    I gathered from this that both are true. It's a time line thing.
    -MJ was interested in making music for the Sonic series.
    -After experimenting, he finds too much frustration in the Genny's limitations and pulls out.
    -His wish is honored to have all credits removed.
    -Then, the scandal with the blackmailers occurs and Sega further tries to remove all traces of the work in a rushed reconstruct.

    • @DefinitiveDubs
      @DefinitiveDubs 9 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      I agree with this, but I think there's more to it. Remember, Sonic 3 and S&K were originally meant to be one game, released in February 94. I think that while Sega DID want to remove all traces of his work, at the time they had a much bigger problem to focus on, due to time constraints: splitting Sonic 3 in half. Sega had to scramble to finish the first half of Sonic 3 by its release date in the U.S. as well as replacing the music. New composers were brought in and made the new music, but by the time the game went gold, they simply forgot to put the new music in. Alternatively, they decided not to bother with it, since MJ was going uncredited anyway. For future releases of Sonic 3, such as the S&K Collection, they decided to use the new music you hear in that, which were the replacement tracks originally made for the game. But due to fan backlash at the new music being inferior, they say "Alright screw it, they're uncredited anyway, nobody will have to know. Just re-release the game as it was."

    • @Jami393
      @Jami393 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BlazeHeatnix The thing is though, it was only MJ who wanted to go uncredited, so therefor this might have allowed other composers connected to MJ at the time, to still have their name on the final version of the project.

    • @DefinitiveDubs
      @DefinitiveDubs 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jami393 They were still connected to MJ, so Sega may have wanted to break all ties with them after the child sex scandal.

    • @Jami393
      @Jami393 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BlazeHeatnix But the only person who was effected by this scandal, was only Michael. So really Sega might've wanted to break all ties with only the people involved with this scandal, which we know throughout the credits listed and not listed, is Michael Jackson. Plus some of them worked on their own anyway, just more likely collaborated with Michael now and again, so they can stay listed. But anyway why are we involving the scandal with this, when it has nothing to do with MJ going uncredited.

      It's said that Sega scrapped Jackson's original music but kept the cues in various songs, & that he latter reworked a sonic song into Stranger in Moscow, & that Ice Cap Zone was an unreleased Jetzons song, but I suspect Launch Base Zone was based on the short-lived opening theme for the Ferris Beuller TV series.

    It makes sense! From what I've read/heard Michael has always been a perfectionist in terms of the production quality he puts forth in his projects. Audio Engineer/Producer of "Thriller", Bruce Swedien, says this about Michael's studio ethic.
    "but he really cared about the quality of what we were doing. Not only the technical quality, but the musicality, and his pitch, and the lyrics, the arrangements, and so on. For example, I don’t think I ever saw Michael with the lyrics in front of him."

  • @DoneRightProductions

    The Ice Cap Zone melody was actually a track that Brad Buxor slipped in from his former band, the Jetzons', song called, "Hard Times". Check out the song and compare. It recently surfaced on TH-cam as a track that never saw the light of day until just recently. Brad is the only link between the Jetzons and Sonic 3.

    This needs a revisit since the Sonic 3 Beta has been released and the music for Carnival Night, Ice Cap, and Launch Base are the same pieces from the S&K Collection. This is pretty much confirmation that Michaels music DID make it in the game.

    My guess is as good as anyone else's, but here it is anyway:
    The nice man that did the video interview seems to have been a higher up in the company, while the anonymous source seems to have been involved in the actual development. After Jackson left because he was unsatisfied with the sound, it probably would've taken time to filter through the bureaucracy large companies have.
    I can imagine Sega Japan saying Jackson had to be dropped, unaware that he had already left, and the Americans being like, "well, if you think that's best, we can make it happen" or something. From their own points of view, I don't think anyone GT talked to was lying, they just have their own perspective on the story because they were involved in different areas of the development.

    Something to also consider, if Sega wanted to distance themselves from MJ, explain why they decided to once again collaborate with him with Space Channel 5 Part 2?
    This lends more to the idea that he (Jackson) himself ended his work on Sonic on his own terms and years later came back for a new project. As opposed to Sega washing their hands with him...

    • @taniarodriguez61

      Yeah but that was years laters... Sega had a completely different team at the time. Roger Hector was gone, and the scandal was really old by then. (It was before the 2nd trial if I remember) Who's not to say that both Sega and MJ had their reason to drop the project. I don't see why Roger Hector would take some time out of retirement to blatantly lie about something. Then again, in some of his other interview, his memory appeared to be somewhat cloudy.

    • @ButtonMasherReal
      @ButtonMasherReal 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Putting all of this together, it does indeed seem like Jackson was simply dissatisfied with the sound quality of the Genesis and the Sonic Team used the scandals and allegations as an excuse. Of course, by the time Space Channel 5 Part 2 was released, the sound quality of videogames had greatly improved and the rumors were old news so Sega and MJ would've been willing to work together again.

    My question is why would MJ back out because of sound when the music quality of his own game sounds like sonic 3. His game was first so he already knew the sound capacity of Sega Genesis

    • @Jami393
      @Jami393 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      But he might've not worked directly with Mega Drive's sound chip. With Moonwalker the video game, it is obviously the music is based on Michael's compositions due to there being Smooth Criminal, Bad etc, but the synthesised versions were not done by him, they were done by Hiroshi Kubota, who was credited as Jamita.

    • @MultiDref
      @MultiDref 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jami393
      What's working directly with the sound chip got to do with it? He didn't work directly with the music for Sonic 3 either, as he is not a computer programmer. He involvement would have been the same as with Moonwalker, namely providing normal music which the programmers then turn to computerized versions. Also, Moonwalker's music isn't "based" on Micheal's compositions, they are complete copies of his compositions. I don't buy the "Jackson quit cause he hated the sound chip" simply because he already knew what it was capable of and because he had already allowed his music to be used by it!

    • @pointblank0020
      @pointblank0020 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      MultiDref You overestimate the amount of involvement celebrities have with video games. Maybe he never even heard the final versions of Moonwalker's music

    • @Jami393
      @Jami393 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MultiDref But maybe he didn't realise what the chip was actually capable of with either advantages or disadvantages the chip had. Also you wouldn't need to be a programmer to work with the chip, seeing that it produced synthersised music, which could already be done like with Yamaha keyboards at the time. Michael could probably hear in his mind what he wanted but the chip could not produce it the way he thought of it. So there for he could've had numerous attempts to try and make what he wanted, but then gave up, and allowed them to use what was finished. And this could've lead to him being uncredited.

      There is three samples in the track. You can hear one getting repeated in the first 26 seconds. Between 27 seconds and 41 seconds, you can hear two other samples. And you can hear them again, when those parts of IceCap's music gets repeated. Now I only put my finger down on one sample taken from Speed Demon, but the other two I don't know. I'm assuming they're all MJ's though.

    Michael Jackson and his crew composing Sonic 3 is bitter sweet. The soundtrack is certainly one of the best in the series, but the aftermath is full of complications and lawsuits, and it's for certain "on my behalf" that the soundtrack is the sole reasoning that Sonic 3 & Knuckles will sadly never be remade on mobile devices.

    • @Onisishkt
      @Onisishkt 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah me too I believe it was of the child abuse scandal that he left Sonic 3 soundtrack unfinished and he had to covert it up by saying that the quality of the sound chip on Genesis wasn't up to his standards. Also this might had affect the sales for Sega since many parents wouldn't want to buy to their kids a game that Michael Jackson had involved with it because he was indicted for conspiracy to commit child abduction.

      Onisishkt He wasn't indicted in 93 for abduction. That was 2003. Michael was notoriously obsessed with sound quality during the 90's. He invested millions into quality equipment, so it is very possible he scrapped it since he was known to move on without a second thought if his artistic vision was skewed. Another point: the History album, released in 95 for $45 went on to sell 20 million worldwide (one of the greatest selling releases of all time). Despite the scandal, MJ's work still sold ridiculous numbers.
      P.S MJ went un credit in the '91 episode of the Simpsons too. It was nothing out of the ordinary to his habits.

    • @Onisishkt
      @Onisishkt 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah maybe he wasn't satisfied with the music quality with the Genesis sound chip but he did have a game before his work on Sonic 3 the Moon-walker which it did have many of his soundtracks on it right? By the way the game sucked on Genesis the arcade version was a bit better.

      One thing you're overlooking...
      The music used in his own game was recreations of songs we'd already heard in their studio versions, so we knew what those songs were supposed to sound like. If people didn't like the sound of the music on his own game, he could be sure that the people knew it was the fault of the game, not his own. This wasn't the case with the music he created for Sonic 3.

    Commenting on an old video, but here goes:
    I believe that the "we dropped MJ over the scandal" was a lot better for Sega than saying "MJ dropped us because he thought our system sounded like crap". Think about it, why would you admit to having poor sound in your system, when you can just "blame" the whole thing on something else entirely? Sega was in a hugely heated rivalry with Nintendo, and the audio quality of the two consoles (Genesis/Mega Drive and Super Nintendo/Super Famicom) was wildly different. To admit that your console had a major weakness during the "bit wars" was pretty much suicide.
    I think both sides hold a bit of truth, and the scandal just happened to occur at the perfect moment for Sega to be able to wipe out the notion that Sonic 3's music was going to be written by MJ.

    Something they didn't address. Some of the music for S&K Collection on PC was changed. Interestingly enough it's Carnival Night, Launch Base, Ice Cap, Knuckles theme, mini boss theme, and S3 credits. So there HAS to be some reason for that.

    • @violetmars6846
      @violetmars6846 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was due to conversion and hardware. MIDI format doesn't translate sounds well, or voice transitions. All those tracks had some effects that didn't translate in the MIDI format. IE the glass shatters in Carnival Night, or the 'Go' shouts in Launch Base. MIDI format also doesn't play nice with synthesized instrumental accent sounds. Whether or not those songs changed had something to do with Jackson is irrelevant since Buxer composed tracks as well and his compositions were heavily synthesized or sampled. We know for a fact that Ice Cap was Hard Times and it was heavy on the synth instrumentations.

    12:13 "And most importantly, he stated that any similarity between Michael Jackson's work and the music in the final game was coincidental and not intentional."
    To correct this statement he actually said that it wasn't intentional on *SEGA's behalf.* However, the original music composers could have intentionally based it off of Jackson's work. As what he says does not contradict this statement.

    • @litbolt4205
      @litbolt4205 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Templarfreak That's true. He also said the game was being put together by Yuji Naka, who I assume would've been on the Japan side of development. It's possible all Naka had to work with was file names for the music, without necessarily knowing their composer, especially if the tracks had come from America (not all of them did).
      They said MJ didn't demand his music not be used, just that he go uncredited for what he had done. The samples that he contributed could, I guess, have been used in tracks that others created if they had access to them. The game's music seems to have a fairly cohesive sound to me, so it's certainly possible that the other composers tried to make their sound fit with what had been done already.
      Lots of conjecture about this topic... Still, this is an interesting story in gaming history.

      Is like the narrator said: They didn't want to put to shame the Genesis' sound chip. Having that kind of statement would be bad for the consoles sales given their aggressive marketing strategy. Saying their sound chip is not good enough would be a game changer in that, not only would the competion use that to gain more market share but sega's stock would go down.

      Um, ok, but what you describe was the possible situation over 20 years ago! Why would he lie about it NOW? The Genesis has been dead since the late 90's! Besides, reporting that someone doesn't like your sound chip is not at all the same as supposedly "admitting", "hey, our Genesis sound chip is bad!"

      A company man is someone who is loyal to the company he belongs to and tries the make it the best that it can be and gives it the benefit of the doubt as opposed to malcontents who are never satisfied and more interested in brainless negative disruption than actually positivity contributing. Being a company man is no more a 'no matter what dick rides" (boy, you are soooooo articulate) and "sells his soul to them until the day the die" situation than those who remain loyal to the sports team they belong, their school or university, or their family. Your misdefinition of such is typical of the mindless sheep-like knee-jerk ignorant anti-corporation idealogy of recent generations who are too selfish to understand or appreciate the virtues and rewards of loyalty.

  • @TheRealDustinNunn
    @TheRealDustinNunn 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Trivia: Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles were one and the same game, but they split into two due to time constraints. Ice Cap's background music is based on an unreleased '80's song called "Hard Times" by a band called The Jetzons (Not to be confused with The Jetsons from Hanna-Barbera). When the Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles cartridges are connected together, the full version of Sonic 3 titled "Sonic 3 & Knuckles" is playable. Standalone Sonic 3 is Sonic 3, Part 1 and Standalone Sonic & Knuckles is Sonic 3, Part 2. In Sonic 3 & Knuckles, there are 14 emeralds to collect instead of 7. In S3&K, you can play as Super Sonic, Super Knuckles, Hyper Sonic, Hyper Knuckles and Super Tails. In S3&K, Knuckles is playable in the Sonic 3 levels. In S3&K, Tails is playable in the Sonic & Knuckles levels. Super Sonic, Hyper Sonic, Super Knuckles, Super Tails, Normal Sonic, Normal Knuckles and Normal Tails are not fully animated. The 7 Chaos Emeralds turn Sonic and Knuckles into their super forms but Tails does not transform for unknown reasons. The 14 emeralds (7 Chaos and 7 Super) turn Sonic and Knuckles into their hyper forms and Tails finally turns super. And after you have all 14 emeralds collected, you will unlock the better endings for each character.

    A new story has come out with interviews with the originally credited Composers. They all confirm that MJ DID work extensively on the music for the game and that the music they created together is what largely made it into the game. The reasons why MJ's name wasn't credited as convoluted (allegations) but also not out of character for him. Similarly he chose not to be credited on the episode of 'The Simpsons' that he was involved with. Either way, history has been cleared up and MJ did work on the music for Sonic 3.

      +T.A. Grant I am still a little unclear though because as far as many fans are concerned like any rumour (even if mostly true due to evidence now) they think he personally did all the work and every piece of work went into the game not the worked on a team and they tweaked it, it gets quite annoying on many Sonic 3 videos people claim he personally did all the work (as in there was no team, he was there till the end etc) not that people like Brad were involved.

      That's moreso based on miscommunication and a bit of ignorance. Many people don't realize that different elements of a game are rarely ever made by just one person, including the soundtrack. Even regular music, like Michael Jackson's career, wasn't all based around him.
      The "rumor" is mostly spread as "Michael Jackson did the music for Sonic 3", which is sort of true, but for many it gives off the impression that he was the one who did it all. That's where the confusion comes from.

    One big question that needs answered, if Michael wasn't happy with the sound of the Yamaha chip, then why did he allow his own Moonwalker title to be published? He's happy if it's his own endorsement, but not happy if he's uncredited? That doesn't make sense.

    • @dmer-zy3rb
      @dmer-zy3rb 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      michael not only had his own game on genesis - he also played the genesis and arcade maschines (with very similar yamaha chips) himself. he was a fan of sega and sonic, thats why he wanted to compose some music for it. the thing with "he wasnt happy how it sounded" is bullshit.

    The one thing I always REALLY want to know is the one thing that's ALWAYS omitted from these kinds of videos... (Not Pop Fiction specifically, just the general genre of videos investigating claims like this) It seems to me that the creators of this video are certain about the conclusion because of who the anonymous source is... But without knowing who that was, all of us at home are left with a video that FEELS inconclusive, because the so-called "nail in the coffin" that convinced them is just another re-hash of the Buxer story for us (That he left due to the sound quality). Uhg. Just makes me mad that I don't get to know who the anonymous source was. xD

    It's obvious, that 'if' Jackson was involved in the project to create some original scores, and if his music was dropped and reused; that the current existing tracks would not be part of the game. The tracks in the game are clear re-interpretations of some existing Michael Jackson songs, which have nothing to do with any original game music or with him being a composer. The current tracks are the best solution for any relay composer after the main composer has been pulled out of the project, and something has to finish in a short while as a rush job. But then again, Jackson's work is pop-culture and it gives a nice cool edge if it is reinterpreted and slammed to any product. He doesn't have to be the original composer, another assembler may have made this out of the blue.
    Reinterpreting existing Jackson music is cheap, fast, legal, and easy. An excellent way to meet sharp deadlines. And it's the best way of saving the soul of the game. If Jackson was the main composer of the existing works, he would probably not recycle some of his own works, especially after Sega already had his personal game with the same tunes. That would be a very lousy job, and it would not be gold either. He was the composer of 'Do the Bart man' (Simpsons), because he loved the show. That had totally no earlier-work-Jackson-signature on it, so if he would have been the original composer, he would come up with something different.
    P.s. I would like to add that it wasn't such a good idea to involve top-composers into projects like these, dealing with sound and music produced by chips. It required engineers to push any chip beyond its capabilities, dedicated nerd-composers would by any means do a better job.

    The actual explanation is pretty obvious:
    Michael Jackson's music was going to be in the game, but then Ganondorf stole it. Link took 7 years to defeat Ganondorf and rescued the music, and so it was restored into the game like it was always meant to be. However, Link then played the Ocarina of Time, creating an alternate timeline in which Ganon was never defeated, and therefore, again, no Jackson music was present.
    It makes perfect sense when you think about it.
