Thanks! I'm sure we'll get to a recipe for their distant relations, but I'm a big fan of 30k and would like to provide at least one recipe for each legion.
Thank you for this video, I have been looking for inspiration on how to paint my HH DA army swiftly and consistently. This method will help me get through the back log
Just want to say thanks again for this video and the Night Lord one. I think I'll be basing my schemes around these two videos! Great step by step process. Even got my first oil paints because of it!
Another great job...was interesting to see how much you thinned down the white Tamiya... I don't think I do mine that much, but will definitely try that and see how that goes...Cheers guys!
Great video! Two things though: Could you up the volume on your end? You're speaking is excellent, but its really quiet. Second thing: can we see this new doggo?
If you were to take it a step further, with edge highlights, which colours would you look towards? Really ace tutorial(s). Been looking forward to this one.
Great tutorial, many thanks! I am struggling with the iconography and the squad markings and things. For example where in the six "wings" are the battleline marines located? And do they use the nattlefiels role marking of the battleline marines or the icon of their "wing" on their right pauldron? What about, lets say the apothecarys? I read that each wing has apothecarys in them. Do they wear their apothecary marking or their "wings" icon on their left pauldron? And is it possible that the "wing" marking goes to the left pauldron and the battlefield role marking on the right? And well the same question applies for almost any unit and marking type haha
The DA's organization is meant to be byzantine and confusing in nature but stick to basic markings where they usually go and wing icons where ever you feel they naturally go. Join the 30k Dark Angel's Group on Facebook for a good deal of reference material from other players. They have some really cool schemes and conversions as well. Also go listen to Occulus Imperia's video on the first legion's organization and structure for a very well explained disposition on how and why they do things.
If I was looking to do a similar thing with a more red tint, for Blood Angels Death Company or chaplains, could I use Flesh Tearers Red in the black contrast mix instead of Dark Angels Green?
So I'm new to oil washes. As I understand it, some thinners require a varnish before the wash, or it can damage the paint, correct? But this combination of W&N Oil and Sansador avoids that, or would it still be smart to pre-varnish? And if so, could that be matte varnish? I don't have access to gloss atm. TLDR: Will it be safe to do the basecoat, matte varnish, and then oil wash with this specific (Burn umber + Sansador) combo?
Mineral spirits won't damage your acrylic paint. As long as your paint is a solid, dry layer before you apply them. Gloss varnish before hand helps the oil wash run into the recesses and makes it easier to wipe off raised areas.
@@cultofpaint thanks for the fast response on an old vid! still sounds smart to gloss then, I guess I will get some. How long should I give oil washes to fully dry? Edit: Also, is it ok to brush on matte for the final finish once the oil wash is dry, or should it be spray?
I am looking at painting up some pre-heresy era DA based on your brilliant tutorial (many thanks!) but I don’t own an air brush. Could I spray prime the black then dry brush the under highlight or you recommend highlighting over the black with a white spray can?
Probably a little late to the party, but I'm currently working on this scheme I'm just having a hard time getting it completely right with the black/green mix. Do you airbrush it on the entire model or just the white areas?
This tutorial is amazing! A friend and I have both started 30k dark angels because of this. One quick question if I may. Why didn’t you paint the metal trim before the gloss varnish stage? Is there a particular reason for this that I’m missing? Thanks!
That’s amazing to hear!! Make sure to tag us in any progress pics, I’m loving painting up some 30k DA. I left the metals until after the varnish stage as I didn’t want to change their finish. So gloss-decals-satin. Then I could decide what to do with the metals. As long as you mainly handle the minis by their bases you won’t run into any problems.
I'm thinkin of stealing that base coat for my heresy army but want to go much cleaner, crisper finish, as the 1st legion take pride in all thier gear (in my head cannon), what highlights would you recommend?
I mean it's free, so you don't have to steal!? Just grab an off white for edge highlights, a GW or Vallejo green/blue/grey off white would all work well.
I'm really struggling to get the black templars/dark angels green contrast part working. Everytime I try to apply it just obliterates the white highlights and I just end up with a flat black model again. I don't suppose you have any tips for that stage
@@cultofpaint thanks i suspected it might be something like that. Fortunately because the layers are so thin I can just start again from air black and try again
Lovely scheme mate, really nice smooth interesting black, couple of questions. Do you think white ink would work in place of the tamiya white? And Is that winged sword decal on the left shoulder not upside down?
I much prefer Tamiya over white ink for preshade. But if you like working with the ink go for it, it achieves the same thing. And I promise the pads are on right, always double check that kind of thing before facing the wrath of the internet :)
great video, you guys are making me wanna do every chapter... dont suppose theres a cool silver metal scheme or true metal scheme in the works at all ???? (pretty please)
Refreshing to see the Dark Angels painted in the Heresy livery instead of the Caliban Dark Green. Another excellent video in your series.
Thanks! I'm sure we'll get to a recipe for their distant relations, but I'm a big fan of 30k and would like to provide at least one recipe for each legion.
Absolutely great, and so refreshing that you leave the mistakes and corrections in there. Much more realistic!
Thanks! I’d doubt anyone who says they don’t mess something up on every mini they paint!
Love your work, I now have new ideas for my heresy era Dark Angels to try out so many thanks.
Nice one, enjoy and tag us in your results!
Another great tutorial guys. Thank you - I'll be using this for my Blood Angel Destroyers for sure!
Thanks bud, will work well for them.
Excellent tutorial. I really like your calm and considered explanations - perfect for learning.
Hi Jonathan, glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for the feedback, it's good to hear!
Thank you for this video, I have been looking for inspiration on how to paint my HH DA army swiftly and consistently. This method will help me get through the back log
Awesome. That’s the goal of these recipe series!
Another fantastic tutorial guys! I’m really keen to see your HH blood angels scheme personally!
Are you tempted!?!

Just want to say thanks again for this video and the Night Lord one. I think I'll be basing my schemes around these two videos! Great step by step process. Even got my first oil paints because of it!
You’re very welcome, thanks for watching. And enjoy those oil paints, they are a lot of fun and totally changed my hobby.
Another great job...was interesting to see how much you thinned down the white Tamiya... I don't think I do mine that much, but will definitely try that and see how that goes...Cheers guys!
You can thin it so much, it’s great.
This is great! I’m definitely going to be using this for my Stormwing Army! -Jesse
Awesome, look forward to listening to your guys thoughts on the book!
Another masterpiece,bravo Maître !
Thanks very much!
Great video!
Two things though: Could you up the volume on your end? You're speaking is excellent, but its really quiet.
Second thing: can we see this new doggo?
Yeah the audio was too quiet in this I agree. Will fix for next time! And yeah I’m sure she’ll pop up now and again.
Your videos are so good, I really love them!
Thanks a lot, glad you’re enjoying them.
it's a very nice work. i'll do exatly this for my Dark angels army soon :)
Great, I'd love o see it done across an army, tag us in any social posts if you like.
This is great im thinking i may use it for a black shields force.
Loving the channel! Henry Andy could you please do a space wolf please.
We’ll be doing them for both 30k and 40k before too long.
@@cultofpaint cant wait to see what you guys do thanks dudes
I’ve gotten some really good results putting contrast paint thru my airbrush as a filter.
Yeah they work well
Lovely scheme!
Thanks!
Arguably the best 30k dark angel I've seen. Keep up the fab work! How would you upscale this to larger models?
Thanks very much! I've just done 3+ hours videos of scaling it up on a drednought over on our Patreon www.patreon.com/cultofpaint
Another great tutorial! Would love to see how you do 40k Dark Angel’s
Thanks! We will definitely get to the 40k DA before too long.
Awesome, another great Heresy tutorial ;-)
Glad you liked it!
Awesome video!
Really good video again.
Thanks very much.
If you were to take it a step further, with edge highlights, which colours would you look towards?
Really ace tutorial(s). Been looking forward to this one.
I played around with using Vallejo model colour pale blue on some of my test minis.
Oh yes! Thank you! Awesome
You’re welcome!
That's a great result, love these tutorials
Thanks. Should look great across an army.
I was happy to find a tutorial for my new hobby, the horus heresy but I have no idea how to do this without an airbrush ;(
This works great for consecrators and maybe guardians of the covenant too!
It certainly would!
Great tutorial, many thanks!

Agreed, very hard to know. I guess that could be the point? Maybe try a Dark Angels group on FB?

So for the battle damage we have a totally different asset up my sleeves.... *woof*
Horus Heresy Raven Guard from Forgeworld next??? :)
If I was looking to do a similar thing with a more red tint, for Blood Angels Death Company or chaplains, could I use Flesh Tearers Red in the black contrast mix instead of Dark Angels Green?
Sure. Will probably look like a really heavily shaded red though.
so, 1 part thinner 3 parts contrast mix?
Gonna use this on my Ebon Keshig, would you still add the green or use another colour if you were doing them? thanks.
I think this would work great on the Keshig, the green will look nice against the reds in the rest of the army.
@@cultofpaint Yeah. I am going with red mars bases too. Nice contrast, thanks.
Would you use the same method to paint a vehicle?
Yes.
very nice!
Thanks!

This scheme would look great on primaris DA I bet 🤔 I’m tempted.
Consecraters? Definitely!
Cult of Paint Or Angels of Vengeance.

What would you use in place of the contrast paints?
I wouldn’t. But if you can make a thin black and green glaze then that’s what you’re after.
Whenever I break a model or my cat knocks one off I call that realistic battle damage 😂
Time saving technique right?!?
Probably a little late to the party, but I'm currently working on this scheme I'm just having a hard time getting it completely right with the black/green mix.
Do you airbrush it on the entire model or just the white areas?
Aim at the white areas, a little overspray is fine, then go in with just black to tidy up if needed.
@@cultofpaint much appreciated, thank you! I'll give it a try again tomorrow 🙌
When you talk about mix I.e. 6:1 is it like 6 parts water to 1 part paint or 6 parts paint to 1 part water.
For the Tamiya. 6:1 thinner to paint.
Looking foreward for a black tank
There will be a black dred on Patreon soon.

Are the checker decals from the FW decal sheet or another company? Thanks!
I think these ones were from the ultramarines sheet. But I’ve a bunch from different companies I found on eBay.

Really boring answer but it's probably going to be thin your mix more, and dry the layer with a hairdryer before adding more.

Wouldn't the Fallen then have black armour instead of green, since the green is post-heresy? Before I start painting my "Fallen" army.
Anyone tried black contrast airbrushed over a Leadbelcher, or similarly darkened silver/steel?
Kinda like value sketching but with an airbrush?
Sure. Also a nice way to demonstrate another approach to painting black.

Haha yes there is actually! Both on a marine and something more....nefarious.
@@cultofpaint cant wait :)
Looks great thank you! Why didn’t you use tamiya flat black? Just asking because you guys always sing praises of the tamiya flat white :)
It has a very matte finish and can leave a texture on the surface. It’s a great paint but not for this job.
Quick question: is the xf-2 the enamel or the acrylic one?
Acrylic
Nice
Thanks.
Good Dog
*taking notes* ...Use puppies for battle damage...
Would've to s a non air brush version
Here’s some hairy brush black and red recipes we did m.th-cam.com/video/sRRn26_NwsI/w-d-xo.html

This is great, but I can hardly hear you at all
