Yes, by freezing them, you can go on vacation without worrying about the kefir over-fermenting, or even grow extra to give to loved ones. Hope you're enjoying homemade kefir!
Hi Maria, sorry for the late reply. You can add milk to the grains and leave a bit of space at the top of the jar and put it in the freezer. It can stay for a long time.. I've even had some for more than a year and it was still good!
Thank you for your instructions 🙏 I’m on day three of my first kefir. In a couple of days when I take it off the cupboard should I find more grains? I started with very few ones which I kept frozen for 5 months 😲 as I was too scared of starting it 😅 so 🤞
@@cindysmtaggart yes I have and it already started to taste Kefirish 😃 I think.. Thank you so much for your swift reply and for a concise and to the point video. Keep them coming 🙏💜
Hi darling, my kefir is never thick and today’s more liquid than ever and it smells quite sour 😮 I wonder if I need to use more milk, but then I’d end up with too much kefir and I’m the only one drinking it 😢
@@bechamphealth I started with very few grains and filled a 340 grams jar. Followed your instructions and it looks like there are little more grains than I started with but it’s always been a bit thin
You're right Judy. Thanks for noticing! I didn't think people would be interested after I posted this.. LOL but since you noticed, I WILL do it. Thank you! :) And I'm sorry I didn't do it.. but I will.. and I'll reply back when I do..
That's interesting.. my kefir usually gets ready and thicker faster when it gets warmer .. how long do you ferment it for? Sometimes when it's hot, it will be ready in less than 24 hours and get pretty thick with the curd and whey separated.
I could have but since the kefir grains were frozen, the thawing milk would be very watery (bland) and might have freezer burn taste.. it didn't look very appealing to me :) but I'm sure it's ok to drink.
Can you make Kefir with store bought plain organic Keifer or do I need to purchase grains? I buy a good brand of Keifer weekly, but it is quiet expensive. Thank yoh.
Hi Carolyn, you will need to get kefir grains and then add milk to ferment it. You won't be able to make kefir with store bought plain kefir because the grains are not included to ferment it. Hope this helps. Some health food stores sell kefir grains and start up kits. :)
Hi, I just watched your video. I've been trying to make kefir with store bought whole milk, and it only gets thick on the top, and the bottom milk is like water. Any suggestions, please help
haha.. yes you are right.. but thankfully it was still half frozen so it didn't do much damage. I changed to a plastic spoon after and the kefir was quite thick and alive in the end. Thanks for your feedback! :)
Great tutorial. I'm new to Kefir making and so pleased to learn you can freeze the grains ... Many thanks and all the best!

Store bought kefir has about 10 strains due to the timing of commercial fermentation. Home made kefir has 40-60 strains so it’s a lot more potent!
Just starting the kefir program and waiting for my first grains. Thanks for this vid. As being single, I know I will need the freeze trick!
For water kefir, to store them dehydrate them then freeze them. You can use stainless steel just no aluminum. I can’t use milk.
Please, I would like to know how to freeze them in the first place. I know now how to defrost the grains!!! Thank you in advance!

After defrosting, it might take a few cycles to get more grains but you will eventually. Did you already strain it and add fresh milk at least twice?

How much milk to grain ratio did you use? And how long did you leave it in room temperature? Did you stir it well after you strained it?

My kefir grains suddenly started shrinking as the weather became hotter and the kefir is thin, don't know what to do.

Why can't you drink the thawing milk? It must have some good bacteria in it.

Actually you can make Kefir from store bought Kefir. I have done it and here is a video that shows you how. th-cam.com/video/IARUf4er-Vs/w-d-xo.html

Hi 👋 I usually use 2% milk and it takes about 24 hours or less.. how long do you ferment for and maybe whole milk has too much fat.
Thank you, I switched 2% and it came out great!
Nice slurping, NOT!
That metal spoon just killed some of the bacteria. tsk, tsk.
