Classic. For anyone who has seen a lot of Herzog interviews, the story about him having to speak French only because someone was about to murder him is classic Herzog... the number of times someone has threatened his life (including Klaus Kinski, his frequent star) is his version of really, really dark cocktail conversation. Seth clearly knew and enjoyed this. "So only because a volcano was about to explode..."

The most amazing thing is, that Herzog said in an interview he had never watched any Star Wars movie, yet he gave the most convincing performance of an imperial officer in any Star Wars movie or show. On the other hand he was probably told "imperial officers are basically space nazis", after he mentioned that he had never watched any of the movies and as a German born in 1942, he probably got to know a lot of actual former nazi officers when he grew up, so he probably just channeled them, when he played the part.

When he was describing how his book wasn't a direct recounting of events with the soldier, I thought his description was sort of the through line that relates many art forms to one another... or underpins them. Constructing something that isn't accurate to *reality* to bring more clearly into focus some aspect(s) of reality that you want to call attention to. That can be done by stripping away, or adding to; focusing in detail or expanding the frame. Very cool.

There's another story heard about a woman surviving a plane exploding in mid air and falling into a jungle several hundred feet below while still strapped to her seat. She trekked through the jungle, surviving this unbelievable event, and then I thought: How has Herzog not made a film of this? It turns out he did make a documentary about it. The title slips my mind but a quick look as his filmography you'd find it. Herzog seems drawn to these stories of humanity confronting Nature.

    • @soulwarrior

I think this reminded me of the book Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptonomicon
I believe that there was a Japanese character in the book that didn't realize that the war was over and that had convinced himself he had to continue to defend the island he was stationed on or something to that degree.

    • @soulwarrior

@@EmpyreanLightASMR I believe that happened in the book, yes, but I'm somewhat unsure; it's been a while since I read it.
I was most surprised to find out this was written in 1999. It's crazy HOW MUCH foresight Stephenson had... understanding the importance of data in general, the internet and cryptography in particular and I think there were even hints at cryptocurrencies and other similar ideas in that book... and all of that in 1999. What a visionary.
(I didn't read it in 1999, but still.)
