VICE thank you very much for covering this story. I grew up in Hong Kong and I would always buy 老夫子 comics while my family bought newspaper from these stands. I was born in 1980 and don't even remember the last time I went to a news agency and bought a magazine or the newspaper. Even as late as 2019 I still remember seeing those news stands selling DVD's. Thats the underlying problem with Hong Kong citizens, the hold onto the old and refuse to "get with the times" its no wonder they have a struggling economy that is now almost totally reliant on China. Once a bustling city jewel of Asia is no more, they are no longer a tourism hot spot, no longer a shopping paradise, no longer music/movie empire and their famous ports are no longer being used. The decline in news paper sales is so bad, news stand actually generate big portion of revenue from selling sodas, cigarette etc. The license listed 12 items that can be sold legally. Most news stand conduce their business illegally by selling items that are not covered under the license.
Meanwhile you can find news papers and books in convenience store like 7-11. Convenience store has to paid monthly bills (e.g rent) but the news stands are a direct competitor in the sales of items mentioned above. This often raise the question of competitive fairness.

This is not necessarily as political as some of the interviewees are making it out to be. People don't buy newspapers anymore because they are reading news on their phones. In cities across the world, news stands are increasingly a relic of the past--I certainly do like seeing them but the reality is that news media has long evolved from relying on paper.
