    No. Christopher Hitchens was not "contrarian". And he was not "left" or "right-wing". He was just right. Right in the meaning of opposite to wrong. Intelligence, understanding and truth does that to people. Some people.

    McEwan is one of my favourite authors. His writing is so precise, finely chiseled but not cold. He's almost like a word-surgeon. This is how I feel about him anyway. Hitchens, on his dedication of "god is not Great" said that McEwan "shows an extraordinary ability to elucidate the numinous without conceiding anything to the supernatural" and "sublty demonstrated that the natural is wondrous enough to anyone." A great way, thanks to Hitch, to articulate my thoughts.

You will live forever in our hearts. From Lebanon with love. You will be dearly missed

    Thank you Christopher, thank you for your contribution to this world. Your genius brought us God Is Not Great, your logic devastated religious nuts, your free speech showed the world that fanaticism can be beaten. He did not live for god he lived to make a better world for his children, my children and your children and that is the best principle to live by. That is the principle you want to live by not the principle of some religious dogma.

    A lot of people sling that kind of terminology around with only a superficial understanding of it. No, Hitch was not a narcissist. You are quite right that there were too many people he stuck his neck out for, as well as obviously admiring and caring for. He could have gotten pulled dangerously into the outrageous stink around Rushdie and avoided contact with him, for example, but he was the man's most consistent support through all that period of ducking and hiding.

    Kudos to the backroom boys and the sonsy front-room girls at Bush House. The ten-minute tribute packs in the incomparable quiddity of a multifarious contrarian. Ian's improvised ad-libs conjure up the unfinished, but intriguing portrait, of an agonist who thrived on polemics. Chris achieved much more by 62 than sundry Methuselahs in 600 yeas. He was not only super-literate but also extraordinarily susceptible to the ubiquitous abuse of power, whether in a cathedral or a casbah.

    *Wikipedia: Christopher Hitchens has written of his homosexual experiences when in boarding school in his memoir, **_Hitch 22._** These experiences continued in his college years when he had relationships with two men who became a part of the Thatcher government.*

    @martinjackson909 Yeah Hitchens made money, he was also the greatest polemicist of our time truly unmatched in the world of debate. His writing and debates offer so much more of what is important to consider than the Koran and the Hadith ever will.

  • @garythefishable
    @garythefishable 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I'm an athiest and I'm not gay. To say that a man's sexual orientation can influence his disbelief of religion is ridiculous. His atheism comes from his high level of education that enables him to deconstruct religious beliefs due to their contradictions with proven science. If there is any correlation between homosexuality and atheism it would only imply that they are more intelligent or gay religious people are afraid to come out because of the hatred they would get from their own people

    • @wackojacko3534
      @wackojacko3534 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course it influences a man's view of religion, if he likes to do something specifically characterized as (extremely) evil multiple times by most major religions. But I think Hitch was only experimenting during school, the way a lot of British fairies apparently do. He only banged broads the last 30+ years of his life, as far as we know.

    'Many young journalists can't resist him'. Let's hope so, because free thought needs people with great intellects to stand up for it, when all around, the voices of religious and political intolerance and of oppression growl more fiercely.
    I only mention journalists in the same paragraph as intellects because they are the most likley voices to be heard in a noisy, western society and not because I equate journalists with having high intellects.

    Hitchens was a great thinker, intellectual, writer, etc. He also came across as a narcissistic, pretentious douchebag a lot of the time. For as great as he was in certain areas, the way he came across almost cancelled it out for me. We're all human and nobody's perfect. I just find people that have a strong narcissistic streak laughably pathetic.

  • @martinjackson909
    @martinjackson909 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @AJBuwalda If a church makes money from its followers atheists say its ALL about the money. When an atheist makes millions from books, lectures, etc. atheists say it is irrelevant. Hitchens, Dawkins, etc would be half as famous/wealthy as they are now if they weren't atheist.

    @charlesvan13 some of the nicest comments I got from my friends when Hitchens died, (they all know how much I idolized him) were from some of my liberal Muslim friends. The only people I know of that claim Hitchens was anti Muslim, are white Christians. He was an ally for all oppressed people regardless of their faith or lack-thereof. When Chomsky was defending the Serbian fascists, Hitchens was on the side of the Bosnians.

  • @AJBuwalda

    @martinjackson909 Context my ass. How did I take the verses I used out of context? The main message is that you better believe there is a god or that awaits is punishment. I can post loads of them and know their context quite well. So I dare you; put them into context.
    The second wasn't a question, but a statement. So explain to me how the amount of money he made invalidades his argument?

  • @martinjackson909
    @martinjackson909 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @AJBuwalda 1st question: The bible's MAIN {the word mostly didn't work for you} message is love, peace, and harmony. Have you read about "love thy enemy" and "turn the other cheek"? There are a few verses out that rich atheists like Hitchens like to take out of context, for the money.
    2nd question. Hitchens job title is journalist. The average income for journalists is around 40,000 dollars. Hitchens made millions (from books, lectures, etc).

  • @CheDonJohn
    @CheDonJohn 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I winds me up when people can't seem to grasp the idea of someone (like Hitchens) having a mixture of beliefs. The lazy polarisation of ideology and theory into a left-right dichotomy is to blame for this.
    If someone has such a mixture of opinions it's not because they are 'all over the shop'. It is because they are non-partisan and form their opinions objectively, rather than forming opinion automatically, by default, based simply on which doctrine they adhere or which side they want to be on.

    @AJBuwalda "The main message...you better believe there is a god...I can post loads of them...put them into context". Whats wrong/immoral/unethical/bad about believing in God when the God mainly teaches good values?
    2nd question. I am not saying his arguments aren't invalid because of the money he makes. His arguments are invalid because he misrepresents religions that are mainly peaceful and moral. He does it for the money.

    @alexanderalexandrou Re-read my previous statement and add this to it (it answers several of your questions). They would be as famous and wealthy as any ordinary academic if it wasn't for their atheism. Because of their atheism they are/were millionaires, which explains their bias when discussing religion.

  • @alexanderalexandrou
    @alexanderalexandrou 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @martinjackson909 Is it bias, or do they simply have some extremely good arguments against religion? I would say the latter. They may have partially done it to self-promote and make some money on the side, but this doesn't change the fact that their arguments are valid. The messenger is unimportant, it is the message that counts. Not to mention that Dawkins and Hitchens had extensive bibliographies and media presence long before getting into the atheist arena.

    Hitler was a Christian who wrote in his book Mein Kampf that he was doing GOD's work by eliminating the curse of the Jews! Found on the Nazi's belt buckle were inscribed the slogan "God is on our side!" They chanted these words before saluting Hitler. The Vatican/ Pope said prayers to Hitler each year on his birthday in treaty to the third right. Basically your comment relates to Religion not secular people like Hitchens.

    @martinjackson909 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @AJBuwalda "Most religions are not morale and if you had actually read the holy text in detail (like me for example) you would know that." This proves that you either intentionally or unintentionally don't get what I have been saying. "in detail"? In other words, what you are saying is "if you listen to Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins like me you will learn that there are a few verses that are immoral". The Bible's MAIN message is love and harmony. Do you deny that?

  • @AJBuwalda
    @AJBuwalda 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @martinjackson909 I surely do. I had never heared or known of both Hitchens and Dawkins when I decided this. Even more so, there was no internet at the time. All I had was the bible and my own mind. That was all I needed to see this was a vile text about genocide, infanticide, rape, slavery, repression of women lead by a totalitairian entity. The claims were so outrages and the evidence so non-existant that I as 12 year-old could tell this was rediculous and cruel.

    @AJBuwalda 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @martinjackson909 First of, I don't care how much Hitch made with his books. It is quite frankly irrelevant. Secondly, I was raised Christian and have read the bible from cover to cover three times. Jesus did not preach love. He preached for you to leave your family behind to follow him, (Matt. 10:35-3, Luke 14:26) he did not denounce the OT but rather reinforced it (Matt. 5:17-19) and was pro-slavery (Luke 12:47-48). A few good words does not excuse all the overwhelming (cont)

  • @martinjackson909
    @martinjackson909 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @cott2696 Do you know that Jesus mostly preached love and harmony? Do you know that Muhammad commanded Muslims to give charity, honor orphans, obey their mothers? No. You listen to Hitchens (a guy who makes millions, from books, lectures and articles).

    • @MarlboroughBlenheim1
      @MarlboroughBlenheim1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jesus preached that you should leave your family, not worry about tomorrow, that you would go to hell if you didn’t agree with him. He never condemned slavery, which was endorsed by the bible. This is not love.

  • @AJBuwalda
    @AJBuwalda 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @martinjackson909 First, you did not say a word about scripture after I called you on it, what's up with that?
    Secondly, how much more money was to been made if he was religious? Quite a bit more, so to imply that he "did it all for the money" rediculous and does not detract from his arguments.

  • @martinjackson909
    @martinjackson909 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @bensil34 Referring to the Sunnah of Muhammad as "the Hadith" is similar to referring to the Bible as "the Verse". Anyways, we are getting tangent. All I am really trying to say is I know religion and Hitchens isn't as impartial as his fan-boys think he is. Maybe its because of the money. Also, I suggest that you listen to people you agree with (Ron Paul, Al Gore, Hitchens) and people that you don't agree with (Hannity, Pat Robinson, read the Bible independently) with an OPEN-MIND. I'm done.

  • @martinjackson909
    @martinjackson909 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @TheJamesvanmiert "the Hadith" What is that? I suggest you learn more about Islam from actual independent research, not just Hitchen's bias work (which he made millions from). I watch Hitch videos and have studied the Bible with Christians because it is better to be open-minded. I suggest you do the same. Peace.

    @martinjackson909 How would you like these atheists to share their thoughts if not through lectures and books? Carrier pigeons? Or perhaps, they should hand out their books for free. It is laughable to believe that such academics and intellectuals would lack success if it weren't for their atheist label. The church wouldn't have a dime if it weren't spreading its vile, primitive, unfounded dogma. And all of this is irrelevant in the conversation about what's true and valid.

  • @thebones

    be careful making assertions about people that suggest illegal practices, there are lawyers and you can be traced. Forgetting your obsession with the sexual practices of strangers, what sort person spends their days judging others? Firstly you attack homosexuals for being who they are and then you launch into a rant about perverts and beastiality and everyone but YOU is a sick pervert? Read your bible and follow the passages where you're asked not to judge - unless you wish to be judged.

  • @alexanderalexandrou

    @martinjackson909 We live in a free part of the world. Good for them if they made some money promoting good ideas. I find your indirect and implied attacks on their ideas due to the fact that they made some money out of them quite offensive, really. Attack their actual ideas if you have some better ones and put these obvious ad hominems to rest. It's a very tired and tediously boring christian tactic. Christianity has made a fortune promoting nonsense. You're a hypocrite.
