Hey guys, I'm the lead animator for this series. Just to give you a quick side note, this episode is an absolute mess to cover - focussing on the civil wars and the conflicts on both eastern and western front. To ease this, I decided to add "chapter titles" at the top right corner of the screen. I'm aware the previous episodes should have that sooner but I will add it on the FULL DOCUMENTARY version after this series is done.
Anyways here are the time stamps:
    00:00-01:14 - Intro
    01:14--02:45 - Chapter 1 - Caliphate under Umar II.
    02:45-04:50 - Chapter 2 - The two front conflict.
    04:50-15:29 - Chapter 3 - The revolt of Yazid ibn al-Muhallab.
    07:45-08:54 - Battle of Basra.
    12:17-14:32 - Battle of Al-Aqr.
15:29-18:25 - Chapter 4 - The expansion on the Western front.
    18:25-20:39 - Battle of Toulouse.
    20:39-21:43 - Chapter 5 - The Aftermath.
Also the mods that I'm using are all from Anno Domini 768 and Ancient Empires' DUST mod by UMCenturion for Total War: Attila.
    Best wishes,
    Malay Archer ڤمانه ملايو

Excellent work, a very busy and complicated period of world history. Condensing a contentious historical period, that hundreds of books have been written about, based on conflicting and sometimes questionable sources into a 22 minute video must have been a difficult undertaking. It's interesting seeing how nuanced the political situation really was around the Arab and Christian world at this time. So many people want to paint conflicts purely along religious lines, but there is so much more to them when you look deeper - the situation in southern France is a great example.
A lot of people see Charles Martel as a "savior of Chrisendom" for his role in the Battle of Tours....yet here he is, eagerly watching two rivals (one Christian, one Muslim) weaken each other without his interference.
It's why videos like these are so important. It can help people understand that events aren't always to be taken at face value, and often require a more critical eye of the situation - both historically and now.

You cannot call the Umayyad province of al andalus or ifriquia as independent states yet, as they paid taxes, minted coins by the name of the caliph, and governors and generals were appointed/dismissed by the caliph. Its not until the abbassid caliphate that provinces become independent. Hi K&G - Huge fan here. With the title of the video being about the 721 Battle of Toulouse, it would have been more appropriate to spend more time talking about the Battle of Toulouse itself. The majority of the video covered the in-fighting in Arabia and only a small portion of the video covered The Battle of Toulouse, which made the title of the video a bit misleading. Love your videos, this is just a small piece of feedback. Thanks!

I would say that I am also looking forward to a series on the reconquista and I hope that in the series on it there will be an episode on the Battle of teba and the battle interests me because fighting and Dying in this battle was Sir James Douglas lord of Douglas who was a knight of Scotland who served in the service of Robert the Bruce however his journey to the battle and his journey back home is interesting to me and his journey to the battlefield of teba began in 1329.
In the year 1329 king Robert the Bruce was dying and as he lay dying he made one last request to his friend James Douglas and the request was that Douglas take Roberts heart and take it to holy land where the heart was to be presented at the church of the holy sepulcher and then in the following year Douglas began his journey by first getting safe conduct from King Edward the 3rd of England and a letter of recommendation to the king of Castile and then Douglas made his way from Berwick to Flanders and from Flanders to Seville.
At Seville king Alfonzo the avenger of Castile offered Douglas riches, fine horses and armor but Douglas declined these gifts declaring that he and his men were prepared to offer their arms in the service of the king as humble pilgrims seeking absolution of their sins and while waiting to depart from Seville many of the foreign knights who had come to seek service with the king paid their respects to Douglas including a number of Englishmen who were keen to meet the man who until recently was their nemesis.
And during the battle Douglas was killed in action and in the aftermath of the battle Douglas’s body and the casket that contained the embalmed heart of Robert the Bruce were taken back to Scotland by Douglas’s surviving companions and then buried in Scotland however the battle of teba was not decisive but in response to king Alfonso’s victory’s sultan Abu Hasan the marinid sultan of Morocco at that time sent forces in support of the caliphate of Granada and the Battle of teba would set the stage for the Castilian Portuguese victory at Rio Salado and also end the last intervention by North African powers in the defense of Muslim Granada.

Well, and only 100 years after the reconquista ended, both iberians kingdons become the two of the biggest and greatest empires the world as ever seen.
So its always a matter of perspective.
Iberia after the fall of rome, was like an outlaw region, without any rule and institution or ties betweem its people.
Reconquista also needed to establish national identity, culture, religion, institutions, ties, social hierarchies, etc. Thats why it took so long.
But once establish and without any threats they move for a world domination and kinda did it.

And question why the Muslims had so many great fighters. The battles in Arabia gave the Muslims experience on the battlefield that they would use to great effect against the Persians and Romans. Covering that period would answer their questions and add a lot to the series. Thanks.

For them Arabs were a distant foe, about which they knew next to nothing, and neither did Arabs and Berbers knew much about the Franks. I highly recommend the book Cross and Crescent a novel set at the time of Arab forays in France and focuses on earliest interactions between Arabs Berbers and Franks, in the form of two men one Muslim Arab, and another Christian Frank. The author is Michael Uhry Newman. The novel in my view captures well how each society perceived one another at first meeting.

of coarse.! I agree whole heartedly .. my point was the dispicable and manipulative way the conquest, occupation then ultimate retaking of Spain is portrayed by today's academia. This tax was on non moslims only ,was suffocating and oppressive to say it lightly! This was in addition to daily atrocities doled out by the ruling class. Who for some reason replaced all Gothic nobles with Jewish ones including confiscation of all lands and tittles.Point being Andalousia was not some paradise created by the Arabs. It was quite the opposite and was referred to as the "ruin of Spain" by historians and writers of that day, up until after WW2. When the academic and cultural landscape shifted violently to the left. And proceeded to rewrite , bury and or fabricated history out of whole cloth. This is the undeniable truth of the matter pertaining to the vast majority of the history of the Getic peoples. All it takes is some light research, all the information is there.. this Jezya (spelling ? lol)Tax was only a small example relevant to this particular video. Simply put mate....its a grossly false conception and portrayal of the Islamic conquests. The vast majority of their armies weren't even Arab...they were Berbers from Mauretania (the true "Moores"). The arcatecture was awsome in the later period but its NEVER mentioned that the Goths had already built all the first arches and church foundations( turned INTO mosques). The ccities infrastructure was already there! The Arab host outright copied the Gothic arch ,it did not come from the middle east . This is easy to spot btw the arch styles are slightly different. I know this was done every where by all peoples through out history. Yet todays historians are insistent on glorifying Mohamedon Spain and all its splendor, unjustifiably crediting all its accomplishment to the conquerers. It is simply not the case. They will insist the Arabs brought the first mill to Span and Europe ...this is so assinine , laughable and provably false ! watch the video again with the notion in your mind and recognize all the excuse for muslim failure and complimentary nature of the dialog and the almost derisive tone when talking of the Goths or christian armies...@@youwhat491
