  • Four hours of Donizetti and no singing? Yes. Except for a brief intervention by the chorus (O nume pietoso at 3:19:25) in the Poliuto sinfonia, it's 4 hours of pure Donizetti orchestral glory! It's difficult to choose one these pearls as my personal favorite, but if I had to, it would be Fausta, which is unmistakably donizettian from beginning to end. Roberto Devereux the most exciting, Rosmonda the most fun. La Favorite the most elegant, a sketch for the overture of Verdi's Luisa Miller by the way (as Belisario's is a precursor to the orchestral introduction of Rigoletto). Curiously, the Parisina overture was simply borrowed from the one of Ugo Conte di Parigi (two different renditions here). Enjoy! The photograph is of Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo. Donizetti was born in Bergamo's Borgo Canale quarter and his first opera, Il Pigmalione (composed 1816), was given its world premiere at the theater on 13 October 1960. Adjacent to the theater is a park with the Monument to Donizetti.

    Thanks for sharing. It´s one of the best contributions to appreciate, love and know the talent of Donizetti as an operatic composer, even he was a complete musician.

    Vielen, vielen Dank für diese verdiienstvolle Zusammenstellung. Getty089 fasse es bitte nicht als negative Kritik wenn ich darauf hinweise dass das "All" etwas übertrieben ist. Donizetti hat etwa 75 Opern geschrieben. Diese "unmenschliche" Leistung zusammen mit der Syphilis führte wohl auch zu seiner schweren Leidenszeit am Lebensende. Aber er lebt weiter in seinen unsterblichen Werken. Nochmals: Mille grazie!!!

    • @brunoantony3218
      @brunoantony3218 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes we know he wrote more than 33 operas. But only 33 of his operas have overtures, the remaining have preludes, not overtures, do you understand? And he didn't write 75 operas, the correct number is 66. The number only gets higher than 66 when you consider French versions and other versions of the same opera.

      @@brunoantony3218 Thanks for the fast response. I finally found a recording with the preludio/introduzione. I noticed that some Italian 17th and 18th century operas use the term "sinfonia" as an orchestral introduction. Would this be more of a prelude or an overture?

    • @brunoantony3218
      @brunoantony3218 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gary Hughes A sinfonia is an overture. A prelude (preludio) is an orchestral introduction, like in Lucia, Lucrezia, L'Elisir d'Amore. Donizetti wrote an overture for Maria Stuarda for example but the critical editions omits it. There's only an orchestral introduction to the chorus.

    America’s famous song “My Country Tis of Thee” uses (stole) Donizetti’s theme from Roberto Devereux

    • @brunoantony3218
      @brunoantony3218 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      “My Country Tis of Thee” is from 1832 so it could not have been stolen from Roberto Devereux (1837). The song uses the same tune of God Save the King, the national anthem of the UK, from 1745. Donizetti used the theme briefly in the Roberto Devereux overture as a reference to the British crown, the same way he used “Home, Sweet Home” in the final scene of Anna Bolena.
