This is just wonderful, if you were to do one of the grand Odeon Theatre in Epsom road in Guildford (1935-1996) my life would be complete! My Mum saw the Rolling Stones there in 1964 and it was where the seeds were sown for my great love of cinema in the 80s and 90s! Thanks again for this. T
I agree with Hazel that it was a sad loss. In 1942 the Rex had survived a plane's engine, still running, crashing through the roof while a movie was being shown, but it took a demolition crew in 1986 to destroy one of the most interesting and grandest buildings in the town. My family lived in Haslemere and as a child in the 1950s and 60s it was always a treat to go to see a film at the Rex. Mr. Killinger was also a fan of classical music and I remember seeing the concert pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy perform there and, later on, a couple of major symphony orchestras.
The fine building of The Rex cinema in Surrey. Now gone into the sky heaven along with other fine cinema buildings there ! Art deco inside was a feast to enjoy and added real atmosphere to the auditorium . Lovely and so beautiful it was and sadly no more. Criminal and injust.
As a kid, I went to many a movie Saturday afternoons at the Rex, between 1963 and 1972. So many wonderful and fond memories ... I am so sad to hear that it is now gone.
You're welcome - as Julian Davies says below, inside the Rex was gorgeous architecturally, although I was too young to appreciate that aspect properly, at the time.. I have lived abroad now for over forty years, and have been back to visit Haslemere a number of times, since. I do like that the town has changed so little and retained so much of its character in all the years since. Yes, it's more modern and the basic infrastructure is usually better than it was in my day, but the tranquil and warm atmosphere of the town remains the same, to my mind.
There are some relics from this fine Cinema at the Cinema Museum near Kennington tube stn in London
Thanks for that Graham, PAUL.

Thanks for your comments. I grew up in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. What a mess it is today.
What a sad loss. I saw many a film here in the 70's as well as a performance by Alvin Stardust! The flats built in its place are bland and ugly.
Hi strawberrycornetto - Thanks for commenting. They call this progress! - PAUL.
