Just saw this with friends for the first time. We all loved it. Surprised by the two options, we plumped for the Brit version. I understand now it is very slightly less cynical, but I felt the lack of music during key scenes really heightened the feeling of being there. Google Withers & Frances Sullivan are amazing, as is Lom and the chap who plays his father. As for Widmark... woah. Such a heel in this, but yet likably sweet at times - or was the spiv merely playing me too? Most of all I enjoyed the little moments of humanity the 'sharks' had, especially the final scene between Herbert Lom and his father, very moving and had me feeling quite sad for him for a moment. Truly, no man considers himself a villain. Cheers for the review!
Thanks for your comments. Widmark was great at playing the heel, the man you love to despise, in films like Kiss of Death, Street with No Name, Yellow Sky, No Way Out and Pickup on South Street.
The father was wrestling legend Stanislaus Zbyszko. One of the biggest names in wrestling at the turn of the last century. He was very much like his character in that he didn't like what wrestling was becoming, and in the mid 1920s was the last man to win the world's championship for real, though his opponent, Wayne Munn didn't know he'd have to defend it for real until he got in the ring that night.
I just watched this and it blew me away! Absolutely loved it.
