I tend to inference the section plane, same as the rotate tool - ie, if I want it to be a flat, horizontal plane, I click the up arrow (blue), or right (red axis), or left (green axis).

At 1:00, you could also use the arrows on your keyboard to snap to any axis (up = blue)
