    *A correction - the truss rod cover is supposed to be put on upside for this model. That is why "Ashba" seems upside down when on traditionally. Weird.

      Normally a stripe like that would be covered with clear lacquer and would be totally smooth.
      With the satin finish they could not top coat it, that is why you can feel the transition between the colors.
      Many vintage muscle cars used adhesive tape stripes for the smaller strips as they were applied at the Dealerships during customer prep. Others with the larger strips were indeed painted.

    As an employee of an auto company that makes muscle cars, I can attest that the ridge is not as common as it used to be, with the clear coats going over that has a tendency to even it out. Back in the day, or if it's a decal, there will be a definite ridge

    There’s a ridge because it wasn’t clear coated like cars . They put a heavy coat of clear and sand and buff until the finish is smooth.

    The thing about doing a mix of satin and gloss finishes is there is always going to be that "line". The only way, that I know of to get rid of it is multiple coats of the clear and buffing it down smooth, which would gloss the satin

    I expect the ridge is due to the mix of gloss and satin.
    I've done a couple of EVH-style paint jobs and you need a ton of clear to cover up the ridges from 3 different colour coats/masking before you can think of polishing.
    For this - my guess it was painted fully gloss black, some clearcoat added to protect it and given a polish.
    THEN mask up and paint it satin grey, with satin clear over the top of that.
    Then the tape is pulled off, leaving a ridge.
    It would look off if you put satin clear over the black to cover the ridge, or gloss clear over the satin grey.
    Not sure about the Ashba symbol though - would need to eyeball it to see when that may have been added.
    Either way - I was not aware of these and I do think they are pretty cool guitars that are actually different to most other LP's, with many custom specs to it.

      I’ve been watching his videos for years and have seen him damage guitars with his handling more times than I can count. He also uses steel wool on guitars all the time which gets tiny metal fragments into the pickups and will kill them over time. I don’t get it.

    • @hkguitar1984
      @hkguitar1984 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I wish he would place a rag under the pickups when he pulls them out. Resting the pickup directly on the top is not something I personally ever do, even with my organically relic 1986 LP Custom.
      To each their own, I've had to stop watching the Master Luthier at Gruhn Guitars because he so roughly handles vintage '59 Les Paul guitars.
      The Gruhn Master Luthier reminds me of a Veterinary Doctor who is rough with animals.

  • @marcdeleon757
    @marcdeleon757 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    With a lot of hot rods that have gloss stripes on a satin finish paint job. You have to lay the glass first to buff it out because they can’t buffet after you lay the satin finish.
    So you will always have that ridge and a lot of people hide it with Pinstriping over the top.

    Way back when on muscle cars typically the racing stripe was there to cut out glare and was of a flat finish with the rest of th he car being a satin to gloss finish. Any car where you saw that had both a gloss finish was one of two reasons. Either it came with a gloss decal or paint as in the Shelby Cobra or someone polished over the usually flat black really stripe. I haven't seen coil cords in awhile.

      I can never get on board with signature models for the most part. Would much prefer more stock models being released with a bigger array of specs. That being said, the Eddie Cochran signature Gretsch 6120 gives me a serious case of GAS

    Hey Charlie thanks as usual love your videos never miss them. And I'm blind so that says a lot lol. My 2017 Gibson I got that new and it had that vanilla smell on the guitar I think it's the lack up. That's what I believe it to be. They must put something in the locker that has that sweet smell.. and as far as you just I just watched your Gibson partnering with Riley investment guitars LOL I don't get it myself. I can't see what kind of return you're going to get either way on five bucks. But yeah you know all my Gibsons have almost doubled in value my 2017 I bought when the 2018s came out as a New Old stock or old new stock whatever the hell you want to call it. And it's not quite double but I seen them going for 2021 you know and mine's and meant shape. So I definitely got a close to doubling on that guitar if I did want to sell it. I'm not the kind of guy to buy the guitar and then sells it. I buy a guitar because I want the guitar and I love the guitar and for whatever reason I wanted that specific model of grand. I haven't felt any desire to sell any of my guitars not that I own a million but I'll be getting another one ordering it I think this week. So considering I had a 30 some idea hiatus between playing guitars. And going blind has something to do with it. So I started again in 2015 I think. And it's been a journey you know playing again without seeing. But it's the more I play the better it gets. I guess muscle memory is truly something that is a thing. That wasn't awkward sentence. Anyway thanks again a long comment as usual for me on just the smell of the guitar lol. Sincerely yours, Bob the blind bedroom guitars

    But the best Gibson player out there today, Charlie Starr of Blackberry Smoke, doesn't have a Signature Series Gibson... WHY?

    This is honestly one of my favorite signatures you have featured on your channel. And I’m not necessarily a fan of DJ. Just a unique signature.

    Best melodic solo - sorry - try Dream Theater's The Spirt Carries On from Scene's From a Memory - that's an amazing melodic solo - if you still have you Ernie Ball Majesty dig it out and try it :)

    Thinks Trogly has a love affair with guitar cases and needs to dedicate a show to cases only. 😆🤘 Okay guys, which will happen first: people colonizing Mars, or Gibson's Quality Control becoming consistent? 🤣

    If it were a car, or just a guitar job done more carefully with more time & expense, you certainly would not feel the border on the stripe. if it were to be a two-tone clear job, the border would be properly buried and it would feel as smooth as any Custom would all the way across. in other arenas techs make great efforts to hide those kinds of deviations. the time is the money.
