Beautiful collection of OTFs. Absolutely no idea why people make such a fuss over these knives. As someone with limited hand dexterity for almost a third of the year due to arthritis I find these knives become extremely helpful especially when it’s cold.
It's not alwaya about how fast they open. I'm trying to find which company/knife has the tightest lockup or I mean the most minimal play in the blade and I need it to be a single-sided edge. I can't seem to get much info on that. People say oh microtechs are the best and it doesn't affect performance. It matters to me though. Does anybody have any help in this area?

I have a Microtech which needs so much thumb strength to fire and even more to retract. I've given up and use a cheap Lightning OTF and love it. Super easy fire and retract.
I’ve owned several high end OTFs. It’s funny but I’ve always gone back to my Lightening OTFs. I have 3 and use them as my EDCs. They’re my favorite OTF . They sharpen easy and hold a good edge. Simple strong double action. In fact I’ve carried and used the so much that the paint has worn off of part of the handles on two of them that I carry the most.
I don’t really care for OTF knives but figured I needed at least one for my collection. I went the cheaper route with the kershaw livewire. It seems like a decent one but then again it’ll never see much use.
However there is often a reason for the price. For example my gen 3 combat troodon ran me $450 but I get the smoothest and easiest action on an otf due to its new internal redesign and it fires just as hard. Looking at the luminary and hawk deadlock you're spending larger money for a blade that doesn't have any play. Or you could get a kershaw livewire for a bit less and the blade looks thin, the action is stiff and wears at your thumb, the blade rattles loudly, what have you. It's okay to not buy they nicer, more expensive knife but it's obnoxious to complain about it and claim it isn't worth msrp when you haven't and may never handle it.
Great presentation. Just one bit of advice for next time, use a light colored table and wear a light colored shirt, more light. The details of the knives will be much easier to see. 🙂

Microtech is working on fulfilling LUDTs for their Service Personnel Program. Delays across all industries are slowing down production however they are still producing the model.
OTF slide switches require a decent amount of force to operate and have a long travel distance before the knife is deployed. So while it is possible for the slide to potentially catch on something in the pocket, it is highly unlikely and completely uncommon for someone to pull with enough force for it to deploy on accident 👍
Unfortunately the G&G Hawk Deadlock is a very limited and expensive ($1100 base) OTF. While it is arguably the 'best' it is also not generally available to most people.
Nah, consider it the best just because the blade doesn't move? I just believe this OTF is good seeing a stress test on it. I don't like the design of this OTF and the blade to handle ratio seems to be bad too.
Due to the fact that each company is at liberty to adjust/raise their Minimum Advertised Price (MAP), we avoid including price in our videos but do provide links in the description to take you to each item mentioned. Thanks for watching!
Guardian Tactical is known for their extremely smooth slide switch. If the retracting of the blade is still difficult, a single-action OTF (like the Heretic Hydra) might be worth looking into. They offer fast deployment but require two hands to retract, but less thumb dexterity is needed. Hope this helps! 👍
I'm thinking about buying an OTF knife, but i'm afraid it will open inside my pocket and cut me. Is it possible for that to happen? If so, is there any OTF knife with like a safety lock or something?
There are multiple safety features to prevent accidental deployment and reduce injury with your standard dual-action - the slide switch requires a moderate amount of force to deploy, and if the blade comes into contact with anything upon deployment, it will actually detach from the rails making it no longer under the spring tension. There are single-action automatics that are button-deployed which have a "safety" cover over the button, but usually, those are easily pushed aside and may actually be easier to accidentally deploy in the pocket.
I think that technically could happen but the slides on the OTF knives are very robust. My 8 year old can’t work the action so I think as an adult you’ll probably have no problem.
Some knives are designed to be primarily carried on a specific side and are not easy to operate with the opposite hand. There are also many knives that are designed to be ambidextrous 👍

Hi Natalie! First of all, we highly recommend looking into the legality and any restrictions on knives in your area, as well as on campus. It is on a case-by-case basis, so there may be restrictions on blade length, opening mechanism, etc... For self-defense, we also highly recommend attending an in-person course if you can find one in your area. While automatic knives are fantastic for being concealed, in moments of panic they may be hard to deploy for the inexperienced, so you may be better off with a smaller fixed blade. Additionally, our #1 recommendation would be pepper spray/gel since you do not have to be as close to the assailant to use it, and there will likely be far fewer legal issues. We hope this helps!

OTFs are neat to own, fun to play with... But not worth what they cost Vs what they offer. Unless you're using it defensively (many more efficient ways to do that), there's no practical purpose for one, that isn't lapsed by a good folding knife.
@@fullfire0 I haven't used two hands to open a knife in 20 years ...out the front, spring assisted, automatic, or just an all around balanced blade with a thumb stud... They all come out about the same speed these days. The difference is the stabbing and cutting ability of most any knife other than an out the front, is far superior.
@@joeytomato I'm not implying you use two hands for other knives, I'm saying the otf is much easier to use one handed. Maybe not on the open but certainly on the close. It's faster.
@@fullfire0 ...and why would there be an urgency to close a knife? You're using a knife defensively, or for utility. If I need it defensively, I wouldn't be putting it up until the threat was over, and if I'm cutting a box open, there isn't much of a rush for either. The job had been completed, or the knife wouldn't be going back in my pocket. There are also many knives that can be closed, just as fast, that cost a 3rd as much. Any axis lock will just literally fall closed. Most liner or frame locks with the same movement of a thumb, will cause the blade to fold closed under its own weight. I don't care if anyone wants to spend their money on any knife, regardless of the price... But let's just call it what it is... "Wanting". Because when it comes to usefulness, the value, just isn't there. If you spend 300+ bucks on an OTF, you're literally doing it because you want to... Because it's "cool". Not because it's better. And that's fine... But don't try to tell folks you paid so much for a knife, for any other reason. On modern, "good" knives, opening with a thumb stud, takes no more effort than pushing a button or pushing a switch. The same can be said for folks who paid 5 and 600 bucks for regular old locking blades. It's about bragging, way more than ability.
Thank you so much, and I am sure it will. I just moved to California and had to retire several of my EDC on account they were just a bit to long or to fast.

@@joeytomato Why are you getting so butt hurt over this? It's kind of sad honestly.
That Piranha Excalibur put a grin on my face it's so sexy!

It would be great to see a " Best OTF Knife allowed in California"
In this video we go over some of the best CA-legal automatics! Hope it helps!

Thank you so much, and I am sure it will. I just moved to California and had to retire several of my EDC on account they were just a bit to long or to fast.
Don't live in CA
Mine is the cheapest
I see no need for laws on knives with springs in them. Knives do not kill people. People kill people.
None. Even the best OTF knives can be problematic. With an OTS as long as the spring does not break I can service, sharpen and fix it myself.
My Gerber Propel OTS broke in under 50 opens, and their warranty program was a pain, customer service didn't care, chucked it into closet and went with Microtech. It's still going strong 5 years later
G&G Hawk has an OTF called the Dead Lock. A bit pricey, but they warranty everything and even put a video on TH-cam showing how to take it apart and service it yourself. He encourages it.
One of the best purchases I've made!

The button on the microtech is way too heavy
So that you won't accidently deploy it at the wrong time. I don't want to trash your thumb strength.
@@wesleywarsmith1113 safety is important and I have others that work great. Thus is just unnecessary.
If you are having difficulties with operation you may want to contact Microtech for warranty support. Thanks for watching.
thats what I like about my ultratech!
So no real budget or affordable options. Sad.

your test sucks, you even didnt test how knife edge feels under a pressure, if knife mechanism doesnt brake etc.
