I still have mine from my childhood, and I loved this thing so much. I played on it all the time too. Mine jsut needs new batteries, but I still have it.
That's super cool you held onto it! I've gotten a handful of similar comments from people who had them as kids, which is great to know! Be sure to pop some fresh batteries into yours and thanks so much for checking out the video!
I remember seeing this at Toys R Us back around 1995 when I was around 9-10 years old. I wanted one really bad not really knowing much about it. One weekend my street growing up had a yard sale, and I begged my parents to setup a table with them selling old comics, old sega and gameboy games. At the time I remember seeing it for $80, but had some money left over from my bday, so I only needed to come up with around $40 to get an IR 7000 Communicator. Well, I ended up doing pretty well at the yard sale and made more than enough to get it. My dad took me to Toys R Us that weekend and to my surprise it was on sale for $19.99! 😮 I was so excited because I had a bunch of money left over to buy more sega and gamegear games along with it. This little device was so cool and I feel now it was a little ahead of its time. I used it for storing contacts, creating avatars for the contacts, playing the battle game, and used it as a calculator too. The only downside, I didn’t know any other kids with one so I never had the chance to send secret messages. But overall it was a cool little device, and I felt kinda cool that I was the only one out of my friends who had one and saved up and earned some money to get one! Thanks for uploading this video! Really brought me back to when I was a kid again!
Very cool story! We're the exact same age so I totally remember the money struggles back then. $80 was a huge price tag! Super awesome that you were able to save the money and then snag it for $19.99! That had to feel great. The device was so ahead of its time for sure; I've heard from multiple people that had one back in the day that their main complaint was that no other kids had them. It's such a shame, because they would have driven parents/teachers/etc. nuts if these caught on and kids tapped into their full potential. Thanks for sharing and for checking out the channel!
Im going to be going down a rabbit hole with these, I remember there being different versions of these type of devices from various companies. some were advertised as able to be universal remotes controls as well as over the air messengers. some even had a cool selection of games! those were the days man!
Awesome! I'm sure you're going to dig up some pretty cool ones. There were so many different options all with pretty unique features for back then. The Sega one is so peak 1990s when they just threw everything at the wall and saw what stuck. Thanks for checking out the video!
I got one of these for Christmas in 1995. I was low-key disappointed it had no TV remote (in spite of having an IR blaster for the chat features), but I still had fun with it. I eventually found another one at Kmart on clearance in 1996 for like $15, and gave it to my brother. We had fun with the chatting and battle mode, but messages took a long time to send. You had to hold the two units still and pointed line-of-sight to each other, or else you get errors.
Bummer to hear that the messages took a while to send and you had to keep the units so close together. That's pretty awesome you both were able to experience these back when they were new though. It must have been pretty cool, at least initially before the appeal wore off 😂. Thanks for checking out the video!
I had this but none of my friends did so it was pretty much useless as anything other than a calculator. I password protected it and some idiot kid stole it, so good job stealing a brick.
Yeah, it would definitely be much more fun back in the day if multiple kids had these to mess around in class with! Bummer that yours got stolen though.
