      Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed the video. The MD-80 videos are a few years old now, but it’s still a fine aircraft.

    Great video! I learned a ton from this video. I took my MD-80 around for a circuit after watching your video and with the notes from this videos, I made a much better approach and landing than before.

    Thanks for these great videos. Always nice to get these tutorials from real pilots. Nothing wrong with other channels, most of them do great tutorials. But sometimes they do things just wrong and you only find out watching your videos or actually reading the manual ;-)
    The MD80 is my favourite airplane in X-Plane 11, at first I thought is odd and complicated but it actually is really fun and handles so well, especially getting the speed down.
    Always good landings from a collegue from flight level 0 - I drive trains for a living :)

      Yes the MD80 is really good fun. I like that fact that the systems are quite different from the Boeing or Airbus aircraft, the autoflight systems especially.

    Great video again. Suggestion for another video. What about flying in bad weather. With thunderstorms etc and how to use a weather radar, with tilting etc. and avoid cells, icing. And other procedures around this :)

      Thanks. I've got the 1.40 version downloaded and will hopefully have a look at the go around and hold procedure in the next video. I've not really looked much at the weather radar or weather system in X-Plane, but it's a good idea for a video, so will have a look.

    And BTW: Rotatesim released a patch for the MD80 today. Version 1.40

    Hi Graeme, great stuff, learn a lot from these videos. Can you do failure videos too? Engine loss at cruise, during approach, at V1, emergency decents, loss hydraulics, electrical systems etc. Much appreciated !

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Joaquín. I’m glad you’re learning stuff from the videos. There are a few reasons I don’t do the failures. It’s a two crew aircraft, and while one pilot can mostly operate the aircraft normally it really needs two crew for failures. One pilot flies while the other pilot manages the failure. Very few sim developers are type rated on the models they develop, so while the normal operations can be made quite realistic the further from “normal” one gets the more unusual the sim model behaves. Also, of the many many hours we spend in the sim learning a new type, probably less than 10% is spent on normal procedures, we practice failures, failures, failures! The effort to replicate that training in the sim is really too high for entertainment purposes.

    Hi Graeme, nice video, great landing… did not understand “keystroke” for removing AP warnings signs. Please Do not underestimate, “just flying” from one place to another, I enjoy watch and hear your handling the plane, special your awareness globally and particularly, regarding to the decent (how high, how long, speed, vs).
    Still would like to see you online on PilotEdge:o) maybe a night flight, or a NDB DME APP at EKAH. C U Carsten

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Carsten, the next video will be the go around and hold, followed hopefully by non-precision. Regarding the keystrokes, clicking the autopilot and auththrust toggle switches on the FCU to off will result in the red lights flashing on the FMA indicator. If you bind the keystrokes ap_disc and at_disc that won't happen. There's a bug in 1.40 where the ap_toggle binding doesn't work correctly so I've made Rotate aware and they'll fix it next release.

    Hi Graeme, as usual great video and thank you!!! I watch them over a few times and keep picking up great hints. I look forward to your next. You mentioned making the procedures available, where can i find them? Thanks again!!!

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Robert, the v1.31 had a bug with the fuel burn which, along with some other bits I reported to Rotate. I need a few days to work with the new version before I can update the notes and upload them. Unfortunately I found a minor bug with the autopilot toggle with 1.40 that Rotate have confirmed, so that needs another new version and I don’t know when that will be. As soon as the notes are available the descriptions on on the MD80 content will be updated.

      Oh gosh no problem. When you have them that will be great. This plane is very cool but you have a to fly it often to keep up with it :)

      Hello Robert, If you're still interested the procedure notes are now available at the x-plane.org download site. forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/files/file/42836-md-80-procedures/

    Hi Graeme! First of all, a big Thank You for your great tutorials! I wonder, why is not possible to choose a value for a DH over 500 in the Rotate MD-80? Do I miss something? When in non-precision approach, the DH in the charts is often over 500. Or am I wrong?

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your question. A decision Height is based on the Radio Altimeter, so would normally only be used for CAT 2 and CAT 3 ILS approaches. For CAT 1 and non precision it’s either a decision Altitude or minimum descent Altitude, and as these are based off the normal Baro Altimeter you wouldn’t set a DH. The heights shown beside the Baro minimums are heights over the threshold and are not directly useable for a decision height due to the fact the approach is not over perfectly flat terrain. This means the radalt can’t be used for a decision height unless a DH value is published. Hope that all makes sense.

    • @flymatrix7985
      @flymatrix7985 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That makes much more sense now. 😊 Thank you very much! For example, in Arlanda (ESSA) Rwy 19L has CAT 2/3 ILS. Accordingly, in the charts the radar altitude (DH) for CAT 2 ILS is 105 feet and for CAT 3A ILS is 50 feet. And these are considered as published. On the contrary, while Rwy 26 has only CAT 1 ILS, only the Decision Altitude of 325 feet for the ILS Approach or the MDA of 450 feet for the non-precision approach can be used. Have I got it right?

    Hi I saw today that there is a new version of that MD80 which has a fix page in the fms. Suggestion for a new topic: Maybe you could give some real examples of how and when that should be used?

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Anders, Yes I've got the new version. The fix page can be used in number of different ways. On longer trips I'll put a 150NM or 200NM radius ring around airfields where I've looked at the weather for, the result is better situational awareness in the event of a enroute diversion. At airfields that have a lot of terrain nearby we'll mark centre of the 25NM Sector Safe Altitude and put lines in to mark each sector, again simply to aid SA. Finally if you have a look at my IXEG 737 Vectored ILS Autoland video you'll see how they can be used to help sim pilots self position for an ILS approach.

    I like to see RNAV approach and landing covered.

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Jeff, at the moment the plan is to look at a go around and hold from the ILS, then a VOR or NDB non-precision approach followed by an RNAV approach. The MD80 doesn’t seem to be able to do LNAV/VNAV (or APV Baro to use another term) approaches so it would be limited to Nav / Vert Speed for the RNAV, meaning in practice it’s virtually identical to a VOR approach.

    How can we get your abbreviated procedures guide.
    Thx Lee

    • @ReflectedRealitySimulations
      @ReflectedRealitySimulations  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lee, the procedure notes are still being worked on. 1.31 had a problem with fuel burn so I was holding off for 1.40. However I’ve found another couple of little things with the new version that have been reported to Rotate. If there isn’t a patch in the next couple days I’ll try and release the procedures for the weekend.
