Thank you for a great presentation. My wife gave me $ for Christmas so I'm picking up a Hogue compound just after the holiday. green g10 and black tanto blade -- pretty stoked. My 2nd otf.
I have a Microtech which needs so much thumb strength to fire and even more to retract. I've given up and use a cheap Lightning OTF and love it. Super easy fire and retract.
I’ve owned several high end OTFs. It’s funny but I’ve always gone back to my Lightening OTFs. I have 3 and use them as my EDCs. They’re my favorite OTF . They sharpen easy and hold a good edge. Simple strong double action. In fact I’ve carried and used the so much that the paint has worn off of part of the handles on two of them that I carry the most.
I had one built from a company in Arizona called RavenCrest Tactical and they made it with a custom Tanto two tone blade and a Glass breaker ...... these OTF are sweet ......
I've always wanted an OTF knife and 2 months ago I finally got one. But mine is from Raven Crest Tactical. Mine is a double action Titan Bravo with a Tanto serrated blade. I was looking to see if you show cased it in this video to see how it compared to others. But since it wasn't, I will say it is a very nice knife with a glass breaker on the cheaper end at $115 for mine. It does however have a break in period (that I didn't know at the time lol) where you just have to open and close it a bunch so it breaks in. Kind of like a gun. When you first get it it is very hard to open and close. After a day I put some gun oil in it and on the button where it slides against the frame. The slide on it looks like the Guardian Tactical Recon- 035 on the one I got btw. After that it did become easier to open but still had a way to go. It has a safety mechanism where if something blocks the blade from opening it disengages, and the blade becomes loose. To reengage the blade you just need to pull the blade out all the way and put it back on the spring/ mechanism inside. Then you can close it normally. It's nice so if you accidently hit yourself while it opens it won't lodge itself in you. It'll still poke you good and probably make you bleed a little, but it's better than it forcing itself in your hand or something. In its break in period it will go into safety mode by itself a lot because it thinks something blocked it from coming out when it was just a rough opening and didn't come out smoothly. It took about a good week for it to be nice opening and closing but still went into safety mode here and there. I'd say after 2- 3 weeks of opening and closing it a good amount that I didn't have any more hiccups and went into safety mode on its own. Only when I actually block it on purpose, just to make sure it's all in working order. It is very smooth opening, even my friends who have seen how hard it is to open at the beginning are surprised on how well it broke in. It is still safe though as the button isn't that loose where I think it'll open in my pocket. In the video he says that the Guardian Tactical Recon- 035 is the smoothest one there, I can't compare how smooth mine is to that one as I have never used one, but mine is still very smooth, after the break in period that is. I recommend it to people who want a good OTF knife that's not super expensive and doesn't mind a break in period. To be fair I don't know how many of them have a break in period, I just didn't know some do and figured some other people probably didn't know either, and it's better to know now then when you get it and are surprised you can't open it and close it easily at first. Like I was lol. Didn't mean to write such a long comment, sorry lol. Just wanted to add another knife option from personal use for people trying to decide which one they want from the cool list of knives in the video. 🙂
However there is often a reason for the price. For example my gen 3 combat troodon ran me $450 but I get the smoothest and easiest action on an otf due to its new internal redesign and it fires just as hard. Looking at the luminary and hawk deadlock you're spending larger money for a blade that doesn't have any play. Or you could get a kershaw livewire for a bit less and the blade looks thin, the action is stiff and wears at your thumb, the blade rattles loudly, what have you. It's okay to not buy they nicer, more expensive knife but it's obnoxious to complain about it and claim it isn't worth msrp when you haven't and may never handle it.
I don’t really care for OTF knives but figured I needed at least one for my collection. I went the cheaper route with the kershaw livewire. It seems like a decent one but then again it’ll never see much use.
Great presentation. Just one bit of advice for next time, use a light colored table and wear a light colored shirt, more light. The details of the knives will be much easier to see. 🙂
I was interested about buying an OTF knife but my concern is accidentally disengaging the button in the pocket and the blade stabbing into the leg or through the pants.
I really wish the SOG pentagon actually worked correctly. I really want a high quality OTF with the button in the center but I can’t find one that’s perfect for me. I was looking at this knife but I’ve heard horrible things about it. Hopefully SOG will fix the dulling problem.
Good vid. Hard to beat an Ultratech for EDC but the Dirac (not Delta) is making a strong case for itself as contender. Great size and the button on the flat side makes for a super easy pull and deployment.

Shoot if it’s good enough for BatMan and a John Wick, it’s definitely the knife for me. And I’m sure you’ve seen the torchure test. The Dirac And The Dirac delta have the smoothest deployment of all Microtech’s. But my Combat Troodon in single edge clip point is my user favorite. OTF slide switches require a decent amount of force to operate and have a long travel distance before the knife is deployed. So while it is possible for the slide to potentially catch on something in the pocket, it is highly unlikely and completely uncommon for someone to pull with enough force for it to deploy on accident 👍
My only experience with OTF's is Guardian Tactical and the infamous Lightning. I'm sure there's something in-between I'll like. I really want to get my hands on a Benchmade Shootout.

I like it but if it fails I can send it when I'm at feald to who . Osborn has Omega but I take 2 springs in case and I'm set, Letherman and I'm good to go also fix blade is must hawe I realy like Mora Gerberg have it and use it 5,6.ares.
I'm thinking about buying an OTF knife, but i'm afraid it will open inside my pocket and cut me. Is it possible for that to happen? If so, is there any OTF knife with like a safety lock or something?
There are multiple safety features to prevent accidental deployment and reduce injury with your standard dual-action - the slide switch requires a moderate amount of force to deploy, and if the blade comes into contact with anything upon deployment, it will actually detach from the rails making it no longer under the spring tension. There are single-action automatics that are button-deployed which have a "safety" cover over the button, but usually, those are easily pushed aside and may actually be easier to accidentally deploy in the pocket.
I think that technically could happen but the slides on the OTF knives are very robust. My 8 year old can’t work the action so I think as an adult you’ll probably have no problem.
Guardian Tactical is known for their extremely smooth slide switch. If the retracting of the blade is still difficult, a single-action OTF (like the Heretic Hydra) might be worth looking into. They offer fast deployment but require two hands to retract, but less thumb dexterity is needed. Hope this helps! 👍
What sold and hooked me I think was that movie where he stuck that red microtek in the bathroom stall and the blade looked 3/8” thick. Clearly it wasn’t that thick but damn it looked like it was built like a tank, well for $300 I quickly figured out why it looked so cool.
Some knives are designed to be primarily carried on a specific side and are not easy to operate with the opposite hand. There are also many knives that are designed to be ambidextrous 👍
Maybe someone can steer me right. I am looking into an otf due to dexterity problems. Double action and my problem here is I'm looking for one with the least amount of blade play. I know it comes with the territory with otf knives but looking for the most solid feeling i can get. Using a protech pt+ now and its rock solid and opens so fast and tight. I know a side auto is a different animal and that i can't expect an otf the same, but how close can I get? Thanks

Hi Natalie! First of all, we highly recommend looking into the legality and any restrictions on knives in your area, as well as on campus. It is on a case-by-case basis, so there may be restrictions on blade length, opening mechanism, etc... For self-defense, we also highly recommend attending an in-person course if you can find one in your area. While automatic knives are fantastic for being concealed, in moments of panic they may be hard to deploy for the inexperienced, so you may be better off with a smaller fixed blade. Additionally, our #1 recommendation would be pepper spray/gel since you do not have to be as close to the assailant to use it, and there will likely be far fewer legal issues. We hope this helps!
If you want a smallish one I highly recommend the microtech exocet However for self defense I personally prefer something a little bigger as it can do more damage to the attacker So ide say go for the guardian tactical recon elite, plus it has very smooth deployment Lyn Thompson has a video explaining the benefits of carrying xl knives
Unfortunately the G&G Hawk Deadlock is a very limited and expensive ($1100 base) OTF. While it is arguably the 'best' it is also not generally available to most people.
Nah, consider it the best just because the blade doesn't move? I just believe this OTF is good seeing a stress test on it. I don't like the design of this OTF and the blade to handle ratio seems to be bad too.
My Gerber Propel OTS broke in under 50 opens, and their warranty program was a pain, customer service didn't care, chucked it into closet and went with Microtech. It's still going strong 5 years later
G&G Hawk has an OTF called the Dead Lock. A bit pricey, but they warranty everything and even put a video on TH-cam showing how to take it apart and service it yourself. He encourages it. One of the best purchases I've made!
OTFs are neat to own, fun to play with... But not worth what they cost Vs what they offer. Unless you're using it defensively (many more efficient ways to do that), there's no practical purpose for one, that isn't lapsed by a good folding knife.
@@fullfire0 I haven't used two hands to open a knife in 20 years ...out the front, spring assisted, automatic, or just an all around balanced blade with a thumb stud... They all come out about the same speed these days. The difference is the stabbing and cutting ability of most any knife other than an out the front, is far superior.
@@joeytomato I'm not implying you use two hands for other knives, I'm saying the otf is much easier to use one handed. Maybe not on the open but certainly on the close. It's faster.
@@fullfire0 ...and why would there be an urgency to close a knife? You're using a knife defensively, or for utility. If I need it defensively, I wouldn't be putting it up until the threat was over, and if I'm cutting a box open, there isn't much of a rush for either. The job had been completed, or the knife wouldn't be going back in my pocket. There are also many knives that can be closed, just as fast, that cost a 3rd as much. Any axis lock will just literally fall closed. Most liner or frame locks with the same movement of a thumb, will cause the blade to fold closed under its own weight. I don't care if anyone wants to spend their money on any knife, regardless of the price... But let's just call it what it is... "Wanting". Because when it comes to usefulness, the value, just isn't there. If you spend 300+ bucks on an OTF, you're literally doing it because you want to... Because it's "cool". Not because it's better. And that's fine... But don't try to tell folks you paid so much for a knife, for any other reason. On modern, "good" knives, opening with a thumb stud, takes no more effort than pushing a button or pushing a switch. The same can be said for folks who paid 5 and 600 bucks for regular old locking blades. It's about bragging, way more than ability.
Thank you so much, and I am sure it will. I just moved to California and had to retire several of my EDC on account they were just a bit to long or to fast.

I use 940Benchmade for EDC 4ares, and I use Mora when I must go to work, and combined with Leatherman whic is must for mee and Leatherman is tactical and practical not that spring youke.
@@Gpknives Thank you
I think that technically could happen but the slides on the OTF knives are very robust. My 8 year old can’t work the action so I think as an adult you’ll probably have no problem.

Which one is easiest to use for badly arthritic hands?
👍
The red Halo V used in the Slyvester Stallone movie Bullet To The Head, right?
My dream OTF is a 4 inch HALO with a drop point blade. Come on Microtech let's have it. Microtech are you listening? 😁
tnx
Why do some states (e.g., Minnesota, New Jersey, New York) ban these OTF knives?
Wokiesota😅
What is the difference between a left handed or right handed knife?
Some knives are designed to be primarily carried on a specific side and are not easy to operate with the opposite hand. There are also many knives that are designed to be ambidextrous 👍
Where did you get the guardian tactical recon 035
We are an authorized Guardian Tactical dealer. 👍
Thanks
I can't believe G&G Hawk Dead Lock didn't make it on here!
Price of Deadlock is about oll this knives
I can never look past the black/metallic blade combo. Especially on the GT Elite - it makes it look so cheap with the American flag.
The one in my pocket.
The Microtech clips are reversible. Unscrew the glass breaker and flip the clip to the other side.
I might just get a pro tec godfather
3:23 OH, Lord Almighty!
Its got some kick. 😁
@@Gpknives keeping an eye out for a red/black model. Blue is fine as well.
How can I buy one from you \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

I'm looking for an OTF smallish knife for my kid to carry at college. A glass breaker is a must have.
Aside from that, any specific recommendations for an inexperienced handler to carry for self-defense and safety?
Also any resources for training/practicing with handling it?
Yes, we talk extensively about situational awareness, finding exits, keeping calm, etc. But there has been a stabbing incident during an altercation this year already at her school and we live in generally not a safe area so I want her to have something for a last resort.
If you want a smallish one I highly recommend the microtech exocet
However for self defense I personally prefer something a little bigger as it can do more damage to the attacker
So ide say go for the guardian tactical recon elite, plus it has very smooth deployment
Lyn Thompson has a video explaining the benefits of carrying xl knives
What a nutbag country 😅
Hk is American?
Cobratec didn’t make the list?
The "Best OTF" is without exception the Grant & Gavin Hawk Deadlock, if you can get lucky enough to get one. They are superlative.
Unfortunately the G&G Hawk Deadlock is a very limited and expensive ($1100 base) OTF. While it is arguably the 'best' it is also not generally available to most people.
@@Gpknives That's true, they're difficult to get, but not impossible. The next best choice would be the Sog Pentagon. It's also really tight locking.
Nah, consider it the best just because the blade doesn't move? I just believe this OTF is good seeing a stress test on it. I don't like the design of this OTF and the blade to handle ratio seems to be bad too.
People that say this don't carry an oft. I edc a microtech cypher mk7. It has blade play and I've never noticed it in use
Best Carry Otf is the Benchmade Shootout
👍
Mmm yes 500 dollars for a knife that could still use work in some areas
🤷♂️ to each their own
Where is the infedel?
Hawk Deadlock is the best but who can afford one! 3500+
Not realistic price.Made of gold??

Things I can only dream of collecting ,living in the UK😢
That sucks it's crazy that some places outlaw knives I live in south Carolina we can carry a sword if wanted to brass knuckles are also legal to carry
That Piranha Excalibur put a grin on my face it's so sexy!
Heretic hydra is a mans knife same with halo 6
I see no need for laws on knives with springs in them. Knives do not kill people. People kill people.
None. Even the best OTF knives can be problematic. With an OTS as long as the spring does not break I can service, sharpen and fix it myself.
Worth is subjective. It's worth it for some people, not for others. For one handed use you really can't beat an otf
@@joeytomato Why are you getting so butt hurt over this? It's kind of sad honestly.
It would be great to see a " Best OTF Knife allowed in California"

Thank you so much, and I am sure it will. I just moved to California and had to retire several of my EDC on account they were just a bit to long or to fast.
Don't live in CA
The button on the microtech is way too heavy
So that you won't accidently deploy it at the wrong time. I don't want to trash your thumb strength.
@@wesleywarsmith1113 safety is important and I have others that work great. Thus is just unnecessary.
If you are having difficulties with operation you may want to contact Microtech for warranty support. Thanks for watching.
thats what I like about my ultratech!
So no real budget or affordable options. Sad.
Mine is the cheapest
