I do not get why you call it a flat-4, it sounds so boring !!! I have always known VW Käfers, Porsches, 2CVs, BMW R Bikes and Subarus as Boxer engines !!!
R estate is the perfect daily driver. Fun, fast, cargo and passenger space, not too old that it’s hard to find parts or will leave you stranded, can find them in manual, and they are common enough that I wouldn’t care if it got scraped or dirty. I literally see no downsides.
Really enjoyed this review (I had a bug eyed WRX estate, great car). I think it's probably fairer to describe this as illustrating a range of options dependant on budget rather than a simple 1 Vs the other. Subaru is nearly 30 years old and iro £5k, the golf is around 10 years old and iro £15k. That's quite a big difference and I'm not convinced you're comparing apples with apples.
I've had a Mk7 Golf estate for a number of years, Dragy tested it and did 0-60 in 4.68 seconds stock. Had a remap and a few mods running 400bhp costing £2k, now 0-60 is 3.5 seconds. Best all-round car I've had.
I've got a mk6 r hatch and it does the same to 100 kph it has an intake any other mods are unknown to me I have a turbo back exhaust and other mods to put on it and get tuned hoping for 400-450 so good to know from your experience I should get in the 3,s somewhere not many everyday cars doing that and yet it does everything else great.🤟

Had an Impreza estate 15 years ago was brilliant, currently have a golf r estate and for a modern kind of car it’s a very good allrounder. For a classic car the Impreza would be cool if you’ve owned it for that long you know the car inside out wouldn’t like to buy one today due to age hidden history. The mk7/7.5 a good choice for its current value. As long as you keep away from abused Rs you’ll be fine.
@KrisDocherty thank you, lots of late nights in work and help from friends. Have you got Facebook or something? Be good to chat to you about the history of the car in your ownership. Maybe you have some old photos to share
Love impreza's, I own a V5 STi RA Ltd, but at that age it will be a money pit and much as I am not an R fan, it will be way cheaper to run and parts are far more abundant. Mine costs me thousands a year to keep running and in reasonable condition. An alternative could be the legacy STi wagon. They are much newer and one on Auto trader recently for less than £20k and that is a fantastic bit of kit. Or how about an Evo IX Wagon...😈
WRX wasn't sold in the uk until the new age cars. The original UK car was a turbo 2000, with the 200 ish bhp. The car here is a JDM wrx which had more, more like 250bhp.
The Golf R is not fun…. I have owned many Gti’s and a Golf R… the latter was fast but the chassis was numb and inert. The GTI by contrast felt much more on tippy toes and therefore more involving and enjoyable to drive.
really? ive had both and thought the opposite, cant really tune the gti because its fwd and a bit pointless where as a bit of a tune on the R and its a bit of a beast

£5k for the impreza, £15k for the golf I'll gladly take the impreze, spend the money on bodywork and engine then still have change for the golf r money!
Without the boxer engine and firing order you dont get that unique subaru burble. You can fit an unequal header on any other car but you wont get the same burble as a Subaru.
If you can't even get the facts of the Subaru WRX engine noise right then don't trust you to get anything else right by your explanation every boxer motor should sound the same my Subaru outback and every old VW beetle or type 3 I've owned doesn't sound like a WRX nor do the 86 or brz..... unequal headers even a slightly educated car nerd knows this how can you get such a simple thing wrong?
The golf is a boring, soulless cheaply made, unreliable tat that is only bought by men with testosterone issues who like to meet up in a retail park and brag about stage 76833 tune and how they beat a granny in her i10 on the a406 😂. The Subaru is the real car enthusiasts car. All of the old ones will outlast the Golf.

Piston Firing order & Unequal length exhaust headers/manifold creates the scooby rumble
Can get a header kit that makes it sound like any other angry jap car tbh 😅

The sound comes from unequal headers not just being a flat four.
Was looking for this comment. Would've been nice if they said that.
