  • The Cornelian Cherry Dogwood(Cornus mas) is an underutilized alternative fruit. These fruits are typically astringent and sour but harvested correctly they can be delicious and sweet.

Choke Cherry you can eat right off the tree when they look ripe. They are not very sour but can be bitter. Cornelian Cherry(which is a Dogwood) is very sour and not bitter.

Thanks for the firsthand experience. I was just speaking with someone from Iran the other day and was very exited to tell him that I am growing this tree.

With mine, the darker the sweeter and milder they are. I have grafted varieties that have just started fruiting this year. Two of them are extremely good and very much like sour cherries but without the disease and bug problems. I also, like him, wait until they fall off the tree and collect them from the ground.
