  • Today I compare the Fuyu persimmon to the Tanenashi persimmon. Both are Asian self fertile varieties. The Fuyu seems more common in the US and is non-astringent. The Tanenashi is astringent meaning it must be fully ripe before eating.
Overall I like the flavor and texture of the Tanenashi better. It is rich and sweet with a dark honey and apricot flavor. The flavor seems more intense than a Fuyu. The Fuyu has a similar flavor but I feel it is lighter (less intense) and the texture can vary more to your liking as it is non-astringent.
If you can only grow one tree I think the Fuyu is better since it is non-astringent. I am more accustom to the Fuyu as I buy it in stores every year. If you are looking for a rich flavor and don't mind waiting for the fruit to ripen, I think the Tanenashi has a better flavor. I have a tree of each variety in zone 8a, just east of Dallas.

Same. There is also a Chinese baby persimmons. It's small like a baby's hand but you can pop it in your mouth without the stickiness from the peels. It's a great balance between Fuyu and Tanenashi ones. Quite expensive imo but it's a great experience to have.

There are actually American varieties as well which are smaller however I think most of them have seeds.

@victormartell00 both variety have done well in Texas zone 8a. Persimmons are usually zones 7-9 which means they grow well here regardless of the variety.
