They're only painful if you do them wrong. Consistantly having a tight ponytail can literally permanently ruin your hair. Look at JoJo Siwa. She's a child and her hairline is permanently jacked up and her hair quite literally has changed the direction in which it grows. That is due to the too tight ponytail that she insists on wearing.

If you compare pics from a few years ago to now you can see some recession. It’s called traction Alopecia and it’s from strain on the hair and loss of blood flow causes the hair to not grow as well.

tbh her hairline has gone back a TAD bit but everytime she does a high pony w the extensions, part of the routine is filling in some of the sparse looking hairs around her head with root touch up spray. i do the same thing when i do my high pony. to make the hair look more full.

jennifer ajavon I stand by the original comment, without getting to technical hair goes through three different phases one where it grows, one where it’s stagnant and one where it falls out. If a hair is growing or stagnant and the roots are activated by a head massage or being pulled on “ever so slightly” it actually stimulates the follicles and makes hair grow a little bit faster. Obviously there’s sound proof that hair pulled too tight lead to bald spots, keloids, irritations, and a slew of other negative things.
In this video Gabi talks about how how after getting the pony tail removed she couldn’t believe how much longer her hair was after just a few days. My comment was just pointing out that she wasn’t just imagining it that it sounded likely to me (a hair professional) that having that much weight of hair on your head is more than enough to stimulate your hair growth.
But that’s not to say she could’ve taken then pony tail out and been surprised by a thinning spot of hair if the weight of the hair was too much for the existing hair to handle.
