Definitely not ideal but I just can't mod my first Top Loader console 😂
@@retrogameattic i grew up with it and it was fine.. now I'm old and spoiled. Lol
Same here haha. Thanks for checking out the channel!
Very informative video! Thanks for sharing this!
Glad you enjoyed! It makes some of those rarer games more accessible!
Nice and to the point video, I didn't know an emulator was easy to install on a wii✨. I do have a modded wii, with usb stick to play games from.
Thank you very much! USB stick works great as well! I use one to load WiiWare WAD files.
@retrogameattic wii ware seems fun!
I like this issue, great MGS cover. I’m a big fan of EGM magazine.
It's a super cool cover! Same here, EGM was top tier with such great care and attention to detail in each issue. It's bummer that they're online-only now but I'm happy they're still around. Thanks for checking out the video!
@ I got into collecting them, I have issues 01-236.
@gamingtv394 nice collection!
I was hoping to see the soldered wires at least as an option, but otherwise, a great video!
I should have opted for soldering in the wires but I chickened out 😂. Glad you enjoyed the video though and hope it helps!
@retrogameattic it did. I literally did it last night but while the screen works well the colour modes cycle automatically. I should have paid more heed to the sensor placement ;)
Pete!!! Bro, thank you! This saved me $$$ buying another GameCube. I've had mine since 2002.
Happy to help and glad it worked out! It might not be the most permanent fix but I’m going on a year since my adjustment and my GameCube is still going strong. Best of luck and thanks for checking out the channel!
Iggys wreckin balls sux I just sold it I just couldn’t get into it
It’s a hard one to get into for sure. I think I’m blinded by nostalgia on it since I saw so many ads for it back then 😂. Thanks for checking out the video!
Tales of Destiny 2 is worth a bunch of money not really the first though
Good to know! They seem like pretty enjoyable JRPGs
Little did anyone know in September of ‘98 that Metal Gear Solid would be the greatest game of all time.
We went from platformers and basic JRPGs to a game with substance. It showed us that video games could be an experience rather than repetitively pushing buttons. Games no longer had to be simplistic. It marked the advent of gaming potential. They could involve cinematography, story boarding, screenplays, voice acting, plot development, grit, and everything that created consummate gaming experiences. It was the first time anyone actually felt an emotional connection with game bosses. There would be no Deus Ex, Mass Effect 2, or Read Dead Redemption 2, the pinnacle of elite gaming without Kojima’s 1998 masterpiece.
Wonderfully said, I couldn't agree more! The game was such a disrupter at release and really laid the groundwork for so many different games/genres to come. Thanks for checking out the video!
Thanks! Always fun to browse these mags. I was working at Staples in ‘98 and was more into my PC with Voodoo 2, but still had consoles. Vigilante 8 is pretty fun. Im surprised Quartermann was still there. I foolishly tossed out all my EGMs, Game Pros, PC Gamer, and Nintendo Powers in the 90s every few months. I was as living in the moment. I still want to live in those moments as far as entertainment goes. At least there are a lot of scans online now.
Bummer about your old gaming mags, I would have never guessed that they'd be so much fun to go through all these years later. I find plenty of overpriced old Nintendo Power issues on my local FB Marketplace, but rarely do I see any other magazines. It's so nice having the option to browse through old scans on the Internet Archive!
@ Exactly, I never thought back then they would be so precious in the future. I was on the internet early, but didn’t once think it would ever replace magazines. I eventually got 1-249 for Nintendo Power again before the prices went insane. I look through one every couple of weeks. It takes years to cycle through them all and by the time I circle back I forget a lot so it seems new again. Thanks for the new old memories with this one!
@@RetroGamingNookwhy not go for complete 285 of Nintendo Power, you’re so close to complete.
That I think is the solution I need to fix my cube but jesus christ too damn many screws and I don't got the tools to do all that!
You can snag a cheap precision screwdriver set off of Amazon with everything you need for less than $10 shipped. The lens adjustment is totally manageable if you take your time. Good luck with however you decide to go!

I have done this before but now even though it reads, sometimes when spinning it makes a sound like it's shaking and displays an error message during gameplay. Only happens with "heavy" games like Re4, RE remake, zelda Twilight, Geist, you get the idea. With games like smash, mario kart, fzero, it works with no problems. I believe a further calibration (with a tester) is needed.
Depending on how thorough you want to be it might be worth your while to replace your optical drive or find a replacement console. Best of luck!
@retrogameattic yup. After opening and cleaning it completely, I have to conclude that it requires an optical drive replacement. (Potentiometer is calibrated and motor spins as always but no reading). For now, I will go the picoboot way while I study how to replace said drive. Great video to start/understand dissasembling though.
@richyroa Good call on picoboot and best of luck with the drive replacement. I’ll probably make a video of the process when my drive inevitably fails as well.
@@retrogameattic That would be great. I will install picoboot today, seems like an easy welding work. Lens replacement? not so much. Will wait for your video about it :D
@@retrogameattic Hey man, just installed picoboot. I don't have much experience doing those welding works, but it was a clean an easy job to do. After the mod, and using my own dumps, the gamecube seems to work very similarly as before (temperature and "disk reads"). Using a sandisk SD currently and no problems. Still considering replacing the lens in the future though.
so 2 things, one, I bet if you got an airport extreme you could hook that up to your modem/router and it would probably see that fine. If you didn't want to do it wifi, you could probably connect your ethernet to the airport and it would work. again. The other thing, is nowadays finding a browser that will navigate the modern web. I recently got an old blue and white g3 minitower going and found Classilla (sp?) for 9.2.2 works, and in osx (tiger is the max) InterwebPPC is dencent. I think it's possible to compile another browser from the source code in osx but it's easier to have a browser that just works. I watched a few different videos from ActionRetro and he got LInux and OpenBSD going on various older macs such as this one. I don't know all the games that are ported for BSD or Linux but I'm sure there are plenty that may run. the hard part these days I also found, is getting a *nix OS that is still supported for 32bit PPC processors. so OpenBSD, NetBSD, Adelie Linux, and a few others work. Even if the OS has been stopped getting full-updates, certain versions of lInux have community versions that are still going. I think Debian is once such case. Anyway, although these machines can't quite be daily drivers, it depends on what your intentions are. I have a 2018MBP I use every day, and a couple PC's instorage that are not too old, that will run windows or any version of the *nix's. I also have a tangerine iMac in the garage that I hope the fall it took in storage elsewhere didn't destroy it, and I can get it running again for fun.
Nice work! You picked it up for a solid price! It's a fun little remake for sure, it's a shame it wasn't released worldwide. I hope you enjoy the game and thank you so much for checking out the channel!
Cant beat retro gaming!..this one is very Outrun! 👍
For sure! It's pretty unforgiving in the later levels but it's a ton of fun!
1/8th of a turn worked for me too, thanks so much <3
No problem and glad it worked for you! Thanks so much for checking out the channel!
Worked for me!
Awesome, glad it worked for you! Game on!
You do realize about 97% of people have zero clue how to do this even with your video right? So here's a better fix when that happens you ready.......BUY A NEW GAME
Younger me, having no access to soldering equipment, just pried the battery off the metal brackets and put a new one in there, worked for like 9 years
Wow, that's great that it held up for that long. Definitely a solid option if you're in a pinch.
Fantastic tutorial! Learned something new today. And you did pretty good on the soldering. I'd have ya as a helper. Take it easy Brother!
Thank you very much! Happy to hear that I'm getting a little bit better. I think it might be time to invest in a decent soldering iron setup.
Great tutorial. My Pokemon Yellow died last year... I need to buy the proper size that you mention(1616) as I only have a bundle of 2032s for NES games. They work, but the fit is way too snug. Flux makes everything easier!
Thank you very much and best of luck on your copy of Pokemon Yellow! I'm going to use more flux going forward for sure!
I’ve had a pre owned slim since 2010 worked up until 2021 man I loved that thing just purchased a fat ps2 with a modded hard drive I’m definitely gonna play the hell out of that thing
Awesome! You should get plenty of years out of your replacement PS2. Thanks for checking out the video!
I really cannot make a judgement based on the footage. The fact that white balance was off because of auto white balance makes me think shutter speed was also variable for the Space Fox samples. So I ask. Was the screen IRL as same as in the Super Mario World samples?
Yes, the screen was captured IRL in the same fashion for all games. The camera shutter speed was set to 60 so as to reduce flicker while recording.
I have a the controller the same as you but the color is yellow red blue and green instead of purple and when I play super smash bros brawl it doesn’t work, do you know a fix??
Is it an official Nintendo-branded (Super Famicom) one or a third party?
@@retrogameattic idk but my dad bought me it with a snes and it has the nintendo logo engraved in the back
@@Heaven_LogIn It sounds like the SNES classic controller isn't supported in Brawl then. I would just opt for a GameCube Controller or Wii Classic Controller and you should be all set.
Can i change the Language? I bought mine from Japan and the Setting is japanese… 😢
Unfortunately, there is no way to change the language setting 😢
@@retrogameattic Thanks for your answer 😊
The black/cyan/white screen issue happens with my Pokemon Yellow. If you press down on the ROM chip very hard, it'll boot up for a little while. But clearly it needs a reflow. Thanks for this.
Hopefully a reflow does the trick! Best of luck!
@@retrogameattic Did it right after I watched. 16 hours later and it's still booting. I consider that a success!
Awesome, glad it worked!
Totally worked for me!!! Thank you for your video. Easier than I expected.
Thanks for checking out the video and glad I could help! Game on!
I was going to try to repair mine by watching this video but way to much work involved so I’m just gonna pay someone to do these that repairs consoles for a living because if I tried, I’ll get it apart and not be able to put it back together or wind up breaking it more
I totally understand, it can get a little tricky at times and probably not worth it if you're not super comfortable. If you're hiring someone, it might make sense to have them replace the entire optical disk drive while they have the console apart. Good luck!
Me and my stepdad had just done it, it wasn’t that bad actually
@@WayToFrostyy Nice! Glad it worked out!

Can you recommend a crt that isn’t going for $200+ ……
I recommend staying diligent in browsing Craigslist/FB marketplace/etc. for free or cheap ones. I find crazy priced ones locally pretty regularly but also come across free ones as well. If you don’t want to wait for a free one, I’d recommend a flatscreen CRT from brands not as recognizable as Sony, such as Sanyo, JVC, Toshiba, etc. People might price them cheaper if you’re lucky and they’re pretty comparable in quality to the Trinitrons. I snagged a free 27” curved Trinitron locally since I’ve made this video so there is still hope out there! Otherwise, you should hopefully come across a fairly priced model with a bit of luck and patience. Thanks for checking out the video!
Slim was faster than fat on PS2 games, but you didn't acknowledge it at the end, only talking about one game it didn't load. Not sure why.
It’s a mystery 👻
It's pronounced "bond eye", you uncultured swine. Great video though.

(As I type this on an IPad Pro with 2 desktop iMacs in the other room. Can’t wait to get it online!
