It’s key. It’s the only way you know. If you have 40 parts to mill, you need consistency. It took me hours to calibrate my saws and fences. Guess what? Then you have to re check too. I do it just before a large run. One offs I’ll eyeball it and it’s fine. Otherwise trouble shall brew!
Great Video! Thanks! A tip from the micro-jig info: You can pre-cut a slot with your table saw along the desired dovetails to help guide and alleviate some work on your rather expensive 24$ router bit if you are cutting a lot of tracks. I get really nice and clean straight dovetails when I pre-cut. Peace!
Great stuff, Matt! I just built a simple router table, and so I was paying particular attention to the router table cross cut jig. My table isn't quite big enough for that size, but I will be making (or buying) a bigger router table, so I am definitely going to build me one of those! I also have the plans for the table saw sled and I'm looking forward to completing that as well. Thanks for the great tips!
These are awesome! Even the simplest of jigs and holders help tremendously. Basically, it can replace a hand or helper with a few pieces of wood. Great demos and explanations. Thanks!
Thank you for making this video. I am recently retired and finally have time to make woodworking one of my main hobbies. I already built a crosscut sled but now I see how useful and essential these other jobs are to move to the next level. I especially like that you demonstrate the use of dovetail slots. This is great because it allows a beginner to start getting great results without spending lots of money right away on aluminum T-slots and the other hardware that is required to work with them. And of course I'll be able to build the jigs faster. Thanks again. 🙂👍
I recently made a sled for my bandsaw for doing exactly what you did with the miter saw jig. Works like a champ and I don’t feel that dread when using the miter saw.
Glad to see a regular video again. I’ll come watch these, not the other stuff. The algorithm might say you’re growing from them, but this is what I subscribed for. 👍🏻
Great video with a lot of good ideas. Just a thought, I use the same 1x4 handle on all of my router templates to keep my fingers away from the bit. Also provides better control.
The calculator is invaluable. Until I learned how to dial in my saw and pushed past the doubt I had to make a sled(and other jigs),I wasn’t getting all I could out of it. Not only did it make to tool more useful but it was valuable practice and a confidence builder to make other things
I follow many woodworkers on TH-cam. You are hands down my favorite to watch. The way you explain things is so simple and easy to follow. Keep up the great work!
Hahaha, yes we all would like to keep them securely attached to our hands!! I'm a newbie and started off watching Matt. Now I cringe if I watch other TH-camrs with their fingers too close, sleeves too long/loose, standing directly in front of a path of a kickback, etc. Matt keeps us safer.
I bought that thin strip jig using your affiliate link when you first showed that jig in a video a week or so ago. Looking forward to using it for the first time soon!
Thanks 👍 for all the jig build ideas Matt! I have a piece of 3/4 oak plywood in the shop begging me to use it. Now I know what it will become. 😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤
Dude. I love your channel! I’m new to getting more serious with my builds, very educational and takes the seeming complexity and makes it easy even for this guy. Thanks!
Nice. The coolest hack I ever built is a 36" square corian router table - you can go on CL and almost aways find contractors remnants recycle and get them for $100. They cut on a table saw, stupid easy, always flat and a way slippery surface and no issues. I use it all the time; made my rockler obsolete
Good vid. I couldn't imagine what the jig on the static pic would be for. My router table support push block looks a good bit different than yours -- works the same way.
Thanks for all of your great videos. Even when I have plans I like to draw out things in Sketchup, It gives me a better picture of how something should go together. The jointing jig was a challenge. After you draw the 1st dovetail groove, the edges are no longer parallel so the push/pull tool won't work. Have not been able to figure out how to get it to "Push thru". The only way I could figure out to draw this was to draw 18 blocks with half the dovetail groove on 2, 3, or 4 sides, then line them all up together. I'm using Sketchup free, Does anyone know of an easier way to draw grooves that cross?
You can build a thin rip jig, too, though it requires a couple parts you may not have laying around. I had a small wheel bearing that I mounted in the end of a thin piece of hardwood, and routed a slot for a miters slot clamp that I borrow from my diy feather board. I agree it is a very handy thing to have whether store bought or hand made. 👍
I’m so glad I came across your video. Every one of these seem so useful. I will definitely be making each one. Thank you so much!! And I subscribed to make sure I don’t miss anything else 😃

Never heard of that $10 MM stick. Excellent idea -- my miter saw has scared the living daylights out of me more times than I can count. Buying one right now.
Need another smaller crosscut jig since the one I made is too big. Being able to do a 20” door is great, but so much is smaller that it’s just a big heavy thing to move. Think something 13” deep as a complement would be great.
