 pkg mashed potatoes, put on top and bake. Add cheese the last few minutes if you want. Freezes well in individual containers. Just thaw then microwave. Love your suggestions, Granny. ❤️👍🇺🇲
I think i wouldve still mixed a bit just to tiny taste it!!!! Yes they contain oil. I had some bout 8 hereford roast beef cans that were over 5 years old sitting out in the garage that froze over and over before i found them. I opened and tossed 5 of them having a fit at the waste cause all had a major texture change. Smelled ok. On the 6th i decided to heat up and see. Heated extra long and the flavor and texture were just fine and mixed into a soup. Was delicious. That was 2yrs ago. I hav since ate the other 2 cans n were fine. Still kickin myself at tossing the other 5 opened cans. No not all comes back from being frozen but these did. !!!! And i heated each one, taste tested ,before i mixed them in anything. The inside of can also looked just fine too. No dents corrosion discoloration bulging or leaking. i wouldve tossed those without hesitation!!!!! Still wouldve been mad but would toss them!!!!
Have those & mine are within date but everytime I go grocery shopping especially for hurricane stock I hear you say, make sure to get the just add water because it's just easier in a hard time or place! Nothing more comforting than potatoe anything when I'm hungry, sick, stressed or tired. I keep a small short metal coffee mug to set it & wait for it to be done. So again, a great help in simple & efficiency. 😊
Sweetened condensed milk in the can. Two years past expiration-- it turns brown and looks like dulce de leche, but definitely doesn't taste like dulce de leche! I had to toss!
So good to find you again! When I start a prepping in 2020, I forgot to look at Best Buy dates and ended up with a ton of Kraft Mac n Cheese! Well now in October 2024, i just cookef ate a box from September 2023, but I have to admit I doctored w/ cheddar brick cheese and it was delicious!!
AG: I've had some canned vegetables that were a year out of date. The vegetables tasted bland. I've also had ingredient packets with spices or powdered items go stale around the expiration date such as rice dishes, macaroni and cheese, etc..I usually run into freshness issues with things that contain oil such as nuts and nut mixes like granola, peanut butter, etc.. One of the purposes of a good inventory was to prevent food loss because of expiration dates. A good rotation plan is necessary in order to save money.
That's funny, we had Idahoan Red Mashed Potatoes for dinner tonight. Mine expired in May 2023 but they were just fine. Hopefully I don't have any that are 11 years old! Great video and glad you opted to pitch them. Definitely not worth getting sick over.
I'm glad you didn't try those potatoes. You make your usual good points on integrity of package, smell and looks. Are those potatoes packed in mylar? It reminds me of mylar kin a way. Maybe cheaper version?
I think maybe last Year, was their last chance to eaten. Lol. 😊 Glad you didn't risk it AG, definitely a funky colour. TFS AG, take care & keep really busy everyone. ❤️🙂🐶
Yes, these are my favorite instant potatoes too. I like the baby reds and the buttery ones. I have several and they are expired for about a year. Using those up and they have been fine. I keep buying them as they only need hot water to cook. No milk. Would work well in a hard time or an emergency. Thx for your channel, AG. Love all the info you give us. God bless 😊
When we moved, I found a jar of coconut oil in my craft room that I had used to make bath bombs with 12 years prior. It looked OK and it smelled OK so we ate it. It was perfectly good!
Yes the best by date printing can be very small and in unusual places. Usually less ingredients means its better for you. The color difference can be due to the different ingredients. Cook it well mix it in with the dog's food. They will thank you for it.
A couple of months ago I used a can of tomato paste and a can of diced tomatoes 🍅 with BBD of 2019. They were fine. The 2 cans of tomato saice (same vompany, same BBD) spurted when I opened them and had black flecks floating on the tops. My sense of smell is impared, so I don't always trust it. I tossed them and used some from 2021, which were fine.
The Reds are my favorite anywhere for this type of thing, but it is very difficult to see any bugs, or mealies, or tiny trespassers if there are any -- due to the chunky texture of this. Generally speaking, something like this I feel needs to be inspected whether or not it is out of date for tiny holes, etc, or anything amiss, since you just can't easily tell. Or eat the bugs and shut up about it! LOL! Love!
Yes, AG ... I like these potatoes too... I like the Baby Reds and the buttery ones. I buy them as they are good and just the right amount for 2 of us for dinner. and you only need hot water to make them... I have several saved but none of them are expired yet. Thanks for this video, AG. God bless. And a hug for your cute Teddy. (this is my 2nd time watching this video.)
Found a unopened package of Sunsweet Morella Cherries in the cabinet back in August of this year (2024) that had a best by date of May 2012. Opened them and had a nice smell kind of like a wine. Package interior reminded me of mylar. Tasted a few and seam ok. Ate the whole package over the next 3 days with no problems.
I have had Idahoan Potatoe bags well past dates. Like 5-10 years. As long as they aren't super fancy and as example have butter and cream flavors it should last even longer. Oldest was 20 years almost. Was actually really good. It's one that does last.
The packets of Idahoan potatoes have more ingredients than plain potato buds. I dump the entire package in a bowl, microwave 2 cups of water for 3 minutes, dump the water in the bowl, stir then eat.
I've eaten potato flakes 3 yrs past their date and they have been fine. I'm going thru all my pantry items and using up everything that is 3 yrs past their date. So far, everything is fine, even my home canned foods.
Thank you for the information. I have powdered milk. Exp. 2019. Still in original box. It is fine. Using it up for cooking. Also a can of tomatoes & Chili peppers. Same expiration date. It was fine, used in a pot of beans.
I loved your video and I have to say, I was hoping that you were going to tell us that the potatoes ended up being edible, even after 11 years. I always love finding out, from reliable sources, that "best by" and "expired by" and "sell by" dates are all in the eye of the beholder and can be extended much further than one might believe. I agree with your conclusion on this one for sure, in spite of my disappointment. You asked for some personal experience with food eaten at a time beyond what is expected, so I'll share this. Two weeks ago I ate a store bought, regular, economy (no free range and no organic nonsense) on sale for $.99 per 18 ct. egg, that had a packaged date that was very close to the day I bought it, based on the package labeling. That constitutes a "fresh" egg in the grocery world. That egg was one of 90 that I coated with mineral oil when I bought them. It was stored along with 5 of its brothers and sisters in my basement, in a dark room with no climate control (my "food storage" room) beginning on September 1st. I ate one of those eggs, pan fried, on the 1st of every month thereafter to see if it was still "good". The 2 month old egg was rotten to the point of stinking through the shell and being green on the inside, but the remaining ones didn't stink through the shell, so I continued the experiment. The 3 month egg was fine, except for being a little thin in the white, and I ate it with no ill effects. The egg that I speak of in the opening of the paragraph was eaten 2 weeks late, which made it 4 1/2 months old, and it fried up fine and I ate it with no ill effects. I will be eating number 5 later today, marking 5 months at "room temperature". The other eggs, out of the 7 1/2 dozen that I bought at that price, were coated with oil and kept in plastic egg cartons that I bought on Amazon ( the paper cartons that my eggs came in are said to absorb the oil off the egg shells so I repackaged them after oiling). Those eggs have been kept refrigerated all this time and they have been used every way you can imagine. The only ill effect that I've seen after all this time is that they no longer poach well (lots of those wispy white strings that are hard to keep under control) and are difficult to peel, if hard boiled. Beyond that they work great. I think the 2 month egg at room temperature, that turned rotten, was a fluke that happened to have a cracked shell that I didn't notice and I could tell it was going to be bad before I even cracked it, by its smell. Sorry this ran so long, but I hope it helps you with your storage decisions, because your videos help me with mine.
Instant potato flakes with no flavoring or oils will last several years past the best by date. I pour the contents of the box into a freezer bag and put the bag in the box and tape it closed and they last years that way.
I Love your tips ❤ I made a quick recipe. I cooked up a small amount of elbow pasta and drained it. Opened a can of Campbell's chili mac soup. Poured it in with pasta. Then added a can of hormel chili to it. Added onion and fresh garlic. It made a great little chili mac meal...hearty. one son liked it. Then next time did the same but more pasta, 2 cans of chili mac soup and a can of chili. Made a big pot. It all got eaten within 2 hours 😂😂
The one i remember the most...A box of Jiffy mix corn muffins. A little expired opened it and put in a bowl...then saw weebles EEEEW! From that day ive stored all dry products in my frig. Pasta goes in ziploc and into frig...eventually it gets moved to pantry. Flour, sugars, rice, dry potato flakes all in zip locs and in frig.
I have found weevils in Jiffy corn mix, too. I can't bring myself to buy more than one box to use right away. I always inspect the bottom of the box in the store, too. Maybe find some hanging around there.
I ate plain potato flakes from Shiloh Farms that was 2 years past date. They tasted stale, but my husband thought they were fine. I am a "super taster", so not much gets past me, lol.
Great comments so far. I, too, probably would have tried a spoonful before tossing but the nose knows. Any comments/insight on the Great Value brand? I hadn't tried instant potatoes until last week. I ordered two 4pks (buttery homestyle and roasted garlic) of the GV. Cracked a buttery to try it and was pleasantly surprised. Pre-pandemic I was an Atkins leaning carnivore and hadn't bought a potato, or any starchy veggies, in nearly two decades. Since the pandemic carbs have returned to my diet to stretch (or as Alaska Granny would say ~"make bigger, better, more filling") every meal. Even still my only potato consumption was whatever was in hormel compleats. Not satisfied with the meat to potato ratio in the compleats so I'd rather use instant, but if the instant aren't ideal for long storage, should I wait until I reduce my pasta stash?
I just came across your videos and so far have enjoyed them. What caught my attention was the one you were doing on the brother sewing machine , I am having a problem with my machine could you give me any insight on my machine bobbin tension is really tight top stitch is perfect also do you have video on making button holes ,my machine is the XL26100 thank you for any help you can give me , God bless
1. Using a small slotted screwdriver, turn the slotted head (-) screw to adjust the bobbin case tension. Bobbin Tension Do not turn the phillips screw (+). 2. The thread tension is correct when upper thread slightly appears on the wrong side of fabric. 3. Upper thread on the right side of fabric seems to be lifting/looping and bobbin thread is not seen on the wrong side of fabric. - If this occurs, turn the slotted-head screw (-) counterclockwise being careful not to over-loosen the screw, approximately 30-45 degrees to decrease bobbin tension. Bobbin Tension 4. Bobbin thread appears slightly on the right side of fabric. - If this occurs, turn the slotted-head screw (-) clockwise, being careful not to over-tighten the screw, approximately 30-45 degrees to increase bobbin tension.
I had some 3 years past, wad discoloored some, this was the garlic one. When j cooked it, seem to need more water and butter, taste was good. But nor as creamy.

I'm using canned evaporated milk in my coffee that "expired" in Jan 2023. It's fine. ☕️ Sacramento, California USA 🇺🇸
I just did the same thing recently - smelled and tasted fine and no ill effects. I used the remainder in a recipe with no problem.
Ijust opened a 1YO can of Walmart evaporated non fat milk. Not at all good. Never had a problem with the regular. I bought the non fat by mistake. It looks like Ill be tossing the other cans 😢

Yes, I agree. It's the butter and oils in them that go rancid.
I mark my foods just like that. It helps a lot because I find expiration and best by dates are really hard to find and read.

@@indigobunting5041 I go through my stash and check the dates. If the package looks funky or if it smells bad when I open it I pitch it.
Most of the packaged foods have oil in them and go rancid. Rice packages usually do also.

I drank a 4 month old expired yogurt, didn't see the date until after I drank it. Nothing happened just a super case of the yogurt farts

Thanks, AG. I was tossing these packes because the labels said "buttery," and fat goes rancid.

I've had the same instant potatoes expire just over the one year mark. I prepared them but they did not taste good at all. But I've eaten expired over a year canned roast beef with gravy and it was just fine.
I’ve eaten cream of mushroom soup five years past the expiration and it was perfect!
Thanks to you and all who shared their experience in the comments. I just ate some Idahoan from Oct 2022 and they were fine.
Thanks for the recipe!
Sounds great!
I normally try to buy the packages that are pre-packaged in a mylar bag which gives you the best protection.
Great comparison and thanks for the smell check.
Perfect to serve with Libby's canned sausage gravy!!!
I love Idahoan mashed potatoes, especially the loaded version.
Excellent video!! Happy Thursday,AG!!
Sweetened condensed milk in the can. Two years past expiration-- it turns brown and looks like dulce de leche, but definitely doesn't taste like dulce de leche! I had to toss!
Instant potatoes without added flavoring would probably be fine.
I just opened a jar of mayo that has a best by date of July 2023, purchased in 11/22. It is perfectly fine.
The color difference might also have something to do with the ingredients differences.
Great video thanks again Alasking Granny ❤
I think maybe last Year, was their last chance to eaten. Lol. 😊
Glad you didn't risk it AG, definitely a funky colour.
God bless 😊
Thank you for your honest review ! 👍💕
My pleasure 😊
LOL! Love!
Thanks for the information
I need to get plain instant potatoes in the commercial size steel cans for the best shelf life before opening.
Thank you 😊
Thanks for watching and sharing ideas!!
Glad they were still okay!
Darn. I would have called the old one "cheesy" potatoes and tried to serve them. 🙄
Maybe they would be called Montezuma's cheesy potatoes.... Yuck!
Thanks for sharing this. Your videos are awesome 😊 im in NC.
Thanks for watching!
Yes, it is better, not to eat it, for safety measures.
Just like you mentioned, it is not worth it.
Thanks for sharing. 🙏👍👏❤️🌹💫✨🌟❣️
I have had Idahoan Potatoe bags well past dates. Like 5-10 years. As long as they aren't super fancy and as example have butter and cream flavors it should last even longer. Oldest was 20 years almost. Was actually really good. It's one that does last.
Oh and watch the temp you store at, lower is way better...
Thanks, very interesting 👍
Glad you think so!
So far, everything is fine, even my home canned foods.
i’m watching this video while eating potatoes from 2014
Thank you for the information. I have powdered milk. Exp. 2019. Still in original box. It is fine. Using it up for cooking. Also a can of tomatoes & Chili peppers. Same expiration date. It was fine, used in a pot of beans.
Sounds great!
Thank you
You are welcome!
Thank you❤
You're welcome 😊
Thanks so much for sharing your experiment with us.
I noticed that you didn't add "We're going to try it ourselves, right away!" LOL @@AlaskaGranny
Hi Alaska Granny. So In your opinion, how long do you think the potato’s would last for in the pantry ? I heard you say maybe 2 years?
Instant potato flakes with no flavoring or oils will last several years past the best by date. I pour the contents of the box into a freezer bag and put the bag in the box and tape it closed and they last years that way.
My oldest was a 14 year old can of Campbells soup . I lived but it did taste a little like the can.
You can use em in mres, soups, and in a situation you can eat em raw.
That's good right out of the bag with water
The oils in it is rancid
Yesterday I made seasoned chicken stuffing mix and ate it and I'm fine - it was past the date.
Sounds yummy, thanks for sharing.
Great video!
Thanks for sharing this, AG! It was very helpful
You are so welcome!
At least someone will eat your cooking!😍
Those bags they come in are they considered something like a Myler bag people store food in good video blessed day😊
I think so!
Unbelievable how the newer package has all those extra additives that are not necessary or good for you.
It’s important to read labels carefully.
😂 love this one ...
I recently through out a jar of 8 year expired Vegamite..
Keep mine in freezer
I just came across your videos and so far have enjoyed them. What caught my attention was the one you were doing on the brother sewing machine , I am having a problem with my machine could you give me any insight on my machine bobbin tension is really tight top stitch is perfect also do you have video on making button holes ,my machine is the XL26100 thank you for any help you can give me , God bless
1. Using a small slotted screwdriver, turn the slotted head (-) screw to adjust the bobbin case tension.
Bobbin Tension
Do not turn the phillips screw (+).
Bobbin Tension
