- In today's video I travelled to Copenhagen to meet my new coach Victor Smangs to get my full current physiology tested including Vo2 max, calculation of my lactate threshold (LT1+LT2) and oxygen consumption in the working muscles which made for some interesting findings. The results from this testing will be used by my coach moving forward to tailor a individualised training plan for my marathon goals towards the end of the year.
I decided not to crop this video down into the usual 10-15 minute piece because I personally learnt lots from this discussion with sports scientist, Mads Taersboel, who undertook this test and clearly has years of expertese in this field- that I'm sure you may find of value too. If you enjoyed this content please leave a like, subscribe to the channel and feel free to drop any questions down below. Again a big thanks to Mads and Victor as both gave up their time and knowledge purely for the success of the content as well as there investment in me as an athlete. I would encourage you to both follow them on instagram for much more content on this style of training.

Ben, your channel just hit a new PB with this episode! SO outstanding: It was like a short-course not only in what all this data means, but in how to put it into practice in training--and why it can be helpful (if collected, interpreted and applied intelligently). I learned so much, and the 50-odd minutes went by like THAT. Educational long-form content like this is so valuable, and I really appreciate your sharing this with us! More, please?!
That man can talk! It totally didn't feel like an almost hour long video, and wasn't too hard to understand. Very interesting.
I tried to crop the video down but I just couldn’t. Too much value 🫡
@@BenIsRunning Thanks Ben for putting this up for us!
This is such an excellent breakdown of the testing and the correlation between the values and then the suggested training improvements. Thanks for the long form share!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Yeah better to hear real experts on this matter than pseudo experts doing 10sec Tiktok about these topics.
This is the best TH-cam video I’ve ever seen in regards to explaining data driven training. Thanks for sharing this Ben. 👍🏼
Time to NEVER get my VO2 max professionally tested so I can say mines higher than Ben’s based on my watch’s terrible guessing.
What does your watch say your vo2 max is?
My watch says i have a 65 so i guess ill keep that delusion that my vo2 max is higher than his
this seems like the right move 😂
I’m almost 52 years old, and according to my watch, my VO2 max is higher than my age, but just barely. Anyway, I am proud of my numbers, because I have worked very hard to get where I’m at, but I know I still have some work to do.
I got mine tested in the lab twice and both times it was actually way better than what my watch predicted (70 and 69 vs the watch's 52-57). Just saying, lab testing can go both ways ;) (it didnt help me run any faster though, ref my shitty watch prediction)
Full points for Victor's moustache. Ben, you've got some catching up to do with the styling! hahahah
I try😂 Don’t think I can ever rival that masterpiece
The vo2 max discussion and Frodeno vs Blumentfelt discussion was eye opening. Looking forward to more of this kind of videos. Keep up the good work
Yes! A long video with the best TH-cam content, ben you give much inspiration while the training is hard , Thanks a lot!
Enjoy! It’s a lengthy one but I hope some can take away as much from it as I did :)
His VO2 Max was measured at 61, you're welcome guys
Thanks for helping avoid the very long in the tooth click bait title.
Thanks. 61 is not low.
It's low for the paces he can run relatively
@@froggerabc The title isn’t click bait. Ben runs sub 15 minute 5ks and a 2:24 marathon, his VO2 Max should be much higher than 61
Yeah, in comparison, I've been tested at 66.7 and I've never broken 17 for 5K. Guess I have horrible efficiency.
The fact that you have only been running since 2019 is insane! You're doing great!
What on earth is that balloon thing haha nice one Ben, excited to see these future Marathons with all the smart training ahead.
Would also like to know!
man that's great, proper running science lecture! will come back to it to make sure all the info is registered but the expression on your face throughout the whole thing is priceless😅
Great take away's here Ben, what stood out for me other than your incredible potential, is the complexity of the human body & how the same metric value for one individual can't really be compared to another and can in fact be completely different for another. Then the way we attain efficiency is so individualized across so many different metrics . ............. It's fascinating and crazy all at the same time.
Thank you so much for being willing to and taking the time to post this for all of us
Nice to see a video longer than 20 mins. Should do some more of these. Sometimes I just play and listen while running.
Congratulations on hitting 100k subs. You are a big deal now ;). No but I appreciate the content throughout the years!. Keep going strong and stay healthy!
Thanks mate 😂
Love the geeky content! Nice one Ben
Cheers max! Plenty more to come I’m sure 👌🏼
can’t wait for more of this 👌
That is an insightful watch, for that comparison of the data between Victor and you. Two different athletes who started later in life. Looking forward to seeing those long progressive sessions.
Loved this data-focused video, Ben! Damn, that heat looked brutal though =D
This video was so educational! The analysis of your running metabolism and the comparison of the tri-athletes was revelatory! I love this uber nerdy content and as a 44 y/o who only started running 3 years ago, recently became a dad, has a job and wants to get as quick as i can before i shuffle of my mortal coil, this is gold! I'd also be really intrested in hearing about the wind bag that was suggested...
Love the channel, the lack of ego, i hope you crush your goals and that your moustache goes more handlebar/el bandito! 🤜🏼🤛🏻
The best episode on your channel. Just wow! The part about Vo2 max vs efficiency should be mandatory for all endurance athletes to learn.
Good thing you came to Scandinavia to learn it as it was there they really started using this type of data.
Kristian Blummenfelt (as mentioned in the video) and Jacob Ingebritsen are two «data driven» athletes from Norway
As a 60+ year old, I would love to do a test like this once or twice a year, until I drop dead one day.
Would be some awesome data.
This was a great video!
I reckon it's agood idea to get some coaching advice. From personal experience, the main problem with being a self coached runner is not in laying down a longe term training proramme but that it is too tempting to alter the programme after a disappointing race or even a couple of sessions that don't go well. A coach helps you put these things in perspective and makes it easier to stick to the plan. The added benefit of testing like you went through is that the programme can be based on accurate, detailed knowledge of your current strengths and weaknesses as a runner.
Great video, Ben, thanks a lot for this!
Speaking about running in the heat... I am on holiday in Greece where there is currently a heatwave of 41-42 degrees C..
Went for a 10K early this morning with the temperature around 36C under the sun and around 100m of elevation.
The relative effort number in Strava was the same with my last 32K long run at 15C back home. I felt this 10K more tired than 32K...
Crazy don't you think? 😅😅😅🤢🤢
Great video overall and such brilliant explanations from Mads, I really feel like he was able to explain high level concepts at a simple level. It will be interesting to see another test(s) an analysis in the future.
Thanks Ben for sharing this video and your data. It’s really inspiring and I hope you will share much more about your training plan towards Berlin. I am doing Berlin myself so look forward to see how you plan to structure your training. Keep up the good work!
Wow, thanks for sharing this, Ben! Loved to listen the insights offered here. Had to watch this in one go, so interesting!
Super interesting stuff, much appreciation to you Ben for putting it together and so glad to hear Mads amazing knowledge. Exciting times ahead, good luck with the training Ben, can’t wait to see the results.
I never considered that Vo2 max testing could be done outside of a lab. Really interesting!
1 hour video before my Friday run, let's go!
Same! 😊
Need to watch this more than once but learnt a lot. Thanks Ben and the other 2 👍
Super interesting video, I highly appreciate that you did not cut it short, this way everyone could understand the big picture. Maybe would you be able to provide me with a link to that ballon thing? Thank you!
Thanks, Ben! Amazing insights and behind the scenes info. Both Victor and Mads seem super knowledgeable, hope this will elevate your running still further. Love the long video format! Wish you great running!
Great episode - as much detail on why we run at the different thresholds as I've heard anywhere! Intuitively I also think I need more volume at a lower pace to improve, I really need a lab test having watched this 😳
what a banger! love the analisis and all the insight there!
Congratulations on 100k! Nobody deserves it more! Keep up the amazing content Ben!
Excellent content/discussion, in particular the bits about importance of efficiency and as a Moxy user I enjoyed the 41 minute mark (muscular O2 extraction/utilization). I have a similar MO2 profile where I can wring out nearly all the O2 available, my aerobic base is my biggest limitation currently.
Thank you for sharing this Ben!
Interestingly, when I was in my mid-late 20's my VO2 max was between 76 - 81 ml/kg, yet I never reached national level, as although I could push myself to the limit I never had the psychological strength; when it mattered I folded ! I could win or post half decent times when it did not matter. I ran sub 50 10 mile and a 4:00 mile which was not good enough. Expressing a personal view, data driven training is an illusion which is vanity driven, The Emperor's New Clothes. Look at mid - long distance club runners 40 years ago and so many were running sub 30 minute 10k pace and mostly worked full time. Doing that testing in those conditions was pretty pointless as so much energy and hence heart rate etc will be used to cool down and change vascular peripheral resistance among other parameters. Running efficieny I believe is a key to running fast.
Great 😮 how did you get such a high vo2 max what did your training look like ?
@@nauding1035 I'm no expert, but if what I have read is true, then VO2max is highly genetics dependent. You are born with a natural range (some people higher than others) and training will allow you to get to the highest part of your own range.
It's a little sad to think of it this way, but most Elite Level athletes can be determined from birth.
I run for years and I have vo2 max of 55 I started from 40 so with hard work you can reach your goals
@@DerekGreen123it’s why the old adage of “if you want to be a professional athlete, choose your parents wisely” is often repeated. Genetics be key.
Super interesting both the testing and the discussion afterwards.
Super interesting video, especially hearing how they apply all the stats gathered in training etc 👌
Interesting video, Ben. Good to know what you can improve on and that there's potential to get even better 👍
Found this very interesting. Links in to the video James did analysing your running style. Shows how efficient your technique is. My daughter has been running a year and she was tested and came out at 56. Obviously nowhere the times that you run and prob never will. As the tester said it is just a number which doesn't relate to your times or ability. Really looking forward to seeing your journey with a coach.
Very interesting insights, thanks for this special content and congrats on your 100k. Is it possible to get this balloon?😊 I ´ m excited for your next training vlogs 🥸
A geeky super interesting video. A lot to think about! It does show the importance of working on all aspects but it was really interesting to hear, you are ok on those, let's focus on the other areas that can see most improvement. Great!
Love these longer videos. Great work Ben ‼️
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching
That guys moustache is absolutely criminal
You've been hit by // Víctor's moustache / smooth criminal 🕺🕺
I find inspiration and training ideas in your content. Thank you, Ben.
Great video really insightful made me think about my new training block and to mix it up more. Thank you !
I'm not an elite but I enjoy your videos. I'm from Norfolk, when will you attempt to break the Great Yarmouth parkrun record?
I’m not elite either even though I certainly have aspirations to reach that level :) parkrun records are no more I believe so never 😂
@@BenIsRunning I think you're definitely heading the elite way! Err... it would have been great to see you trying that one. 😀 Never mind. Keep up with the good stuff! All the best
Great video! Anyone curious about the balloon thing for training your lungs, I think it is called: Breathe Way Better Isocapnic Respiratory Training System
Great informative video loved it.. have a feeling this coach could to take you another level.. look foward to ypur next in regular conditions
Awesome video. Our VO2 max is quite similar, but pace wise you are in a completely different league. Breathing heavy in a comfortable position and then holding your breath untill you feel the urge to breath is also a great exercise/meditation to increase the breathing. But that ballon will put much more work on your lungs for sure.
Awesome stuff! Definitely on the nerdier side of running, but I loved it!
Loved this video Ben!! I should be working but I can't stop watching😂
Nice Swapfiets! The blue tire bike that is taking Europe by storm!
Thanks for posting, Ben.
Im sorry but isnt this just bad testing? 28 degree heat is gonna have a massive effect on your performance and the next test you do in normal weather is gonna tell you nothing about how much youve improved unless its also in 28 degree heat, why didnt you guys just do it inside or early in the morning when you found out that it was gonna be Hot?
Probably because it was a meeting between his coach and his coach’s coach coordinating flights and busy schedules.
Great video... much appreciated.
Greetings from Perth, Australia...👍👍
nice video, great work Ben. And congrats to 100k subcribers :)
Very interesting video Ben🎉😊 I am just interested what your coros said your vo2 max was?
Super interesting!! Great video.
Very interesting Ben. Kudos for sharing this
Really interesting informations. Thank you very much.
Great video. I really enjoyed listening to this 😊 thank you
In my 20's when I got tested I was in the 95th percentile. I haven't been tested since but I'm also nowhere near as active. I used to walk to class every day, play basketball for hours everyday, and run a 5k before going to class every day. Nowadays, I'm willing to bet my vo2 is trash tier. BUT I am starting to get back into doing 5k's every morning and cross training with calisthenics.
Super interesting how much velocity can influence the Speed.
My Last vo2 max result was 68% coming from cycling, but my fastest hm was "Just" 1:25 compared to your PB with a vo2 of 61 ☝️
Now this is high quality content!
Glad you enjoyed it
Very interesting! Shame about the high temperature but what a cool experience!
So interesting!! Great video 🙌
Almost never comment on TH-cam videos but that was very enjoyable and interesting to watch. Good work and best of luck with the run into Berlin
Very interesting - many thanks Ben
Opening shots are where my mate stays.
Bloody love CPH.
Easily best city in Europe.
I would swap my VO2 max for your marathon time anyday!! 🙌
Wow wow, great explanation 👏 🎉
Video is making me actually want to do something with my Sports Science degree
your running economy must be incredible Ben and like he said, all that really matters is velocity at Vo2Max not the number. Had my Vo2Max lab tested a few months ago and scored 62, ive got a HM PB of 76:02, I'd take your times over my Vo2Max anyday haha
Brillant information, thx for sharing 😁👍
Glad it was helpful!
Great content mate
Brilliant video
If you did this in a lab or more controlled setting, your vo2 max would be a lot higher. The weather probably reduced it by at least 5 points. Your race results prove that
My intuition is that Phily Bowden would be a great coach for you, Ben.
My 4 year old asked, 'why is Ben is Running so sad?' during the video call bit 😂
Good stuff with V 👍
How do you breathe while running in 3 min per km please tell me❤❤
This is interesting but why didn't they do the first test in the lab if they had one. seems like a bit of a waste of a trip?!
What is that balloon called and where can I buy one?! I need it too😂
Love it 50 min video
Question if Victor is just the same as you then how will that make improvements or is there enough of a difference that you will get results?
I thought you would have over 75 VO2 max
So what Canova is preaching is real. Train around the marathon aerobic pace instead of going for LT2 or obsessing about Vo2max
Not really, train the areas your are weak in specific to the demands of the distance your racing
The actionable part was interesting, the numbers were pretty boring though
Whats that balloon thing he was using to train his lungs?
I'm also interested in that. Thanks.
Really interesting, but dude was already doing massive mileage! So I'm not sure how he gets even more in.
Where do I get one of those ballon lung trainer things from?
Mads needs to work on his tan, tough hard lines of the tri suit tan lines haha.
Victor looked likes and sounds like Bane with that mask on lol
Altitude camp video coming soon?
Why not do the test in a temperature controlled lab 🤔
Interesting way to wear your earphones
Mads speaks like he is constantly at 1.5x speed
