You know what this means? Some of OOT's songs were written ENTIRELY around samples!! Some of the greatest songs on the soundtrack are dubbed samples with effects and instruments stacked on!

Wow. This is one of the best investigative mini-documentaries I've ever watched. Though some may say that the subject is trivial, I love your never-ending search for the truth and your innovative methodology.
If I ever want to tell someone what investigative journalism is, this video will serve as a prime example.
If only there were more people with the work ethic that went into this video, the Internet would have far less false information.

Apparently, there are a number of people who don't know what a 'sample library' is. You see, there are those that create a 'library' of noises, sounds, sound effects, etc. They then proceed to sell these libraries to others to use for whatever they want. In the case of creating music for a video game, if you're not recording someone playing it live, you would need to create it yourself using sounds. The sounds of drums, the sounds of trumpets, "aaaahs", "ooga-boogas", chanting", etc. You take these sounds, and arrange them into your song.
Now, WHERE do you think they GET these sounds? Do they, perhaps:
A.) Take the time to painstakingly record themselves making every instrument noise, choir "ooos", etc. (at which point, they may as well be recording the music performed live)
    or
B.) Pay someone else for a compilation, a "library", if you will, of sounds that they have already recorded. A "Sound Library", as it were.
What we are talking about is an incredibly common practice, done by everyone who makes digital music. Sound libraries are why many well-known movies have the infamous "Wilhelm Scream". There is no 'remixing' or 'theft of music' going on here, because sample libraries are not 'music'. They're digital sound samples, mere seconds long (if even that), compiled for the usage in creating music (or whatever else you can think to use them for).

Sorry for bringing up a 3-year-old comment, but the Choice A is what I initially had in mind when the game developers made the sounds and music of the games. But, it really makes sense that they would rather use a sample library to save up a ton of money in creating the music. But, it is still cool to think that not everything is really made from scratch as what I initially thought.

The Fire Temple chant is sampled off of the first 2 verses of Surat Al-Ikhlas, A chapter towards the end of the Quran. It is spliced with a Muslim Eid Chant. It all translates to: "In the name of God the Most Gracious the Most Merciful. Oh Say He is God the One and Only. God the Everlasting/ Eternal (switches to a different track) God is most great and to God is all praise."

  • @CrispyDragons

Wow, it looks like no one in the comments section actually watched the video.
Nintendo didn't remove the chanting because Muslims complained (and I honestly doubt many would have), they did it preemptively due to a "no real religions in games" rule. It's the same reason you don't see crosses, stars of David, or Buddhist symbols in Zelda games. And yet you all act as if Muslims were the only overzealous people in the world.
Besides, the people in the music department could have easily recreated the chant without using the same religious text. I wonder why they didn't just do that, although I know music technology was a bit more limited back then and maybe they couldn't. Anyway, the amount of misinformed people in the comments section is astounding.

Almost a song for every scene and all of theme memorable and even iconic. It's understandable that he used a lot of pre-made things as inspiration and then foundational building blocks to so many of these themes. I hope some should make a full video comparison like this but with all his work across the different franchises.

I had the original gold cartridge version and I gotta say that I liked the chanting. It was not until I played someone else's cartridge to help them out that I realized that they changed everything. It's kinda cool I that I have an artifact of gaming history.

GaijinGoomba: makes an emotional video about how the poor Muslims got offended and has a Muslim girl come on explaining why the video game is offensive. Said video was made 10 months ago, only has 223,878 subscribers but the video has 1,775,046 views.
GameTrailers: makes a detailed, extremely well researched video showing the origins of the music and how the idea that Muslims were offended couldn't even be a possibility when it came to reasoning for the change. Said video was made over a year ago, 387,609 subscribers, but the video only has 55,058.
I guess hard facts and no ass-kissing makes for a dull video for some people.

Federico Porcel Since you're clearly an expert when it comes to determining if something is offensive, I humbly beseech you to come down off of your high horse to my level and explain how it's offensive. Keep in mind that compared to you I'm just an ignorant hick so you may need to dumb down your explanation so that I can understand it.

I remember this chant very well and I thought it was very creepy when I first heard it when I was a kid, but it made the Temple come alive for me. I understand it being offensive by using it without knowing what it means though. But people shouldnt let it bother them so much.

@@YourBrain you know people can just say that to you to dismiss any sort of anger you have about anything too, like for instance if you dropped something down a drain I doubt you'd appreciate someone just coming up and telling you "eh you're just choosing to get mad over this" for example. To say that is nonconstructive to the situation, kinda hypocritical since I doubt you'd ever say that to yourself if something made you mad, and from personal experience Ive noticed people often just say that to get other people to shut up so they dont have to actually think about the complaints that the people they're telling that to have because they just cant be bothered to actually listen to someone else's point of view or problem. But that last part's just from personal experience viewing random internet and real world conversations over the years.

The only differences that stuck out at me in the later versions was it's disappearance, the gerudo symbol change, and the blood being green.

Interesting enough, the sample name “African 13 111-A” (the chant used in the Woodfall Temple theme in Majoras Mask) was also the same chant used in the song “Growl From The Digital Haze” from Phantasy Star Online Episode 1&2. I always knew this growing up as a kid but it was so interesting to find out where the sound sample originated from, how it wasn’t an original chant created by Nintendo/SEGA, and the fact that both companies used it. God I miss Pop-Fiction so much, I always love video game urban legend videos. Thank god Game Sleuth is the spiritual successor to this amazing series!

The original Fire Temple music with the chanting was great. I loved it. The feeling it gave the Fire Temple goes unmatched. One of my college friends had the original version of the game with this. When I bought the game a few months later, it had been removed. Still had the original symbol for the Gerudo though.

  • @dudewhat4434

I swear my original copy of OT had the chant for the fire temple. As soon as I heard the music I instantly remembered it, and I also remember thinking (as a young kid) that the stone faces in the walls were the ones chanting.
This can definitely be a false memory, but it seems quite real.
