  • Perfect day + autonomous drone = test flights!
    Now that I've ironed out some control bugs, I took out Stanley for a proper outdoors test. I am INCREDIBLY pleased with how well he is able to track me around now.

    Wow, crossing the Atlantic!? That's going to be an amazing journey. Can't wait to watch it and see what you come up with. I'm guessing you've seen Sail Drones and what they can do.

    Well done. Looks like Stanley is working pretty smoothly now. Does it have facial i.e. it could distinguish and follow you in a crowd? Or is it just a "this is a face"?
    Looking forward to seeing your solar boat

    Hi Matchstic. I could sugest you as fuel for your new boat project to use plates (or cylinders) of both graphite and zinc (actually the fuel is the zinc) immersed in solt water. They will act together as galvanic element (wet battery) until zinc disolves.

    • @akamatchstic

      That’s a cool idea! Will look into it. My current idea is lithium ion batteries with solar recharge

    Nice job. Can you give us an estimate how many hours you spent on this project, mainly on software setup and tweaking?

    • @akamatchstic
      @akamatchstic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First estimate: A LOT 😂 I started writing the core of my code in December 2021, but didn’t focus on it much until after the build video went live in March 2022. More time went into testing different configurations in the simulator I built, and then on real hardware.
      I only properly got following working smoothly just before filming this aerial session!

    what speaks against the gimble following you so that the drone never loses you?

  • @maazshahid8920
    @maazshahid8920 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've been following you since you started the drone project in your final year. If you look back you have came a long way since then. I'm currently in my 3rd year of my CS degree. If you want someone to help you out with the boat project, I would love to contribute to it.

      Thanks for the offer! At the moment, the boat project is stalled due to needing to fix my 3D printing setup - been getting some terrible warping on the parts I’ve printed for it so far

  • @floris4508
    @floris4508 ปีที่แล้ว

    So, I have one question. Why is Stanley a hexacopter? Were there any other options? And are there any plans to improve S.?
    P.S. Solar-powered electroboat? Wow!

    • @akamatchstic
      @akamatchstic  ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s two answers to that one to be honest!
      First answer: it gives me some extra reliability in the air if a propellor fails. One of my shorts earlier in the year shows one of the motors in a bad state - this happened whilst in the air and I was able to land safely thanks to the built-in redundancy of 6 motors.
      Second answer: the cheapest kit with a PixHawk I could find on eBay was a hexacopter frame 😅
      For further improvements, we’re talking internet connectivity which is needed for the whole “control from over 3000 miles away” video. Other than that, I want to improve the way I attach batteries for flight. Stanley sucks down a lot of watts when running in the follow mode so I want to run with 2 batteries in parallel!

    • @floris4508
      @floris4508 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@akamatchstic Yes, it's true about reliability. And what are your ideas about batteries? Will you look for more productive options? And I also want to ask if the estimated weight gain will affect the quality of the flight? Or does Stanley have a reserve for such a case?
      P.S. Sorry, I just have so many questions! 😄This is an amazing project that first attracted my attention when there was an idea to also create a drone with Jetson Nano on board.

    • @akamatchstic
      @akamatchstic  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@floris4508 haha keep the questions coming! I’ve picked up a 6000mah 4S LiPo recently which is likely going into the boat project now, so I’ll continue using my two Nano-tech 4S batteries. Should hopefully double flight time to around 12 minutes or so.
      Weight wise, yeah that is a concern. He is able to hover at less than 50% throttle so there should be some overhead I can use. It’s not like he’s doing FPV-style flights anyway during the follow modes 😅

    • @floris4508
      @floris4508 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@akamatchstic As for battery, it's a real mess.
      So, hello again) I have another serious question related more specifically to the jetson nano. I hope you have had a similar experience and can help.
      In general, I recently purchased a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ camera module and am trying to connect it to my computer. I entered the command "sudo lspci" and the camera was not detected. I don't even know what could be the problem. Everything is installed correctly, but it may be that this camera simply does not fit. I've tried a lot and I can't even imagine what went wrong. I hope you have an idea about this.
