As someone who wanted to be a professional singer, this guy was my IDOL. He had the power, the voice and the style. I graduated High School in '63. In 1964 I moved to L.A. to give it a try. I won a Talent Contest sponsored by "KFWB" RADIO STATION and DANNY THOMAS. I won the contest and appeared on a "DANNY THOMAS COLOR SPECIAL" IN 1965. I had to audition for DANNY THOMAS and GEORGE SCHLATTER in the final stage of the contest so when I won, DANNY THOMAS himself chose "Volare" for me to do on the show. I was thrilled because it was Bobbys' song ! After appearing on the show, I was signed to a recording contract with "ABC PARAMOUNT RECORDS" by FRANK De VOL . I then got signed to do a ROAD TOUR of the TV SHOW " SHINDIG" .This song was so big ! Back then the singers really had voices. Also, most were Italian ! Loved my teen years. Loved Bobby. I wish I could go back in time.

To listen to the skinny kid from Philadelphia years later, and really focus on his voice , the song and all aspects of the song that escaped us years ago, is even more entertaining.

I'm 76 & did Army Basic training at Ft Dix, NJ (at age 17) at
the same time as Bobby in 1964 , but didn't know him! (Future
film director Terry Gilliam served in my outfit, though!) Unlike
many other celebrities, he did his military duty & deserves
to be recognized for it! (Saw him once, "Golden Boys") R.I.P.Bobby!

On this day in 1964 {January 12th} "Forget Him" by Bobby Rydell peaked at #3 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard's Easy Listening chart, the two records that kept it out of the top spot were "There! I Said It Again" by Bobby Vinton at #1 and "Popsicles and Icicles" by The Murmaids at #2...
He had two other records make the Easy Listening chart, "Stranger In The World" {#23 in 1965} and "Sway (Disco Version)" {#27 in 1976}...
Between 1959 and 1965 the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native had twenty-nine records on the Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; six made the Top 10 with his biggest hit being "Wild One", which peaked at #2 {for 1 week} in 1960, the week it was at #2, the #1 record for that week was "The Theme from “A Summer Place'" by Percy Faith and His Orchestra...
He just missed having two more Top 10 records when both his "Kissin' Time" {1958} and "Good Time Baby" {1961} peaked at #11...
Mr. Rydell, born Robert Louis Ridarelli, celebrates his 79th birthday in three months on April 26th, 2021...
And from the 'For What It's Worth' department, the remainder of the Easy Listening Top 10 on January 12th, 1964:
At #4. "Dominique" by The Singing Nun
#5. "Whispering" by Nino Tempo and April Stevens
#6. "As Usual" by Brenda Lee
#7. "Since I Fell For You" by Lenny Welch
#8. "Midnight Mary" by Joey Powers
#9. "Talk Back Trembling Lips" by Johnny Tillotson
#10. "Anyone Who Had A Heart" by Dionne Warwick

I think "A Summer Place" was the Song of the Year and stayed in the #1 slot for 9 weeks in 1960. I guess if you have to finish at #2, it may as well have been to the best. No shame I. that. God bless Bobby Rydell for all the great memories he created through his music!

I truly feel like I was born several decades too late; certainly in the wrong era! I love artists like Bobby Rydell, and his talent and relatable songs continue to intrigue me. I would have loved to have been able to experience such an interesting and evolutionary period of time in our world's history, first hand. From what I've been told repeatedly, this era was genuinely incomparable to anything else we know of.😊

Saw Bobby Rydell with the Golden Boys show when they performed for a machine tool meeting dinner in Orlando a number of years ago. By far he was the most dynamic performer of the three and had the whole audience on the edges of their seats. Thanks for the “golden” memory!
