    What I love about this show, other than the complexities of Hawk and Tim's relationship is the historical accuracy. Every bit of what they were going through felt real because it was real. The fear, the paranoia, and the subversive tactics employed just to stay under the radar were very much real back then. The Lavender Scare was one of the most tumultuous times for queer community, at a time when even one false move could land you in jail and your life ruined, and this show pulls every bit of that up, front and center.

    I am really happy. Because this series is considered a revolution in the film industry! And it elevates queer series to a higher level.
    It is no longer a story about a high school boy who is still struggling with whether he is gay or not. Or he is worried that his family and friends will hate him if he come out..
    (ofcours they are important too. )
    A very mature story. The choice of actors is great, Because both are actually gay.
    And I'm here for it...

    Boys, get ready because every episode of this beautiful series has made me cry at LEAST once. It’s so heartbreakingly stunning and just so well-done. Came into it as a Jonathan Bailey fanatic (love MB, also) and his portrayal of Tim breaks my heart more and more. Feel weird typing that I’m “excited” to watch you guys react to this, given the tragedy unfolding but I’m just happy you’re going on this ride too💖💖

    The one thing (of many) that got me is that Hawk does have a conscience. Toward the end of the episode when that guy told him that Eddie tried to kill himself when he was picked up... there is a quick scene of Hawk going to his wall safe and counting out significant money, putting it in an envelope and writing Eddie's name on it, then placing it by Eddie's mailbox. I think Hawk's conscience (and love) is also what is leading him to San Francisco to be with Tim in 1986.

    this show is incredible. I was looking forward to it because I'm always interested in new gay shows and I of course love Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey (I love how different this is for him than Bridgerton), but it has definitely exceeded my expectations! I hope the quality stays this high all the way through. I'm glad the queer history of this time period is being told and more people are learning about it. The Lavender Scare was devastating for so many people. It did so much psychological damage. I would suggest reading more about it to get additional context to what was going on, and learn about Senator Joseph McCarthy and lawyer Roy Cohn and what they did in real life. There is a documentary from 2017 called The Lavender Scare that tells this story as well, it interviews people who lived through this.

    This show depicts the shocking historical persecution of the queer community which is really important, however, it's also important to acknowledge that today in 2023, 61 countries have laws that make it illegal to have same sex relations or 'promote' homosexuality. And in 12 of those countries, homosexuality is punishable by death.Iran, Northern Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Yemen Afghanistan, Brunei, Mauritania, Pakistan, Qatar, UAE and Uganda. These people live in fear of being killed if they are outed. We should not forget that the freedoms we enjoy are a privilege not afforded by so many.

    This journey with the four main characters is a lesson in the sordid history of life in the sixties. It’s truthful and painful and sometimes it’s joyful and at others horrible. I think Skippy paid the price for Hawks’ vanity. While a longtime fan of Matt Bomer and while his acting in this is spot-on, at times I detested him. His “I want it all” outlook isn’t beneficial to anyone but himself but I guess having to hide yourself and live in fear could contribute to this. I had gay friends and losses to AIDS and I have always wondered when and where did this terrible plague originate? This dredges those thoughts up again. This show deserves every credit and award available.
    PS - I still love the guys.

    If they're caught do they actually go to jail? Cuz when I searched Lavander Scare on Wiki, it says that they only get fired and can never get another government job. I mean, don't get me wrong, getting fired for your sexuality is bad but not as horrible as going to jail. Also, can I just say, that I'm so emotionally confused about Hawk. I don't like how cold he is but at the same time how can I judge him considering the time he is in.

    • @jathompson37
      @jathompson37 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Yes they could get arrested. Remember the undercover cop in the park?

    • @nininoona
      @nininoona 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      They could, and would most likely, go to jail. Also, back then it wasn't just "getting fired" you would be blasted on the front page of the newspaper and outed to the public. Most who were victims of this struggled to get both jobs and housing for decades because it branded them for the rest of their lives. Its why the young guy from the park tried to end it all, because being busted immediately ruined his future.

    • @jasonstamp10
      @jasonstamp10 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      yes, you could be arrested and thrown in jail at this time. There were sodomy laws, there were morality laws, laws against cross-dressing in public. Police would raid suspected gay bars, they would monitor and patrol suspected cruising locations, police would entrap gay men by purposefully luring them into illegal activity by convincing them it was a hookup. You would lose your job, you would get publicly outed, your family would be told the details, you would often be disowned by your family, it destroyed so many lives. The government tied the investigations to weeding out communists and the "red scare"/ cold war because it was assumed that if you had allowed your morals to be compromised and had chosen sexual deviance and homosexual behavior, then you would be easily susceptible to communist brainwashing. This means they saw you as a national security threat. Hawk behaves the way he does because he's protecting himself. He's learning how to read people, read the situations, and alter his behavior in an instant so that he doesn't compromise his safety. He has created this persona of masculinity and dominance to deflect from being homosexual because it's necessary for his survival and it comes across as cold or unemotional. That's the kind of psychological damage this type of situation creates in people. There's so much hesitation and fear and anxiety that gets created because of it.

    One thing that surprised me is that the author, Thomas Mallon, is a conservative Republican. That's not surprising on the surface, as the characters are as well. But I'm amazed that he wrote about the Reagan/Republican administration letting hundreds of thousands of gay men die, which is explicitly called out in this episode, and yet Mallon himself remained a Republican all through that right up until 2016. (I guess Tr*mp was the final straw?)

    • @treesny
      @treesny 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Have you read the original Mallon novel? It's very fine, but what Ron Nyswaner has done to expand and deepen it is incredible. By extending their relationship into the 60s, 70s and 80s, Hawk and Tim become far more complex and rich characters, and the addition of Marcus and Frankie, making Lucy a real person and not just an offstage presence, adding Jackson, altering Mary's storyline entirely... That's not to knock the novel, but it's just the foundation for a far more all-embracing TV series.
