Herzog? Steve got Herzog. Amazing.
This is one of the more positive outcomes of the internet. When two worlds like this collide.
Hit the play button as fast i could
they way my jaw dropped
Yep surprised me too.
Herzog did this for a reason. I’ve never not heard of him not being deliberate. So cool. Such a great filmmaker, storyteller, and artist. He’s on that Kubrick, lynch, Scorsese level of cinematic artist.
Kubrick is king and Scorsese not on their level.

I wanted three hours of this. Two of the most interesting and eloquent men of our time. Storytellers of unequaled talent - together. Absolutely fascinating.
Yes! I wish they talked longer!!
These 1 hour episodes with great guests break my heart.
It was just getting started and I noticed I was halfway through. Damnit.
But, what it lacks in duration it does NOT lack in content.
Amazing guest. Arguably the greatest documentarian
Arguably.
His fiction films are equally great.
God. What a contrast. I was born in California in 1943. My brother and I would whine for soda or candy to my German great-aunt who was fostering us. She memorably said "What do you want me to do? Cut it out of my leg?"
While it did shut us up, the aura of possibility still lingered. Could she?
How fortunate we were.
His conversational voice is exactly the same as his film narration. what an artist
I was thinking the same thing! It’s so cool
God I could listen to Werner all day
Enlightening interview. Steve and Werner have starkly different world views.
Every assumption Steve made towards Werner's intentions and perceptions were based on cold logic and harsh reality. Werner shot him down every time. Steve, you were talking to an artist long in tooth, not the mirror. This was a good opportunity to be inquisitive and receptive.
An invigorating episode, chock full of misunderstandings on part of the interviewer. An excellent look into the meateating media-minded mogul that we all adore, revealing his hubris towards his own notoriety and boundless intellect.
Werner was a wonderful guest.
It can be confusing to have dialogue with someone with such ego and perceived intelligence 😂 Steve had to work through the dripping condisention.
I respect Rinella but especially the comment at 54:20 was painful to hear. Jesus christ...
Great interview. I wanted it to be 2 hours longer. Now I will proceed to fall in to a TH-cam hole of Werner Herzog interviews.
his memoir is something else. 16 hrs of the most insane stories
Well this moved up today's playlist to the top. What a wicked guest to have on.
Someone has to make a full blown mini series on Werner Herzog's life. Each part a new chapter. What an amazing guest and awesome host. Much respect!
Werner Herzog is probably my favorite movie director of all time. His movies are totally unique & unlike anything else being made. His movies from early in his career from the 1970s are masterpieces.
Thank you, Werner Hertzog, for knowing yourself and being the man you are.
"Awe" inspiring.🙏❤️🌏🌿🕊🎵🎶🎵
Stuck in bed with covid. Can barely keep my eyes open without them watering, but I just had to watch this. What an amazing human to interview.
This should easily have 10x the views it does. Never expected a Steve & Werner crossover but I am so here for it.
I think this interview is better than other Herzog interviews because of the things these guys have in common. Not sure exactly what.
Herzog is a living ASMR, he could narrate a Denny's Menu and I could die happy
Can’t wait to see how Mr. Herzog does in trivia.
Werner is a very special man. I just adore him !
He is the best!!!
Didn't think The Meat Eater podcast would ever bring me to tears 😊 thank you Mr. Herzog
What a beautiful soul he is. Amazing guest Steve and crew! I feel honored just to hear him speak.
I LOVE Happy People. I’ve watched it several times.
Bravo, you bagged a legend.
GOAT of filmmaking
International treasure. Top shelf conversation! Thanks!
DEAR GOD PLEASE let there be a Part 2 one day! AMAZING stuff!
What a catch. Love me some Herzog. Fascinating guy. I saw him in person once just wandering around the Oktoberfest with his wife I believe. Was half tempted to bother him.
I am so happy as a German
Great interview. Mr Herzog is truly a gifted storyteller. His voice and the way he narrates his films is heartwarming. Happy People is my all time favorite. After watching that film I too wanted to be there and experience that freedom and love of nature. Thank you Mr Herzog.
I love Werners observations about food. Reminds me of my depression era parents. Its wrong to waste food.
What an amazing conversation. Thank Steve.
Given how in demand W.H. must be for interviews, I'm assuming he is extremely guarded as to whom he grants access. A coup for Steve, and a great treat for MeatEater devotees. Well done Steve!
Outstanding! Mr. Herzog is a Legend! Thank You for this!
This is one of the best talks to have ever taken place. We all can learn from these 2 gentlemen.
This episode should have 10x the views. Fucking stellar.
“I envied them.. and when I see them on the screen, there’s only one wish: “Oh man, I would like to join them!”.
This rawness is what makes Werner such a legendary filmmaker. Absolutely love this guy…
Wow. Had a total moment of worlds colliding when I saw this on my feed
I’ve never understood the question, “Which is your favorite?” Every artist always answers the same way.
One of my favorite meateater podcasts episodes
I have been waiting for this collaboration for a couple years now. I had faith that it was coming and it's finally here!
Now I want to see Steve and Werner up at Steve's cabin in Alaska.
hugeee guest. Nicely done
Unbelievable to get Herzog. One of the most legendary humans of our era
Werner is one of my favourite humans. "Fireball: Visitors from Darker Worlds" is my favourite film. I think we will face a Chelyabinsk type scenario at some point.
Holy F...it's Werner! A true legend.
Great job Corinne! Huge guest.
Steve, what a terrific interview, you have such lovely instincts and brought the best from this interview. Such detail and color. I'm so impressed with both of you.
Few personalities in the hook and bullet world would consider interviewing Herzog.... But Steve does. Once again he leads the way.
He will save our hunting heritage in North America
That statement starting at 15:00. Amazing. Hits hard.
Especially as an American... where are we going?
It’s a good reminder to reject the current authoritarian regime that’s trying to overthrow democracy
It's pretty incoherent. There is a schizophrenia in most modern Germans after the war. Not anything that he said is backed up by evidence but the propaganda is so pervasive before school, through school, throughout society. It's like someone being beaten and constantly told it's because they're bad
It fk's Germans up. Has for several generations
Grizzly Man was the first doc I've watched from Herzog. Awesome guest!
Talk about going outside your comfort zone Steve with this interview, NICE!
Thank you and to Mr. Herzog also.
There can only be one and Herzog is it .
My favorite Director! Best interview with him ever!!! Thank you.
You two have redeemed the internet!!!
We need more podcasts from Steve like this. What an epic interview.
Biggest flex of your career. So good.
Happy People is one of the greatest stories ever told, right up there with Dersu Uzala.
Too bad the people depicted turned out to be neonazis.
Had a crummy day at work, came home and found this!! Yes! So stoked for this conversation.
Please take this advice for I never heeded it myself never spend a day doing something. You do not love . when the time comes and you were old and fragile. Nothing will be more important than the decision to spend as much time in your life doing something you love.
Holy schnitzel! Happy People is utterly brilliant! Just pee'd a little seeing he's a guest.
Happy People was amazing
Great guest great interview
I CALLED THIS, I thought he was going to be on when Ken Burns was on (equally awesome). Golly what a treat.
Hello from New Orleans Louisiana, My Great Uncle's had a Saloon in Anchorage Alaska during the 1900's. Robert Service, and Jack London would join my Uncle Jack Tansey on his steamship for card games... The family lore is similar to these wonderful antidotes.
I didnt believe it when i saw it! What a huge guest!
Oh man, I saw Grizzly Man, I was really crying during that documentary, bawling my tears out of my eyeballs
Great men.
I live 20 minutes from twin lake you are my hero
I didn't want it to end...
awesome episode, great timing as I drive 17 hrs home from seeing family for the holidays
This is my nephew Werner
This brings me peace
I now really want a one on one podcast series with just Steve and a guest! Not knocking the regular podcast by any means, the one on one interview is just always different
I wish this was 3 times as long
Thank you for this interview. Amazing person with get story to tell.
What a great guest to have on.
The rapport between Herzog and Rinella appears to be quite thin. Herzog comes across as candid and unashamed, while Rinella, I infer, grew up poor and is ashamed about it. There's a prevailing sense of embarrassment in American culture regarding poverty and lower socioeconomic status. It seems that a significant aspect of the MeatEater show is to overlay hunting with a superficial layer of spirituality and polish.
This was really good!
His role in Jack Reacher was legendary
Great interview, could have listened for hours and hours.
Living legend.
Stroszek 👌 one of my all time favorite movies
Incredible out of left field, mind blown get! Thank you gents
Thank you, amazing.
Werner Herzog. Holy ....!!!
I felt bad for Steve. He's a legend and an alpha. Herzog is a talisman of humanity. It's hard to relax like that. Herzog staff should have known that Rinella is a higher quality network than many others and given 3hrs
Take example a true joyful greatful human we should all try to be like this best show yet!
I'm just here to hear Werners voice.
Really good interview . Thanks
Stunning!
Wow. Just the thumbnail I’m excited
Can't wait to watch this.
Amazing guest.
Herzog is a legend!
Thank you Sir!!!!!
Nice mix of Christoph Waltz and Arnold, really enjoyed that.
This was very enjoyable
"Unique" is one and only, so it cannot be "very." Herzog begins at 4:45.
I'm glad he didn't include that audio, and I'm not surprised he was willing to do battle to keep it out of there. If you're curious what a man being slaughtered and eaten by a Grizzly Bear sounds like, you should spend time wondering why. I can't imagine a more terrifying, brutal, and terrible way to die. And you want to hear what it sounds like? I have more respect for Werner than almost all of the artists I look up to, and I would have lost some of that if he had. Just as a side note, I had to pickup Werner from that house they're in once early in the morning to take him to the airport, and just let me say meeting your heroes is typically disappointing, but not in his case. He is exactly as he appears, and I wish I had been able to drive him to where ever his plane was going.
Great interview really enjoyed it whilst out fishing morcombe Bay uk.
Steve got in trouble! "its a metaphor, not insanity" 😂😂 great podcast
best episode yet. more like these please
