i attempted to my first malkavian character as an accountant for a bank. His madness and the general method to it was numbers, the numbers hold all the answers and it is his job to find out what the numbers mean.
One idea that I've had for a Malk, but haven't really found a table to play with is an ex-rockstar who constantly hears a song in the background. As he refers to it, it is a song so magnificent that it becomes hard to describe. However, through Dementation, he can allow others to temporarily hear what he calls The Melody of Broken Mirrors, though it may drive them crazy for a bit. In addition to constantly hearing the song in the background, he also has synesthesia, which causes him to sometimes see colors with the sounds of The Melody. When these colors form a picture, that is him having a vision of the future.
I’m running a chronicle in which the malkavian primogen is the key go between for the local court and the local changeling community who they call “the neighbors.” Nobody knows why the fae like him or what price he paid in some messed up bargain, but their local champion has a sword made from a ray of sunlight and it makes the vampire’s ability to call in favors with them a scary wildcard.

Cant say they're completely wrong reacting that way to a powerful Malkavian with ties to the fae lol. But I feel that lol. You make the dope npc then through whatever reason the players don't cross paths with them or choose to go chat with them. Heres hoping they do in the future though!
I made a Malkavian NPC who was under the delusion that he was created by God to destroy other vampires. What really freaked the players out was when he repelled several of them by brandishing a cross! Yes, this Malkavian's delusion was so strong that it granted him the merit, True Faith! (This was back in the White Wolf days of VtM. Don't know if they kept merits and flaws for V5.) Or was it a delusion? There was some debate among the players.
Currently playing as a malkavian named River, who is not a... "traditional" malk. She believes she is still very much sane, and very much wishes to cure herself of her curse. Because she's constantly attuned to the Cobweb, which is cranked to max volume for her. The only way she can silence it is by wearing a puppet on one of her hands at all times. Unfortunately for her, the puppets act more like a filter and talk through her with a will of their own, giving voice to her hunger and telling her things *she does not want to know.* All sorts of fun facts, like how much blood an infant has, or that werewolves exist, *or that mages are fighting a war of the moons of Jupiter.* The rest of her coterie think she's absolutely batshit crazy, but River insists time and again that she's sane. It's the puppets! The puppets have a will of their own, I'm not doing ANY of this! PLEASE BELIEVE ME!!!
I want to make a character now who is ex-Sabbat and is trying to bring back Malkav. So he goes around killing any other Malkavian he comes across, in order to undilute the blood. His end goal is to have only one Malkavian left standing, even if it isn't him. He believes at that moment all Malkav will be reborn.
Malks don'yt always have to be comic relief; My own was a combat enginner in the marine corps in the 90's, and when he was turned his ptsd and anxiety stick around forever. He's basically a common, low-ranked soldier, not a looney toon.
True! Which is why I'm glad they pivoted from their older design. While they always had the capability to have some deep explorations of mental health even back in their older incarnations. I'm happy with where Malkavians are today. White Wolf themselves mentioned that it was a common trend to play Malks in a more comedic lens.

He's done enough good, not just for the kindred and kine, but others where he's gained the notoriety to demand he be recognized as Autarkis. Imagine it friendo; A 13th gen Malkavian Antitribu has no idea he's of a sabbat bloodline, but he quote *goddamn hates sabbie freakers* .

I am going to play my first game soon. My Malk was a medium at birth, but didn't know he was. He experienced ghosts from phones, TVs, radios, and the like. This got pulled into his dementaition, so he experiences both the cobweb and a bunch ghosts both talk to him over anything that use a radio signal.
I have a friend who's a Malkavian. She's always yelling at stop signs. And I love the voreman sisters. Janette always hooks me up on the best vitae cocktails. And we did have one heck of a night... But it was only once.
Played a Malkavian in the Cult of Mithras whose bane when activated caused them to believe they were under Mithras's Dominate and this bane forced them to essentially act like they're dominated and chant to Mithras as if speaking to their God, They were a Seer for the Cult, One Of The Heralds Of The Sun and most trusted because he was utterly loyal to Mithras and his followers due to his unique Bane, his Bane was actually titled "Divine Submission" Meaning how it worked was whenever met with a God-like figure, my Malkavian had to submit to them fully, Mithras was the first God they encountered for this unique bane to be found out when it was activated in a Compulsion. Their Premonitions also consisted of Mithraic Imagery and they believed these Premonitions came from Mithras himself as a way to communicate to his followers through My Malkavian after he disappeared during the Fall of London.
Running a "starting Sabbat" game (20th/revised) and got 2 Player Malkavian antitribu and its great. A pyschobilly rocker with is obsessed with dice rolling that's 4th wall breaking, and a failed actor constantly confused for the characters he's played in a shelved sci-fi pilot show (including himself). I'm excited to see how my players do.
My last Malkavian character spent her entire life trying to be a Vaudeville star because she desired love and adoration. When she was embraced, she became completely co dependent with her sire. Careful what you wish for i guess
My first character was a "Normal" Malk who suffered from his narcissistic tendencies. He alwas a chef and only showed his true self when it got shut down
My malkavian (revised) is interesting, I think. She tries to be normal. At the same time, her normal speaking speed is about two to three times faster than normal, she has little control, but a strong connection over the cobweb, so she sometimes get's "possessed" by other malkavians and spurts either nonsense or lore dumbs and lastly, her "reality" changes. Like, she managed to become keeper of elysium and she always said that she will be a prince one day and this is also what she was working towards. then, one night, she woke up and had no memories of that and, from her perspective, was always working towards becomming a sheriff, because she will be a sheriff in the future. Thanks to some help of the prince she also learned presence. by now she mastered it and can use majesty. so, she can just look at you and if she says "bark", you bark, but because you want to please her because omg she is epic/terryfing. i love her lol
I played my malkavian as a version of myself. I'm in my masters program to be a mental health counselor, I have C-PTSD, Bipolar 1, and severe ADHD. In normal life I have to keep myself in line, using my mental health issues to help me with clients (trauma is my specialty). It's nice to imagine how I'd be if i wasn't so much of a control freak. That comes from the fact that every single member in my mother's mother's side has mental illness, ranging from anxiety and depression to schizophrenia and narcissistic personality disorder. We've been trained to "hide our crazy." I was also given my first tarot deck when i was 7 lol. My sister reads palms.

Lol I was wondering where you've been. Also yes, Antedeluvians awaking is absolutely catastrophic. Best analogy I can give is imagine the devastation if one of the Primarchs landed on our Earth. Similar power scaling imo.
I'm gonna be comparing it to V20 specifically here since its the most updated version of the older ruleset. But specifically, its the erasure of unique identity in the pursuit of streamlining/simplification. A bunch of disciplines got axed and melded with others. Instead key powers from existing disciplines got melded into either amalgam powers or just put into different disciplines. Things like Demenation for example for Malkavians. Now being a specific Domination/Obfuscate power rather than an entire discipline. While I understand the reasoning for cutting it. Some are similar enough to meld. Quietus and Thaumaturgy into Blood Magic for example. They *are* different. Thaumaturgy used to have a bunch of paths to make a unique vamp wizard. Quietus was only for making a peak sneaky magic assassin. It was called something different because the Tremere lied and claimed they invented blood magic. Or Oblivion in v5 for both Hecata and Lasombra. Instead of Necromancy and Obtenebration. Again different things. One are literal necromancers. They others channel the abyss and afterlife, not the dead. But thats Wraith the Oblivion lore lol. Also this bleeds into the erasure of bloodlines and minor clans in V5. They have access to different combinations of the unique disciplines for interesting reasons. Its harder to work them in with everything just being scrunched in. Personally, I dont think this even achieves their goal of simplification. Its just removes flavor from clans and takes tools out of the hands of players. It feels like a problem was created to then fix. V5 and V20 have strengths in different camps. V5's is not in character creation imo. Core systems like feeding, humanity, ect? A lot better. Also it does lead to other issues in V5. I played in a Chronicle where just so happened we had a lot of overlap in powers. We had 6 players total. So personally I think if we just had more options we could have avoided that problem entirely. It was only through later leveling that we could actively avoid taking the same powers but its hard when everyone is working with the same kit. If we had unique Disciplines? Not an issue.
@@glueboy yeah I’m intimately familiar with v5’s systems, I was just curious about your opinion and perspective. I personally like the discipline changes, like the mix and match power options, I just wish a few had some more options. From a game design perspective it makes sense because if later sourcebooks want to introduce new powers, they can do that individually within an existing discipline instead of needing to create a whole new discipline with 5 powers and most of them are fluff just to pad out the one power they wanted to introduce. As for the clan identity thing, I like that powers aren’t the main thing to differentiate them, but banes and compulsions, clan culture, history, mindsets, etc. I did think we had too many bloodlines and super-special unique disciplines, but I’d love to see some of them as loresheets like how they did for the Hecata. That’s just my own opinion though, I know not everyone thinks the same way :)
Most kindred siblings are chosen family over literal ones. Part of their new identity since the old one is usually discarded. Just means they were best buddies I guess lol. Also the other brother of Malkav is probably the same way too.
I mean... some do? The Sabbat and many other vampire doomsday cults exist. Though vampire or not they're still people do they don't just lose their instincts to survive. They still got hoprs, dreams, desires, and people they care about.

I don't really play ttrpgs anymore. But if my friends and/or family decided to start a rpg game night i came up with a pretty cool malkavian A malkavian who is afraid of removing his mask. He's a very nice guy but he constantly wears his giraffe mask everywhere. Very chill and loved by the local community as that weirdo who only comes out at night and who works the night shift at a local soup kitchen.
