Ben, I love your videos. I'm an old man, 73 years old, and started running at 60. I only run 5Ks, but might try to stretch it out to a 10K. I do the 5K in 24:XX and am getting faster. Right now, my goal is to run sub 24:00. I find your videos inspiring and I'm pulling for you to reach your goals. Thank you so much for your positive attitude and approach to life.
I am on the other side of the career. I will only do two more marathons in my life (Valencia 2024, Jönköping 2025). The reason is that there are risks to train and run long and hard when older. It is a little sad, but I will just run them and enjoy. I guess it is fortunate to have been running for many years.
Do you have a heart condition or is this something you have spoken with some doctors as a precautionary measure? I mean if you can train hard, go ahead and train hard.
I am no fast runner but for my first half marathon I could not resist and bought the Vaporfly next% 2... Despite me being a rather slow runner I ended up running much faster than expected. Carbon shoes really make you 5-6% faster. It doesn't matter which level you are because the carbon plate will spring you forward. They are more expensive than non-carbon shoes but totally worth it if you plan to run serious and do 5k, 10k, half-marathons and marathons races in the future. 😊😊
I'm also not very fast (3:44 marathon) and I agree with you, I use the Saucony Pro 3 for races, with a carbon plate, they make me faster than a daily trainer.
@@markgames7913 What if I noticed the difference on a daily training? What about all the world records in recent years? What about the better recovery reported by all the elites using carbon in training?
I've run 2 marathons and never thought of sipping on gels. I always take them all at once... no wonder my guts suffer. Great tip, I hope it'll help! Thanks
I like the bookend threshold session. WU w/strides 2-4km 15-20 min LT1 5 x 1k @ LT2 15-20 min upper LT1 or into LT2 CD 2-4k 60-90s rest between each. The first long on, I like to keep in control, go slower than any target pace if it feels too hard or awkward. Hit the 1k reps at half marathon pace (maybe down to 10k) then marathon (or half pace if it feels comfortable) for the final 20. Keeping controlled on the first is super key amd usually the final feels hard but good
GREAT tip to focus on getting the time on feet rather than an arbitrary number of miles (**cough 20 mile LR**). Running 20 miles in training at easy pace makes no sense if it will take you 4 hours, huge risk of diminishing returns.
@@thmonk8944 sure! Basically speaking a long run produces a very strong signal for endurance adaptation, which is why it’s so useful in training. The flip side is that each hour you continue to run, you increase the risk of injury and overtraining. A 4 hour run may produce more signal than your body can absorb, and the muscle damage and cardiorespiratory stress may be so great that it would have been better to just run for 3 hours.

That's the first time I've heard anyone recommend sipping on gels. I'm definitely going to try that in my next marathon training block. I've always just consumed them as quickly as possible in the past.
Totally agree with all you said. There many things that you can take care of before or during a marathon, however one more tip for a beginner could be: practice what you are going to eat before the race and eat the same thing, preferably at the same time before your long run.
I am SLOW AF and run my races in Saucony Endorphin Elite. They are so comfortable on my feet, and I definitely run faster with less effort. So yeah carbon plate shoes can work for us slow runners too. Glad you pointed that out. Disrupt the narrative that carbon plate shoes are only for the elites.
Great suggestions, certainly about the shoes! It would be awkward for e.g. Verstappen to do all his training in a Ford Fiesta and then do his race in a F1 RB/Honda. Don't be too shy not wanting to wear it down, you can do a few training runs, I would suggest even to race a half in your race shoe and than take it to the full one. And don't underestimate the sox, wear the same sox as they are (almost) as important.
Thanks Ben! I will be racing Valencia in December! So excited since I'll feel it'll be my first real big time marathon out of the 5 I already ran so far!!
Hey Ben. Love the content. Do you have any recommendations regarding bespoke marathon training plans (I.e. where to look/coaches based in London)? I’m looking to run a sub 3 next year and would like to follow a training plan that is more focused on me rather than a generic plan. Keep up the great work.
Ben I have been following your journey and this Sunday it’s my turn to run my first ever Marathon (Amsterdam). Thanks for the tips, would love to have seen some tips on how to warm-up for the race!
Thanks for this Ben. I've signed up for my first marathon this April (Rotterdam), and I'm in two minds about my goals for the race. On the one hand, I anticipate it to be tough, and should just run it sensibly. On the other hand, I'll be 45 next spring, so I'm not getting any younger. Currently, I have good speed (my Coros even predicts a sub 3-hour race, although that is highly optimistic since it is based on 5K speed, and I haven't done anything longer than 20K), and I kind of want to make the most of it.
If I were you I’d maybe look at doing some half marathons and even a local 20 miler as you’ve got plenty of time to prepare. That’ll help tell you a little more about where your speed endurance is at. 5k pace is great but without the specific training it’s not that useful if you can’t get to theough the race without hitting the wall at half way :)
Timely Ben, thanks. Running my second marathon in Palma tomorrow, not going to be fast or pretty but if the buzz is the same as Sevilla I’m going to love it. Good luck to everyone running this weekend.
Will try the one about taking the gels over 10 mins. Till now I tend to walk through the fuelling stations, take the gel & wash it down. (I do triathlons, so fuelling is slightly different).
Great to hear! I’m sure you’ll get there one day but enjoy the journey until then :) people often rush to the marathon but there’s still plenty to learn from racing 5ks which help massively when moving up the distance:)
I’d practice what the race your training for has on offer. Eg set up a table with water to mimic a water station for example every 5k on those race specific long runs

Sounds like you’d benefit more from some progressive long runs. Starting at bellow marathon pb pace and then the last day 3/4 miles trying to run a little faster than race pace. Work on that speed endurance rather than time on feet long runs I’d expect would be most beneficial for you :)

Haha! I’d not noticed that at wll
I tryuly hope i have another marathon in me, Femoral nerve damage from prolapse discs is proving a real pain the...! well this changes, nerves are funny little buggers. Aiming for London 2025, hopefully I will make it but at 53 reality is setting in that I may have to cut the distance shorter or find another hobby that keeps my ADHD in check. Hope your back is doing OK Ben?
Thanks Karl! I’ve also had some nerve issues with priformis syndrome which is now manageable with visits to the osteopath. Hope you get back running pain free soon :)
Wearing carbon shoes is like wearing SOAR, I can’t run but feeling good while running is a win. 😅
How can get sub 1 hour in half marathon please sir tell me?? Waiting your reply from months
Sub 1 hour! That’s top of the top elite, averaging 2:51/km. I can run that for maybe 2/3 km so I guess you have to become one of the best in the world
I wish one day my form is as good as yours lol
You should see my form when I started. It’s naturally improved as I’ve training more I guess :)
@@BenIsRunning I have been at it since beginning of this year, just finally retired my shoes and bought the 1080v13 and sc trainer v3 but I think I want to go with a 1 do it all shoe and I’m trying to decide, rebel v4 or Mach 6, endorphin speed 4 or whatever!
@@Ennis09 my pick would be an endorphin speed but note the 4 is a little narrow so if bare that in mind. The rebel and mach are also great options so might be worth heading to a running specialist to see which works best for you
@@BenIsRunning I went to fleetfeet and they have like no stock and not much help!!! lol
