Publisher Text:
“Bond, James Bond.” Since Sean Connery uttered those immortal words in Dr. No, the world’s most famous secret agent in the history of cinema has been charming and thrilling audiences worldwide. This fearless, peerless and impeccably British character, created in 1953 by Ian Fleming, has starred in twenty-five EON-produced films, played by six different actors over seven decades. And still the franchise continues.
To tell the full story of how it all began, EON Productions opened its archives of photos, designs, and production materials to TASCHEN. The result is this remarkable account of the making of Dr. No, Bond’s first film outing: a beautiful volume that includes a treasure trove of words and pictures, many of which have never been seen before.
Access to EON’s James Bond archives was completely unrestricted, so this book is the most comprehensive account of one of the most iconic films the world has ever seen. Step inside the pages to find the true inside story and outstanding insights into the personalities and processes behind the most successful and longest-running film franchise in cinema history.
You can closely follow the making of the film through a day-by-day account of what took place, which scenes were shot and who made the decisions that shaped the story and characters as it was filmed. Among the 1007 images, you’ll see many rare and previously unpublished stills and on-set shots from photographers such as Bert Cann, Bunny Yaeger and Bradley Smith, as well as memos, documents, posters, and production designs.
And the behind-the-scenes stories paint their own pictures too, told by the people who were there. From producers Albert R. "Cubby" Broccoli and Harry Saltzman to director Terence Young and production designer Ken Adam, as well as the cast, the crew, writers and stuntmen, these personal narratives invite readers back in time and on to the film set itself.
For any fan, it’s a fantastic insight into how the Bond cinematic world was born - and its comprehensive coverage of the filming experience which will grip you from the first page.

The first Bond movie I saw in the theaters was From Russia With Love. my dad took me to see subsequent Bond movies until I was old enough to go on my own. I was 4 or 5 when I saw FRWL. I saw Dr. No later. Connery is the best and my favorite Bond. What I love about his movies is the intrigue, suspense and believability that later entries in the series kind of pushed to the limit (the believability aspect). This was really interesting. I had no idea that Connery did a voice over narration sharing thoughts and so on. Fascinating. Is this available?

Yes! I see George as having 3 big creative eras of Star Wars: OG Trilogy, Prequels and The Clone Wars Animated Series. You've covered the first two. A deep dive talk about his ideas and CW development would complete the collection! There is so much to talk about in CW. We have Art of books but a direct discussion with George on it all would be great to have in a book.

Thanks for that, never seen a video analysis of Dr No before, its one of my fave Bond films, not least cos its the original. I dont think it gets enough love, everyone just goes straight to Goldfinger which I found too over the top personally and nonsensical in parts. Dr No is as much a 60s spy thriller as it is a Bond film.

My dad took me to see several of the Sean Connery Bond films. I was 7 years old when this one came out. It goes without saying that he was the greatest Bond of all. I later had a neighbor who was a retired Royal Navy Lieutenant Commander in naval intelligence who actually knew Ian Fleming, who of course was also in naval intelligence. It’s a small world.

I don't know if Polanski's version is the best (I think Francesca Annis is badly miscast as Lady Macbeth), but it is certainly the easiest to understand and probably speaks most powerfully to a contemporary audience. The scuttled ending owes more to Jan Kott, who reinterpreted Shakespeare's plays through the modernist prism of Samuel Beckett. Peter Brook's "King Lear" is a Jan Kott interpretation of the play, which reimagines "Lear" as a variation on Beckett's "Endgame". Polanski's Macbeth and Banquo encountering the witches on the heath might be Beckett's Vladimir and Estragon wandering a country road. In my opinion, "Throne of Blood" has the most impressive Lady Macbeth and Birnham Wood scene. On the other hand, Polanski's set piece of the prophecy glimpsed in the witches' cauldron is the best scene of any "Macbeth" movie.
